#246 – Guitar

I always found rubber bands to be very musical. I liked to sting a bunch of them together, hook one end over a chair arm and then pluck it like a stand up bass guitar. When I was a kid a friend of mine had a paper route. When he quit he still had a box of tiny green rubber bands left over. We spent a couple hours linking them all together and went out into the parking lot of his apartment building. We walked in opposite directions to see how far it would stretch. The chain finally broke and shot across the parking lot knocking him over. I ran over to see if he was ok, and found him laughing beneath a tangled pile of green.

My question is does he have a half a mustache or no mustache and just a straw sticking out of his mouth like a country farmer?

  5. Vole says:

Best author’s note ever. Well today at least.

I prefer taking a long, black piece of pvc pipe and blowing through it like an alphorn. 😉

  6. wortcov says:

o no! he have lost half his lip 🙁

  7. Bob says:

Ah the dangers of rubberbands, my parents told me they could snap me in the eye and make me blind, which now that i think about it, could be the reason to my unreasonable fear of exploding air compressor tanks, or just any tank at all, presssureized or not…

  8. RFPT says:

what’s with the fingers? they look a little misshaped.

  9. It’s hard to draw a person playing guitar, I’ve tried

  10. Daniel says:

    you are a genius!

if you sold biff shirts, i would certainly buy one.

  11. dragonbrad says:

wortcov, bif is trying to pull of an expression,i thinks its hard to show emotions with to long eye brows and a loarge mouth

  12. dragonbrad says:

    i want his guitar

  13. Reikon Ame says:

No one has gotten off the subject about rubber bands, what about the fact of how Biff looks as he is sitting there, as if in a deep thought. Wondering about the mysteries of life while he sits there on his guitar.

  14. Nate says:

looks like he’s singing the blues.

  15. Wannabeelf says:

the rubber bands ate the right half of Biff’s mustache!!! run away, run away!!!!!

  16. Chris says:

    Seriously… that’s his mouth. He doesn’t have a mustache.

  17. Rono says:

    that must’ve been awesome…
how far did it stretch you think?

  18. Semakora says:

    Hmm… Singin’ the blues… Must be a long song… o_o

  19. Reikon Ame says:

Yet after all this they haven’t realized what his mouth is, I mean come on if his eyebrows are that long and then not his mouth. Besides there are still no good comments on his gaze people. That is what was trying to be hit upon here, showing off Biff’s deep and intelligent side.

  20. Seraphine says:

Biff plays to a tough crowd! I hope people don’t judge *my* looks so harshly. I’ll snap ’em with my rubber band!

  21. amanda says:

i think the gaze is explained by him intently listening to the sounds of the rubber bands while he tries to tune them.

  22. DomanickX says:

Chris Are you trying to make biff look like he is staring into space?
    or is he groaning?

  23. Corey says:

I’m not so amazed with the rubber bands as much as the awesome purple guitar.

  24. Mike says:

Are you kidding? Rubber bands make awesome instruments! In fact, I got good at playing them.

Click the link on my name, it’s a recording I made with a rubber band a while ago. I still haven’t thought of anything useful to do with it.

  25. Sax says:

Chris, I want to thank you. For a project in one of my classes, I had to print out a picture and iron it onto a shirt. I used your first comic, haircut. Your comics are absolutely genius.

  26. CynicalSavant says:

You had quite a whimsically eventful childhood, didn’t you?

  27. Natester says:

That’s pretty good. Why doesn’t he just wrap the bands in some of that thin copper wire? I heard that is a great guitar string alternative. (Even though it takes a while.)

  28. Ela says:

Hehehehehe. It’s funny, we just started guitars in music class today.

  29. Garrett says:

    To new readers:
If you haven’t visited the About page, check it out. It’s a good little introduction to the comic, AND it tells you that that’s his mouth.

  30. 12345 says:

his left hand has two little fingers and two large ones……what?

  31. Otacon says:

Heh, the magic of rubber bands.
I used to have a paper route too, but I never got a bunch of leftover rubber bands they took them back which was weird to me.

  32. KungKong says:

Is Biff going to start his own band anytime soon?

I Have a bad memory of an incident with a rubber band.

not so long story made shorter it hurt. 🙁

  33. Haragorn says:

Now, a Bass, on the other hand works great with rubber bands.

  34. dragonbrad says:

holy crap mike that was a sweet song, did you us the sound shop thing or not

  35. Squall says:

I just started reading your webcomic yesterday and have now read them all. In one sentence, this is the best thing since Invader Zim! Nearly every single frame had me rocking back and forth in my chair, unable to stop laughing, and only laugh harder when I read the next. You definitely have a new regular

  36. Chris says:

Thanks Squall, I’m glad you enjoyed them.

  37. William McMillian says:

    MIKE! That was freaking SICK!

I demand you make more rubber music!!

So do I – though I may have seen it somewhere different to where you’ve seen it – it’s a Mozilla Firefox theme – one of the three or four that I use, too.

Metal washtub + 3 foot long by 1.5″ diameter stick + bass guitar string + two eyebolts, two flat washers and four nuts = gutbucket.

Drill a hole in the middle of the bottom of the washtub and mount one eyebolt through it with a nut and flat washer on either side- with the eye on the bottom side.

Drill a hole crosswise through one end of the stick and mount the other eyebolt through it like you did in the washtub.

Cut a notch in the other end of the stick so it can pivot on the bottom edge seam of the washtub- with the eyebolt pointed toward the center of the tub.

Connect the guitar string between the eyebolts and you’re ready to play!

Place the notched end of the stick on the edge of the tub and one foot on the tub’s edge opposite the stick.

Tone is controlled by varying tension on the string while volume is controlled by varying pressure on teh tub with your foot- allowing the tub to lift off the floor. A percussion element can be added by letting the tub clomp down against the floor.

  41. Rachel says:

They sound better than gutars when you can’t play the gutar without dogs howling louder than anything else on the whole block.

  42. Zaphoid says:

I had a paperboy job as a kid. I used to always order extra rubber bands and tie them together. Went out with a friend in the middle of the night one night and stretched it all out on a (mostly) empty road. We got to a little over a quarter of a mile of rubber bands, and then someone decided 2 am was a good time to back out of their driveway. It came shooting back at me, and on the way back got wrapped around a stick. The stick shot past me and into the passenger window of a car about 20 feet behind me. We panicked, grabbed as many rubber bands as I could, hopped on my bike and we took off. I’m sure the next morning the owner of the car was trying to figure out why there was a big stick in their passenger seat with a few feet of rubber bands dangling off of it.

  43. Darkpheonix XIII says:

Rubber bands are fun. They hurt people.

  44. Colin says:

    no they would not.

  45. Grand Duke Thomson the Nothingth says:

I have actually always wanted to string my acoustic guitar with rubber bands.

It’d be hard to tune though.

  46. the walrus says:

Biff has realized that one of his rubber bands is about to snap, and the horror of this situation is causing him to put on a pained expression like the one displayed.

  47. BrainpanSonata says:

Again you make me regret that I don’t know the lyrics to “Rubberband Man”…
