Chapter: Comics
It wasn’t too long ago that almost all gift cards self destructed. After 6 or 12 months they started subtracting a “maintenance” fee until the balance was reduced to zero. Thankfully this has largely gone out of style. Now the main issue is when you get a gift card to a store that you don’t normally shop at. It becomes a sort of solitaire game show where you need to select the exact items to use up the maximum amount on the gift card possible without going over.

I happened to check out this comic at 10pm PST, and actually thought that the timer on the card was counting down to New Years. But then I actually watched it. Imagine my disappointment.
Here I was watching it count down for a good minute till I realized it was just on a ten second loop
happy new year’s all and is it just me or is that comic animated?
Corjoth, it’s just you. 😀
I find myself wondering how this will work for a book. I also find myself wondering why I just used the phrase “I find myself wondering”.
The Duck Has Spoken.
I am VERY impressed that you made the comic “move.” I give you props and have a happy new year.
My favorite things about gift cards is when you think you’ve used all of it up, but give it to the cashier anyways to see that you still have some money on it. Helped me get a few toys when I was a kid.
@Flashback81
Same here, but the countdown still makes a super neato new year comic.
Wooow, special effects today!
I let it run down to zero to see if it was on a loop or not.
@Micah – Same. Took me a minute to figure out it was looped. Was this timed with New Year’s on purpose? xD
I actually found a gift card from my birthday two years ago in my wallet last month, and used it to buy a christmas gift. I was thrilled!
I really dislike gift cards. It’s like I’m too lazy to pick out a gift for you, so go pick it out yourself … oh yes, and you have to get it at a store that you never go in.
WHOA! A moving comic!! Can I get this one framed and signed? 😀
HOLY CRAP IT’S ALIVE!
@DTanza: Behold, the Frankenstein of comics! Witness its glory!
Nice job on the timer. Very clever!
Gift cards are, in every conceivable way, a worse gift than simply giving someone money. I find no value in “suprise! You have more on the gift card than you thought” if the value in cash is the same.
Get your friends and family the consumer anti-gift card. Just add money. Usable wherever cash is accepted, and it never expires.
Worse thing than getting a gift card, is getting useless stuff that you don’t really need.
Someone once gave me a gift card to Culver’s, never ate there.
Another gave me clothes twice.
I usually prefer cash unless gift card is from store that I actually go to. I had received one from a store that was no longer in town.
Surprisingly, you could use the same gift card on their website. This works for any store, useful if the store doesn’t have it locally. Back then, this wasn’t possible, now it is.
big props of an animation with that much quality.
I WANNA VALVE GIFTCARD!
I really enjoy how your assuming that by the time The book of Biff 8 or 9 comes into existence there will be paper that you can animate!
Something not to distant from this
Also this comic updates at midnight server time… well it did last time I checked.
Did you know that its illegal for gift cards to expire?
Has there been an animated Biff before? If not, why? And if so where!
Ahh just saying twenty-ten sounds so future! Happy New Year! Biff beware if you “accept the mission” won’t the card self-destruct?
Tee Hee, Biff has a gif
i am having a hang over right now, so is the timer actually going down?
Animated comics from now on? What a resolution!
@ Chris: So if you ever print, frame and sign this.. it could be a bit more expensive, but you could embed an ACTUAL digital timer/clock into the frame…
Just a simple animated GIF, but that’s what I call a smart use of electronic publishing! You can’t do that in a real book…
@ sco3tt
He publishes books (hence the tittle “The Book of Biff. Animating comics makes it hard to publish them in a book. That also explains the standard size of every comic.
My… My gracious! A moving comic! Wow… If you were to print this one, I would use a shiny hologram that moves. Either way, major props for this one!
Now a giftcard that makes you expire when it does! 😀
The problem with giftcards now is the store might go bankrupt before you use it.
Is this the first .gif comic you’ve done Chris? I don’t recall ever seeing one.
Zut alors! Ze comic, she moves!
The problem I have had with gift cards was, I’d get ones for stores that don’t even exist here. Now if someone in my family decides “gift card” they give cash instead.
Maybe it’s a .gif-card?
COOOL!
Xantoz: GROAN…..
Yeah, I hate that whole ‘you paid for this but you’re not actually getting anything’ thing. Am I the only one who considers that STEALING?
It would have been funny to have it self-destruct at the end…
