I remember being mystified at how rocks would get in my shoe when I was a kid. “When was I even around rocks of this color? And where does all this sand keep coming from?”

At some point when I was maybe 15 years old, I got a rock in my shoe… The rock was inside the sole of the shoe, not in the shoe itself! This was because the shoes were so worn out, that their soles had gotten small holes in them, and a rock had somehow gotten into one of these holes, making a rattling noise with every single step I took…
