#1142 – Point

For some reason, in the jobs that I’ve had, the dress code has somehow gotten more and more strict the further I have been removed from interacting with actual customers. The first jobs where I was running a cash register and preparing food for people the only requirement was “No holes.” I worked my way up to business casual at a company that doesn’t have physical stores. All of our customers connect with us on the website. I’m still not used to this bulky tuxedo I have to wear as an internet cartoonist.

Try working in a cleanroom around space flight hardware. Around electronics that are sensitive to ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge, troublesome down to a few volts with tiny geometries) you must wear cotton (NO polyester, NO wool), so it doesn’t charge, and wrist- and heel-straps. You’ll also want fairly cool, since you’ll probably be in a smock or full bunny-suit, depending on the class of room and hardware requirements. Jeans and T-shirts are pretty normal; clean is good. Friday is Hawaiian Shirt Day at JPL (or used to be).

You’re lucky, I teach sky-diving, and I have to wear a wedding dress to work.

So that is what biff does…

Well, hiking wouldn’t be everything, he’s got that office space too.

Where I work (sales clerk) dress is suit pants + dress or polo shirt, Manager’s have to wear stuff that’s more formal altogether, but it can also be more decorative, so there’s at least some trade-off going on as far as dress-code goes.

  5. Baughbe says:

You’re gonna put somebody’s eye out with that!

    Something-about-clothes Week!

…lets just hope there isn’t a MATHS compass in the tie aswell…
    ….YOUCH!

    This begs the question…
WHY is he hiking when he’s a businessman?

    Oh, wait, I know.

“They’re having a sale on doughnuts a country over. Biff, we wan’t you to go and buy as many as possible. Oh, and we don’t want to waste money on transport, so enjoy the hike!”

  7. i.half4 says:

@Baughbe: Really? Who else is Biff gonna harm in his world? He might fall down and break his neck if he keeps looking where he’s going more so than where he is, but that’s no problem. He’ll just go back to Chris and say:

    Draw me a neck.

Could cut someone’s throat, if you’re not careful…

  9. RockinRico says:

I hate dresscodes, I had to wear a suit in mid summer just to be developing webpages without ever having to meet clients… and I live in a very hot place in spain… :_(

P.D: I’ll never made this gravatar thing work -_-U

  10. Niha says:

RockinRico, could it be that anything web related requires formal attire? One of my brothers is working as online courses teacher and he has to wear shirt and tie (and suit pants)

  11. Obsidia Black says:

The day I wear a suit and tie on the job is the day I start looking through the classified.

  12. howlslikewolf says:

Business hiker … those aren’t hiking boots, or business shoes. Still in his green sneakers!

  13. Anon says:

    Howlslikewolf- Biz cash Friday, obviously~!

So, Biff has his compass-tie, a rocket-toilet… I believe a magical yarn ball? Or is that Perseus?

  14. RPharazon says:

At my university, the aviation students have to wear a dress shirt, dress pants, shined business shoes, and a tie.
You can spot them a mile away.

  15. YukiYukimura says:
