#1084 – Vented

Some people can get pretty frustrated when they run into local laws that tell them what they can or can’t do with their property. I think my favorite stories are ones where the home owner is presented with a list of “approved” colors to paint his house with and so decides to use ALL of them.

To be fair, some people paint their houses in eye-gouging colors. The worst I ever saw was Vomit green with neon pink trim.
*shudder*

2. Ledish says:

Some shopowner here in town (in Sweden) tried to repaint his door in a new color… He got reported by the other people in the street and had to restore it.

Biff lives with prairie dogs?!

4. Bok says:

Painting your house in all the approved colours isn’t going to help much if the list of approved colours is:
1. white.

5. Brassaw says:

I’m actually working on a a house right now that was painted in a form of protest, using ten different shades of purple, pink, and yellow. The previous owners proved that all of the colors were “period” to the construction of the house. I’m not sure that it meant all of them were meant to be used…

Let’s hope those chimneys don’t all connect to a different fireplace.

7. MaskedMan says:

Couldn’t be as bad as the mortuary painted in flat black. With violet trim work and white awnings.
😮

OK. I got the bit about barking tulips and mail carriers. But what the heck is up with all the chimneys?

9. ZeoViolet says:

i.half4: “Prairie dog country” is where in some areas in country fields there are millions of prairie dogs living in tunnels beneath the dirt, and just as many holes that lead to the surface. All the tunnels below are connected, and there are lots, and lots of ways to get outside, so the whole place is dotted with holes.

Now compare that to Biff’s roof.

Had a lady here once who painted her house like a Barbie house. Pink, purple, white. Oh my GOD what an eyesore!….and she created her lawn to match. The next owner of the house, embarrassed, painted it brown.

@i.half4 Maybe Biff is doing a symphony involving chimneys?
Or maybe its a reference to Mary Poppins.

this reminds me of whack a mole or in in biffs case whack a santa

12. Falos says:

“What you can and can’t do with your own house” does sound like a load.

13. Cari says:

@ i.half4:
Prairie dog colonies live underground in a series of tunnels with many openings. That way if they see a predator, they’re never have to run too far to a hole.

I heard of a family who got cited for having too many sculptures in their BACK yard. The neighbors could see them over the fence and complained.

14. Micah says:

I do not envy Santa on Christmas at the Biff household.

15. i.half4 says:

Thanks Cari. It was the prarie dog connection I was looking for, but thanks also Dukenator for chiming in.

My apologies also for looking sense and reason in The Book of Biff. It won’t happen again very often because… See? I really mean it.

Yeah, the regs can get stupid at times. But if you check the history of why it was written, you will almost always find some jerk who was doing their best to make life miserable for everyone else. So the regs got written to put an end to their shenanigans. Unfortunately when regs (laws, codes, rules, instructions, etc) are written, it is done with the intent of doing one specific thing without considering all the possible ways it could be miss-used or miss-interpreted.

Meanwhile, where’s my giant rubber mallet?

@Bok, if you tried, I’d bet you could come up with some really eye disturbing effects using different shades of white.

I’m not too crazy about living in the suburbs. The colors of the houses are drab at best. Reminds me of a European perspective-based stereotype that in the Baltic region, the people live in grey houses. I’m not sure if it’s true, but I guess I shouldn’t shrug off what my acquaintance in Denmark says. She knows quite a lot.

18. Paul says:

when i own a house , im going to paint it neon green with neon blue door……. just to get pizza delivery without directionms

Ah Stornwood Court and it’s random rules. We won a fight of them trying to evict our dog with the fact that doing that is actually Illegal for them to not allow pets You can’t have satellite TV (because of the satellite dishes on the outside of the buildings).

20. MaskedMan says:

@Baughbe;
You just gave me some really sinister ideas… 👿

21. Micah says:

@Baughbe –Some guy in Texas got in trouble with his housing group because he had a pickup. I think it was expensive, but work related and they threw a fit about it. Really ridiculous.

22. SilentDragon says:

I guess the building requirements in the comic are to keep it looking like a prairie as mush as possible, and to make sure the prairie dogs can still come up out of their tunnels, though they might need to reconsider how they work that…

Speaking of strange rules, it’s illegal to die in the house of parliament (Britain)
There are so many strange rules out there, one has to wonder what kind of nutso created it and why anyone would ok it…

23. i.half4 says:

@Baughbe: Step out the front door like a ghost into a fog where nobody notices the contrast of white on white… – Counting Crows

@Silent Dragon: So that explains the Bill Cosby bit (w/accent): “I’m so terribly sorry to be leaning, but my life is leaving me you see.”

24. Tech says:

“Approved colors” you say? Lawsuit, I say. As long as I do no harm to my fellow man, I can do whatever I please.
On a related note, I always thought that graffiti looked cool, so I figured, that as long as no-one spraypainted something rude onto my wall, I’d let the neighborhood kids “tag” my house.
