#1699 – Dripper

Merry Christmas! New comics resume Wednesday.

I have an alarm clock that only goes off for 60 seconds before giving up for 24 hours. I can easily integrate an annoying sound into my dream for a short time. I had to switch to using my phone placed across the room. Getting physically out of bed to turn it off was my best solution.

Alarm clocks can never find a good middle ground for this, it seems. I used to have an alarm clock that if not attended would go off for about 4 hours before finally giving up. And it was so loud that on those occasions where I forgot to turn it off when not at home we would get complaints from the neighbours across the street.

Really, 15 minutes at most should do it. If you haven’t turned it off by then you’re either not there or dead.

I see you haven’t met me.
      Hello.
I have slept through alarms for hours. 15 minutes? Pfft. It takes me 20 at least to realize I’m even hearing anything!

  2. I don’t use a “real” alarm clock, but there was this time a couple of years ago when my dog barked constantly for over half an hour. I woke up briefly when he began barking, but then I fell asleep again, and kept hearing his loud barking as background noise in my dream. I still remember the dream, actually! I was playing a severely glitched NES game where I was supposed to explore a castle (it didn’t look like any real NES game I know).

When I was in school, my room was always a wreck. I would put my alarm clock on the other side of the room. It didn’t help… I still would climb out of the bunk bed, climb across the piles of crap, turn off the alarm, nd climb back into bed… and not wake up!

I go with a two-clock system. My bedroom stereo has a alarm function, so it’s a clock radio after a growth spurt, and it’s set pretty loud. After that, I have a cheap Westclox alarm clock set to go off about 26 minutes later. If I have to get up earlier than 8:00 am, I have my cell phone, DS, DSi, and a couple other devices with alarms to help, and each can have a different chime, which helps a heck of a whole lot.

Alarms just annoy the daylights out of me, but usually won’t wake me up unless they are unbearably loud, in which case I wake up in a panic, turn it off, then fall back asleep. Using a radio alarm actually wakes me up though. Do does my wife pouring water in my ear.

I drink 4 cups of water before I go to bed. I have no choice but to get up.

I finally figured out, if there’s something I REALLY want to get up for, I can pop up like toast about 2-5 minutes before the alarm goes off. If I don’t, it won’t help to have five alarms.
Q: “Do you get to work on time?” A: “I’ve been working on time all my life!”

After hearing it for about 16 monts, I tend to get used to the sound of the alarm and not notice it anymore, even when it’s very loud. The solution was using the alarm on my cellphone, where I can change the wake-up tone every time it stops waking me up. The last one was a depeche mode intro (blasphemous rumours, wonderful to wake up to), currently I’m using the theme music from ‘Angel’.
