So, what kind of video games do you guys play? I don't really play much, since I lost my gamecube memory card and I only have 4 games that aren't gamecube. Man, I need more PS2 games. All I have is Shadow of the Colossus (Awesome game, I totally recommend it to everyone) and Katamari Damacy. I got bored of the Wii after I beat TP.

I also play some KoL, but I went on a hiatus. Now I've started playing again, a mere three weeks before NS-13. ;x

I play everything except sports and racing games, and my current-gen consoles are Wii, Xbox 360 and DS. Although I think the most versatile gaming is to be found on PC, I can't afford a computer that is powerful enough to play the latest PC games  Cry. I take a very serious and objective approach to the gaming industry; I'm actually the editor-in-chief of a small videogame magazine at my school. We have a whole team of writers and reviewers, and circulate it once a month, so I have to keep up to date on all genres and platforms. My Live gamertag is "Cudzu", so look me up if you want to play some Halo or Gears of War or something...

Currently, I'm hooked on Dawn of War.  Before that it was Guitar Hero 1 and 2, until my PS2 broke.  I also really like retro arcade games, I have and play space invaders on my computer, and I have an old NES set up in my room which gets semi-frequent use.
I generally have a computer thats a few years behind the times so I don't generally play games until they're a few years old.  Its too expensive to stay right at the forefront on the gaming industry.

I'm a big Nintendo fan myself.  The Xbox and Playstation consoles have just never had enough games I'm after to warrant a purchase, and I'm just hooked on the fun lil worlds of Mario and such.  I play games to escape from real life so I prefer fun happy cheery games like Mario, Sonic, Zelda and the like than depressing realistic shoot-em-ups and RTS games and such.  I can play Mario 64 over and over again and never get bored, so I don't really see any problem with me not liking what so many hardcore gamers refer to as "real" games.  I guess I am a hardcore gamer myself but prefer mastering my favourite one player adventures over spending hours leveling up on RPGs or winning online tournaments on shoot em ups.  I far prefer console games to PC as well - while PC games have the bonus of customisation, and keyboard and mouse can allow for much more accurate movement in certain genres, I just find controllers so much easier and comfortable to use.  Heck, even for shooters I find it easier, though that's more a case of being used to it than anything else (I'm one of the few people who prefer the Goldeneye set-up, forward and back movement and horizontal aiming applied to one input, with strafing and vertical aiming to the other - control stick and C-stick/buttons in my Nintendo playing case.

But yeah.  Recently I've been playing a lot of Gamecube games like Smash Bros. Melee and Sonic Riders and brushing up my skills on Wii Sports.

Favourite games of all time would be Super Mario 64, Paper Mario Series (Super is yet to get a release date here annoyingly, but I loved the first two loads due to their greater emphasis on technical skill over just leveling up with random battles to improve), Zelda OoT and Majora's Mask (Wind Waker and TP are great too but I guess nostalgia of simpler days makes OoT and MM stick out for me), Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.  Oh, and Sonic Riders I guess - when I start playing that I won't be able to stop for like, a week.

On a much greater retro level, I'll always have a special place in my heart for Super Mario Bros. 2, my first ever game, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on Master System - my second ever game, and first ever Sonic game.  These two games are what set the standard for what I'd enjoy in gaming for the rest of my life.

I have been with the nintendo ever since it first came out

Considering your profile says you're 16, that's not actually possible, considering they've been making games since like, 1980 or so (I know the NES came out in 85 but there was arcade stuff before that...).

Of course I could be really picky and include all of their work in the card game and other forms of entertainment before video games in their grand timeline.

Nintendo first broke into the videogame market in 1981, with Donkey Kong, also the 19-year-old Shigeru Miyamoto's first title. Since we're on the subject, I may as well give the Nintendo lecture.

