#1051 – Chill

Unlike my wife, I grew up in a house without air conditioning. I therefore developed a much higher tolerance for stifling unbearable heat than she does (aka 75 degrees fahrenheit.) She prefers the nights of summer to require our large down comforter to sleep comfortably. I am wearing a sweater right now as I type this.

I love sleeping in a bed with a down comforter, but it usually is too warm for one… even in the winter sometimes.

  2. linuxxorcist says:

i’ve got a fan mounted in my windowsill to draw in air from the outside to cool the house at night, as well as nice new insulation and double pane windows, so the house stays cool during the day.

  3. Miles says:

Man… try living in the desert in the middle of July with no Air Conditioning… I don’t care how many fans you have pushing hot air around, the six degrees cooler does nothing when the temperature is already 110F.
Add to that the fact that I was born in Maine, where it is really really cold come winters. That having been said, I have a much greater range of tolerances for temperature than most anyone else I encounter out here. =
I don’t want a greater tolerance, I want a personal Air Conditioner… especially when I have to walk around outside in the summer here.

Interesting story in relevance, whenever I work outside during the summer, I will wear heavy clothing in middle of very hot day, sun ablazin upon desert ground to which I work upon. What’s more, I tend to work for about an hour or two (even more so). To add to the heat, my heaviest clothing is black.

Why in the name would I do that?

One word: Apiphobia (fear of bees, but in my case, more of wasp)

Needless to say, I am very tolerant of heat to point that I could sleep comfortably while sweating in 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

  5. Kree says:

23.8°C? Is that all? Come visit Australia, that’s a warm day in winter!

  6. i.half4 says:

This week Biff is Hot, Hot, Hot!!!

  7. good.news says:

i think i have a pretty high tolerance to both extremes. sitting in a not air conditioned house in 40+ degree heat (CELCIUS im talkin here), in rooms with many electronics on has kept me from being bad in heat, and going to school on -3 to about .5 degrees in a summer dress has made me fine with cold. yay i guess? XD

  8. i.half4 says:

Not perfectly fitting this week’s theme, but I recently noticed that the first letters of the Underdog theme also stand for Sun Protection Factor:
    Speed of lightning
    Power of thunder
Fighting all who rob or plunder…

  9. Duncman says:

I hate A/C, it makes my nose get all stuffed up. Besides, I wait all crappy winter long for hot weather, so I don’t get why people complain about the cold all winter but when it gets hot they go sit inside a cold house. I always thought that was crazy, and I wear shorts all year long…even during Chicago winters.

  10. Miles says:

It’s because where I live, we only have two seasons, summer and January. Winter here, one doesn’t even need to put on a long sleeve shirt. Of course our annual rainfall is measured in hundredths of an inch…

  11. MaskedMan says:

I’ve been from Colorado to California, Hew Hampshire to Florida, Hawaii to Seatle, Alaska to Wisonsin, Bahrain to Singapore, Iraq to Guam, and beyond.

All told, I don’t really mind temperature extremes – Even without A/C – but I *LOATHE* humidity. Get me a personal dehumidifier like Biff’s Personal A/C, and I’ll be in heaven.

  12. ZackDark says:

I have once visited a city where 99% humidity is almost constant. Now, where I live, 100 degree Fahrenheit in summer is common and I rarely sweat enough to form drops, but, man, when it is that humid, I had a constant sheet of water/sweat all around me all the time.
    I hate humidities over 90%.

  13. ZackDark says:

*(…) when it is that humid, I have a constant (…)

  14. Silversaraph says:

I also have a complete hatred and fear of bees/wasps, so I’ll have long sleeved shirts and sweatpants to avoid them even when working on my plants outside in 100+ degree heat… They’re flying hypodermic needles of death, why can’t people understand my pain?

  15. Guyperson says:

nice thinking detritu- BIFF. I WROTE BIFF.

  16. dartigen says:

In Australia, eggs are cooking on the road before we call it hot. A friend came over from Britain and complained that it was hot. We were all wearing jackets.

With that being said, I can’t function correctly if the temperature drops below 20 degrees Celsius. It’s just too cold for functioning.

  17. Cyndaquazy says:

It’s not the heat that’s unbearable here in the Southern U.S., it’s the almost 100% humidity all summer long that’s the culprit.

  18. Vrominelli says:

The seasons of Washington state are: Winter, almost winter, still winter, road construction.

Meaning that if winter is gone then every road is getting worked on and will be done just in time for winter.

  19. ladyamethyst83 says:

i live in ohio. it’s HOT out right now and I work in a factory with ac only in the break room. we have all 4 seasons but winter can last from November to April if you let it.

  20. jeremythedog says:

where can i purchase this fabulous device? and is there a similar application to pants?

  21. Beege says:

Ew. Heat. I’m allergic to it. 60 degrees is my cut-off point.

On an unrelated note, I’m moving to Alaska.

  22. Cari says:

I need to purchase one of these for my husband. That way he might allow me to raise the temperature in the house to 72…

  23. Kurishi says:

Miles, could you perhaps be living in AZ? That’s the story of my life here. Of course, I don’t do well with cold (reason I moved to Phoenix) and I can only too well understand Chris’s complaint: My roommate can’t sleep if it’s hotter than 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, even though I’m living in the middle of a desert, I STILL have to use my electric blanket. I can’t wait until I live on my own again: I’m in the middle of a desert in the middle of summer, I should NOT be freezing! (And I love the 110+ weather… I want to open windows and get fresh air!)

  24. Polymorph says:

I can take practically any amount of dry heat (once as a kid I was wondering why everyone seemed so sweaty. It was 110F outside.), but as soon as it starts getting even a little bit humid, it’s absolutely unbearable. Of course, I avoid cold temperatures like the plague. I had to wear three jackets (the big poofy kind) to be able to enjoy snow.

  25. -2! says:

I like room temperature to be about 17°C or about 63°F my mother on the other hand likes it to be about 25°C or about 77°F. I think we are both crazy just in the opposite direction. At night I will have my fan and she will have here down confuter on.

“Biff installs a brain cooler so he can think more. The world watches in horror.”

  26. grapy says:

i hate hot days about a month ago i woke up with a wet spot by my head plus i was in a sleeping bag and covered my ears with my blanket

  27. reynard61 says:

Yep, the Biffster knows how to keep a cool head…

  28. ZeoViolet says:

    *Waves hand* Ditto!

My landlord installs the AC’s every summer and there have been summers that the electric bill’s been so high I’ve forestalled it being set up at all, or at least delayed it a month.

He doesn’t know how I can stand it. My blood’s thin and I’m used to it, that’s why.

  29. Twilightfairy says:

*insert obligatory brain freeze joke here*

  30. Miles says:

@Kurishi, Not quite, Coachella Valley, California. It IS hotter in Death Valley say, but not by much. And the year people were dying in Texas because it was too hot, it was ten to fifteen degrees hotter here, and we were making fun of them for dying. =
I will likely be moving to New Mexico some time next month. I seem doomed to inhabit deserts, but at least it will be a milder one.

  31. The Dukenator says:

@ZeoViolet Mine charges $40-50 extra and you have to supply your own AC.

  32. Alakar Voidus says:

I love heat…But I can’t stand the cold. how does biff wear a hat with that thing sticking out of his skull?

“Biff decides that if he’s going to pay for A/C, he might as well be cool all of the time.”

  33. Mister Disco says:

For a long time as a kid, I had a dream of inventing a coat that doubled as a summer coat, with internal AC so you’d have a nice cool breeze while everyone else suffered. Then Japan made one, and it was not very successful… Dream crushed.
