#1635 – Glare

I’ve never owned a smartphone so it always takes me a second to figure out what’s going on when I see someone outside trying to operate and shade the phone at the same time. It seems like they are taking a pop quiz and don’t want other pedestrians to see their answers.

  1. I’ve never owned a smartphone either, but my dad has two (slightly different) of them. I don’t even know why… I’ve never seen him trying to shade the phone like that, though, but he still manages to make it look like nobody’s allowed to see what he’s doing with his phone. I have no idea what he’s doing with his phone, but he makes it look like it’s really really important and also really secret.

What, is my dad a secret agent or something?!

You think you know someone, until the sunny day when you catch them reading bad Spice And Wolf fan-fiction. D:

If the phone’s so smart, it ought to be able to solve this problem.

Back during the Gameboy days, I had the same problem with glare. However, since the screen wasn’t very backlit, you needed some light to see anything.

Tell me about it. The GBC and Advance screens were better, designed to work best in bright light. I have the later SP model as well, with the backlit screen that has the two brightness settings: Really Bright, and Blind Entire Families.

Somehow reminds me of the first zippy red LED watches; working at Hughes in the Hybrid shop, the CMOS guys next door were making guts for the Bulova and other high-end brands. We got the chance to get ones in a plain stainless case for Christmas, but going out to lunch and checking if we’d be back on time took 3 hands; one to hold the wheel, another to push the D4 button AND one to shade the display…
