#852 – Shield

The first time I got dental x-rays as a kid really freaked me out. The lead smock they draped over me was really heavy and made it hard to breathe. Then everyone else left the room while this mechanical arm with a loud buzzing tube aimed at me slowly moved around my head. I like the new version much better where the buzz-o-matic only shoots you for a second instead of drenching you for the better part of a half hour.

Also, Biff art for your wall!

I don’t think I ever had one of those, I had the lead vest, but nothing that revolved around my head, they just stuck that little bit of film or w/e it was into my mouth, I bit down to hold it in place and they took snapshots.

Most recently they had something similar to the bit in my mouth, but it was covered in hard plastic and attatched to a metal pole, it was EXTREMELY painful to hold it in my mouth, I came out of that appointment with sores on my gums from that thing, not getting x-rays there ever again.

It’s just ever so comforting when they give you a lead vest to protect you from the machine that’s pointed at your head

I had to bite down on this thing and hold my head in this padding on it, and it clicked a few times. I was done after that. XD but yeah, not too fond of the dentist, either…

I like the lead smock, always have. When I was little, I thought it was really funny that I suddenly gained twenty pounds.
I think I’ve always had to bite down on this hard plastic, and they put me in a chair while the thing went really close around my head. When I was little, I also found the fun, cause I thought they were xraying my brain instead of my teeth. Because, you know, no teeth in the back of your head.

Yeah, I remember the old x-ray machines. The one the dentist used when I was a kid may have been signed by Madame Curie. I really dread going to the dentist. Teeth very sensitive, and I’m nearly impossible to numb being naturally resistant to pain killers and anesthesia. And guess where I’m going this Friday! Lucky me!

I miss the irradiated feeling the old machines gave. The new ones are all so safe, about the same as two hours in the sun, that they don’t help you build up an x-ray resistance. I wouldn’t want to see any young people go out in space without surviving being heavily dosed like us slightly not to young people were.

The lead smock is designed to protect your reproductive parts. I hate the bitewings as well, I swear they are designed for giants’ mouths. :p

I’ve had extensive work on my mouth, and many X-rays. The machine the orthodontists and surgeons always used with this thing where you clamped down on a plastic mouth bit, and then they aligned your head using laser guides. After that, they’d turn the machine on, and these padded metal vices would hold my head still, while a big camera house revolved around my head, buzzing ominously.

I kept expecting Jigsaw to start talking to me, explaining the torture device I was it.

So in BiffWorld, images of X-Ray vision actually emit X-Rays? Cool!

I used to be a Navy Nuc – Reactor operator on subs. Dental X-Rays don’t bug me at all – I might well be able to expose the film all by myself! :p

    (not really)

Radiation is not something you build up a resistance to. Your body can become resistant to something living, such as the chicken pox, but radiation is not living.

  11. Croc says:

@Silver – Your body can build up a tolerance for certain things, though. Like capsaicin (the chemical that makes peppers hot).

I hate having to deal with lead smocks. Also I hate the dentist. Mainly because he asks for perfection.

  13. Kasain says:

i really hate going to the dentist, my teeth are reeeeally sensitive and they always seem to insist on digging at them and practically whacking them around T-T i need a nicer dentist… and yeah, the whole x-ray experience always freaked me out when i was a kid, especially since there was a huge warning on the door to stay away from that room… yeaaah >.>

  14. MaskedMan says:

    @Silversaraph;
No, you don’t develop immunity to radiation… But you do grow immune to the hype and unreasoning fear.
A nice week at the beach could easily push you past your allowable *industrial* dosage for the *year.* If you live in Denver or other high-altitude place, just walking to and from your car can give you a healthy jolt. Work in a granite building? Hope you like the taste of zoomies!

Nope. Dental X-Rays’ don’t bug me at all.

  15. Lunakrypt says:

Yeah don’t you love when the dentist takes that sharp hook and jam it into one of your teeth, and then say “Does that hurt?”

  16. Tech says:

I find it suspect that they lead-plate you from neck to groin, but not your head. MY BRAIN IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN MY BITZ! THANK YOU!
