#1551 – Flambé

I remember being a kid and seeing commercials for heartburn medicine. They would show some person heating a pile of horrible food and then clutching their chest with pain. I literally thought that they were feeling their heart heat up to a painful level. It made me terrified of chili.

  1. A heartburn is called “halsbränna” in Swedish (literally “throatburn”), but I still didn’t understand what it really was until I got a heartburn myself, because of too much stress at school. The commercials for heartburn medicine made me think that it was something that only happened to adult or middle-aged people, and that it would make them become ridiculously angry for no particular reason.

I remember once spending about half an hour explaining to my Mexacan coworker what heartburn was cause he thought the word had something to do with the actual heart itself.

Hey, that looks like what Sonic had on his chest in that one (Arabian Knights-based? Genie-filled? I really forget. It was on the Wii, so the controls stunk.) game. I think it was due to a curse or something.
Anyone else know what I’m talking about?

Every TV era has it’s frightful medical commercial imagery. One of my favorite ones were the “Indi-GES-tion” bloat from the 70’s, and now the Lamisil nail fungus demon.
