Chapter: Comics
Back in high school we had a “computer lab” where the 10 computers in the building lived that students could use a few times a year to type in a paper and then immediately print it out. In college I had a single “computer art” class that I did a few projects in but that was the extent of it. Somehow all of the painting and illustration classes got by without us having to use Microsoft Excel. This is why I was totally blindsided a few years after college when I was working on a website for a company and had to enter all the names and paths of images into a spreadsheet. “What is this never ending grid of rectangles and what do I do with it?”

Love the comic and want to say you never cease to amaze me with your subject. In this case it hit home really well. My wife is a CPA and head accountant at her job, she knows excel like the back of her hand but anything else computer related she hasn’t a clue. I, on the otherhand, build PCs, do a little programing, and run a computer repair buisness, and yet have never got excel down let alone even put much effort into it.
On a side note for this I’m also deathly afraid of hights and could never bungee jump without having a heart attack.
Spreadsheets are only fun when you make video games outta them :V
I have used spreadsheets to work out engineering problems. My boss once told me I make Bill Gates cry.
Back in high school, we had a “computer room” with a Model 33 teletype on which one person at a time could use the remote timesharing system. In college, we had a room full of keypunch machines, where we could create programs to be run on the mainframe. I’m a professional software engineer, and I’ve only once ever had to use a spreadsheet, and someone had to show me how to enter data into it.
Loving Biff’s eyebrows in this one, and also getting jealous because I’ve never owned a laptop and want to. (Dang ol’ money, needin’ to be used for everythang these days…)
This is all very fine… Until Biff hits the end of the bungee, and the laptop goes on to >crash<
Funny, this reminds me of the game my team submitted to the SpeedHack competition of 2009: http://www.allegro.cc/forums/thread/600897
You’re supposed to program while jumping out of an airplane in it D:
As always – “Biff” is hilarious! Love your work!
When I was in high school … I was using a slide rule. I still own 3 of them. I still know how to use them. Geeze I feel old now …
Oh … regarding heights; My dad always told me “it’s not the fall that kills you … it’s the sudden stop at the bottom.”
Finally caught up, now to wait for the next book to come our so I can actually preorder. Those links I saw in the archive made me feel like a time traveler, but I also felt a little neglected. No preorder for me…
i dont even know what a spread sheet is
Excel? Whats that?
I’m used to using spreadsheets. I usually try to keep a list of item all in the general area.
As to what Barn0wl is saying ’bout the heights, I look down and darn near pass out I couldn’t even get to the edge let alone jump. The qoute I like is “If at first you don’t succeed, so much for skydiving.”
When I was a teen (and younger) I was jumping off 40ft cliffs into the lake. Now I can’t walk on a path that has a 10ft drop to one side without getting dizzy. I Don’t know why?(No traumatic experiances or such) and just has gotten worse over the years.
I too can use a slide rule. It is a good thing if the computer goes down back ups are good. Age is not a factor if I’m correct I’m very close to Chris’ age (30 something) I think I have 2 but can only find one That is what makes me feel old.
@Tanos; LOL! I like that quote too. The whole being cautious of heights is age-related too. At some point as we get older, we realize just how dumb some of the things we did as kids were – we gain a new respect for pain and death.
