#1609 – Belly

People get swallowed by whales a lot in cartoons. The whales are usually depicted as a thin shelled hollow creature. Apparently whales are 90% air. No internal organs or digestive tract at all. If you are ever swallowed by one simply tickle the exposed ribcage and it will shoot you out the blowhole along with a fountain of water that did not come from the large empty space you were just standing up in.

Whales were my fourth or fifth Fleeting Passionate Hobby when I was a kid, and even now I still die a little inside every time a piece of media depicts them as squirting water out of their nostrils.

    Et tu, Finding Nemo? 🙁

  2. Wait a second… Did Biff get swallowed whole by a bear? I didn’t know that a bear’s inside is slate grey!

The weirdest thing about cartoon whales that swallow people is when it isn’t even dark inside the whale. It’s almost as if the people who are making animated movies/shows have confused whales for submarines or something…

So many incorrect things are shown in cartoons (and even live action movies). The only reasons I can think of that it’s done is it’s just easier or more convenient to the story. Or the writers are idiots.

BTW, Chris, it took me a little bit to figure out the joke today, which makes it better in my opinion : )

It’s a Scientific Fact that Cartoon Animals are hollow inside, unless it’s funnier for them to explode. Real-Life Fauna decidedly less so.

I’m remembering a scene in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Wasn’t the whole crew swallowed by a whale or some other gigantic sea creature/monster at some point? I remember it being well-lit (much beyond the capacity of the laterns or candles they were using) and that not being an issue for me since I was around 8. What a fantastic movie. Thanks Chris. I have a nostalgia ride to take. 🙂
