#858 – Cursed

When I was a kid I went through a period of having frequent nightmares. It was sometimes hard to get back to sleep after waking from one. This is when the dim light from the streetlight out my window became a problem. There wasn’t really enough light in the room to see well. There was just enough to see shapes that my brain could turn into something horrible.

My uncle bought me a T-Rex poster from the Lost World taht glowed in the dark…I left it up for maybe a week.

  2. A.L. says:

I had that same problem….and still do.

  3. Delhi K. says:

Ah, I remember, as a child, I had a stuffed Pooka (from the movie Anastasia) that I really loved. And one night, I had a sleepover, and I was scared out of my mind because after my friend fell asleep, I could have sworn its eyes moved. xD

Also, I have a glow in the dark Casper the Friendly Ghost. I tend to hide him at night. xD

I never owned anything that triggered such feelings, but when I was little it made it very difficult to sleep after seeing Tremors,Critters 2, or Jurassic Park. I would always end up imagining these creatures lurking about, of course with tremors, I look back and wonder, I lived in the second story of the house, that isn’t something that’s going to just ‘pop out’ at me….

Why does the Bear in the middle have three Eyes? 🙂
But, yes, everyone goes through that phase I guess.

  7. Nilly says:

Brrr! I had a lot of stuffed animals in my bed when I was little to scare off the night monsters.

Still didn’t stop the night light from turning my toy kitchen into a big freaky monster-shadow. -__-

When I went through my nightmares, I usually had them at stupid times. Like, falling asleep on the couch in the middle of the day. My parents woke me up from that one. The funny part is, I was screaming in my sleep because in my dream, someone stole my balloon. .-.
When I was in my room though, I kept my eyes away from the scarier objects. If I stared at my ceiling fan light, I thought I could see little pixies going around it~ xD

Don’t you open that Trap Door!

  10. I had a nightmare about my computer once, looooong time ago…

Took me years to sleep properly anywhere near any kind of screen, TV or computer.

    Poor Biff 🙁

  12. billy says:

I used to have a glow-in-the-dark skeleton that we put on the door for Halloween. Because I had more empty closet space, it got to be stored there during the rest of the year. Needless to say, it only took me a couple nights to learn to close my closet door before bed.

  13. sco3tt says:

    @soilent – it’s the Evolution bear.

On the good side, if you can see all their eyes you know they’re not behind you. OMG, they’re behind you, TURN AROUND!

  14. dartigen says:

Ohhh, I get that all the time. It’s really bad when your jacket hanging up looks like someone standing over the bed, your guitar case looks like that creepy girl from The Ring, the tree outside moving around is really a xenomorph wondering if you are worth eating and the shoe next to your bed is an arm (like in The Grudge, it just pops out of nowhere).
Mostly I just pull the blankets over my face and try to ignore it all.

  15. Chris says:

    @dartigen – I’m glad I haven’t seen those movies.

  16. Nicoli20 says:

I had a nightmare about invading ants after watching a sci-fi movie. When I woke up from the nightmare, I could see a crawling, 2 inch long ant on the side of my bed. 5 seconds later, it started fading away.

It’s probably the only time I could project life-like images from my dreams. I was probably half-asleep or something.

  17. Ziggy Stardust says:

I get really afraid of the dark. It does not help that my blinds do not cover my window all the way, and anyone could peek in. I have to distract myself at night- I read, and fall asleep listening to music. The light from my computer screen and Windows Media application is enough to still any fears I had.
Apparently I’ve had the odd nightmare because sometimes I wake up with my eyes red and my face all weird-feeling from sobbing in the night. I’m sometimes really glad I don’t remember my dreams.

  18. weerd2normal says:

i have sleep panic disorder, like the guy from bedtime stories if you have seen it, so i will wake up sometimes just absolutely scared out of my wits, and i will just go back to sleep, its funny sometimes, like once i was at friends house, and he recorded me, and i was just panting and grunting siting up, then boom, right back down to sleep

  19. sic says:

As a kid, i thought the flushing of the toilet was evil. So I waited for the very last moment, before I flushed it and ran out of the room, closing the door behind me. This was especially… smelly if i took a dump before…

  20. HollyWd says:

As a kid I had a bear collection, and I always thought Teddy Ruxpin was the most evil bear in existence. He was always glaring at me from the shelf. For those who don’t know this evil mastermind he was an animatronic doll who read stories — here is a commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kc2HvjO8z4

  21. 84 says:

my dreams are fairly weird to begin with,so i dont really get nightmares.having several large monster dudes for friends helps.
a normal dream for me can have anything from bad zombies swarming the local mall,to being stuck in a deserted school after hours,to the world ending.somehow everything works out in the end though.
oh.and mr. chris.thankyou for posting this comic.it cheered me mom up a good bit, after some jerk down the street wrecked her car…

  22. Kree says:

When I was young I never needed objects or shadow shapes to see creepy things, my brain was hyperactive enough to create monsters out of nothing. I remember I used to have super-bright night lights, not from fear of the dark, but because I was afraid of what kind of faces my brain would create if I had nothing to stare at.

  23. Mr. B says:

When I was 3 or 4 years old, a transformer on a light pole outside my bedroom window self-destructed very colorfully like a fireworks display. At that tender age I had no concept of much of anything and thought the world was ending.

  24. DrNeverland says:

I actually had a nightmare where glowing eyes were looking in on me from the darkened windows of my bedroom. Some of them had very sharp grins that showed up too.
