Chapter: Comics
Sick days at at work have always been a weird get out of jail free card. There are so many occasions where you want to plan ahead and make everyone aware that you need a day off but it backfires. Your boss gets crabby “Well, let me see what I can do and I’ll get back to you.” If you were to go back in time and just call in sick on that same day, suddenly it’s no problem. “Ok, hopefully we’ll see you tomorrow.”

I got written up for never taking sick days or paid time off before. =(
I had more Paid time off than anyone in the whole western region of the company at that time. =Þ
It’s only been recently that I’ve had paid time off or vacation time. I’ve never had a boss reject it yet.
OMG I HATE when I’ve told a boss month ahead of time that I can’t come into work on a certain day, yet.. when the day comes I find I’ve been scheduled anyway. I’ve never really had a job I’ve CARED about.. so i often just don’t show or call in sick and tell them there’s NO way i can come in. Thank god for those random sick days. :]
Most food service places are horrible about sick days… From what I’ve noticed, there’s no set policy, and it changes from boss to boss. The only thing that remains constant is that when you call in, whether it’s ten hours before your shift or twenty minutes after you were supposed to be there, you’ve officially become the catalyst that ruins the day for everyone. Anything and everything that goes wrong is blamed on you for not showing up. “Steve wouldn’t have gotten that flat on delivery if you had just shown up, you lazy person.”
… I worked food service too long. -_-
In contrast, the place I work at now (a hotel) is incredibly strict about its sick days. If you are injured, that’s fine. If you’re sick, you don’t come into work for 3 days. We had a lot of trouble during the Swine Flu scare so now you get home if you so much as sniff. The kitchen staff are under equally strict rules – but if you’re on the counter or doing anything that doesn’t involve the food, then it’s only three days before they want a doctor’s certificate.
When I worked at a supermarket, you had to have a doctor’s certificate and you could only take 2 days off. And when the boss found out that I’d had a flu shot, I wasn’t allowed any sick days at all (despite the fact that flu shots only prevent the flu, not every single disease you can catch).
Where I work only the top management have sick days, vacation or benefits. The manager for my department is off at least one day every week and recently he was gone for most of a month. Me, I can’t get off unless I’m one step away from the grave, and then I need a doctors note.
I think the place I work tops them all. You need to give them 24 hour advance notice in order to call in sick otherwise you are written up. So you need to call in sick the day before you get sick.
@duncman – Can you call in sick and then show up anyway?
S is also for sub-themes. Let’s give Chris a hand for bringing back an element of Monday’s “Shade” six fold.
..are the sub-themes by any chance deliberate sidetracks?
I have more PTO (Paid Time Off) than I can comfortably use… If I took all my days, I’d cause key projects to fail. I think HR set it up this way as a sick joke.
And no, one can’t call in sick for jokes.
😛
Biff can probably get called in sick if he ingests some of the product. he wont be staying at home, though, he’ll be sent to the hospital!
why is biff wearing a hair net if he has no hair?
my friends dad has enough pto to take off an entire yr including weekends….. i wonder if they would let him?
Why is biff never happy even when good things happen?
@grapy – Everyone has to follow the same rules.
When I was in residency, the few times I called in sick I was told “someone else has already called in, so you have to come in anyway.” I would always speak to the attending on call, who would go home at 7am, so if later I asked to leave early, whoever was in charge would have no idea that I tried to take the day off, and just thought I was trying to goof off.
I have a t-shirt that says “I used up all my sick days so I called in dead.” and whenever I wear it people want the shirt. I mean they’re willing to BUY it off my back for money they like it so much.
Needless to say I don’t wear it all that often anymore…
there isn’t really sick days where i work. you can call in. they say getting a doctor note helps but it doesn’t help with the points. 8 points and you’re bye bye. so i’ve used my personal days ( a whole 2) to make up for the times i’m sick.
Shouldn’t Biff’s eyebrows be in the hairnet?
@ -2! : Nah, Biff knows his eyebrows aren’t going anywhere. It’s that pesky rabid bald person dandruff that he’s worried about.
My school has an attendance minimum or you fail, its really stupid because people never take sick days off and make everyone else at school sick.
Yes you can still show up but they will have taken your PTO so you might as well stay home
@ Mewthicus
While yes, his eyebrows are not going anywhere, that doesn’t mean there not long enough to qualify as needing a hairnet.
Any time I am forced to attend anything in spite of sickness, I make a point of infecting as many people as possible.
But I have to say, that really didn’t go over too well at that one funeral. Party poopers.
I’ve never had any sick days, as I rarely ever get sick. However, there was one time I got fired from my job, because it was my day off. Apparently, the boss wasn’t in the day before for some unknown reason, but he requested all employees be in for the rest of the day and tomorrow. I figured he knew about my day off, so I didn’t pay it any attention, and decided to stay home.
Hours later, I got a phone call saying I’ve been fired for not appearing at work. My dad was not a happy camper.