I've always been Nintendo's man. This is for several reasons, but those qualities have also produced their greatest weaknesses. Nintendo is the only serious force on the hardware market that is exclusively videogames, and they have also been in the hardware industry the longest. They just understand videogames and gamers better than anyone else, and consequently view videogames as videogames, not just accessory to the electronic media army-knife. See, videogames are approaching the end of the technological frontier, and while Sony ploughs ahead with brute force and Microsoft tries to integrate videogames into other media outlets, Nintendo seeks to change and improve the way we play the games themselves. They understand that this is the future of the videogame industry, not raw power or multimedia functions. This can be seen in the DS and the PSP. We have paragon examples of both companies’ philosophies, but the DS has trumped the PSP on every front. Nintendo understands what a handheld should be: something that you can carry around with you, throw in your pocket and whip it out without a second thought. The DS is this, the PSP is not.

Why has this success not carried over to the console market? The question is not if, but when. The problem is that Nintendo seems to have dropped out of the technological climb a generation or two too early. While improving the way we play games and drawing in new audiences certainly is important - and it is only Nintendo that has given this enough attention - if Nintendo had only embraced technology in the Wii, it could be as dominant in the videogame market as Sony and Microsoft now are. Some argue that it is a powerful a force in this generation as Sony and Microsoft, but most gamers rely on Xbox or Playstation for the truly latest and greatest games, and only buy a Wii in addition, for its cheap price, and to play Nintendo's aces on an innovative platform.

It has also taken its videogame purism, which has many strengths, to the point of outright isolation - from both other forms of electronic media and third-party developers. It relies almost entirely on its own signature franchises (fortunately, Nintendo is probably the best developer on the market.), and most of its decent third-party games can be found on other consoles.

But it may pay off later, and Nintendo has found a niche in the Wii - in price, flagship franchises, and uniqueness - that, with a domination of the handheld market, it can cruise through this generation to hopefully enjoy the success in the console market of the DS in the handheld market, and emerge a more serious contender in the next generation.

But no matter what happens, I'll always be Nintendo's man...

I own a psp.  I like it.  I use it more as an mp3/movie player then a gaming system though.

Its biggest issue is its fragile.  I had one break and had to get the screen replaced, and now the headphone jack is kinda broken.

When i bought a DS, i asked the clerk how sturdy the touch screen was, in case i got enthusiastic and accedently poked it too hard with the stylus.  His reply was "Nintendo made it."

Sure enough, no amount of stabbing mario to get him to bounce in a Mario 64 minigame would break the screen.

I also own a GBA SP that, due to rough handling, has no paint or enamel left on it.  Its just dull white raw plastic now.

Goes to show you could probibly beat a man to death with your avarage nintendo product and keep on playing.

Nintendo's biggest mistakes, up until recently, have been targeting primarily children and lack of online play, and reverse compatibility for consoles.
We're on the 7th generation of consoles now, and in 30 years we've gone from Pong to Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.

Basically, Microsoft has good foresight in their game development and markets things that are established sellers.  Online play, reverse compatibility, and getting out on the market first.

Sony, who basically ruled the 6th generation with the PS2, were depending on a solid fanbase to market the PS3 to, and in the end they got greedy, and have since payed dearly.  2 billion in financial losses dearly.

Nintendo products are made by people who just like gaming, and have open minds.  nintendo has all the best and worst innovations in gaming under their belt. First light gun, first portable gaming system, first analog controller, first motion sensitive controller, and first rumble pack are Nintendo's highlights.  The virtual boy (which burned your retina's with extended play), the power glove (which only came in one size), and the DS fm radio add on are examples of nintendo's screw-ups.  Points for trything though.

has suffered that kiddy image, but I don't think that they target younger audiences, it has just sort of come out that way. They certainly like to keep their own games lighthearted - and you have to remember that by Japanese standards, a lot of things that Americans or Europeans would consider kiddy, girly, or just plain weird (Katamari Damacy) are commonplace - but that seems to be in their aim to appeal to a wide audience. It is really astounding how well Mario, Zelda, and even Starfox 64 (the lewdest line being "Now it's our turn to kick some tail!") can appeal to both kids and adults.

As far as the last generation, Sony was largely the most successful, but I don't know if it 'dominated'. Relatively speaking, I'd say the Xbox was the most impressive because Microsoft managed to put its brand new console in rivalry with two companies that had long established fan bases and franchises.

But the PS2 did seem to make Sony arrogant. This is the one time that Sony is gong to get away with charging $600 for a console. That's it, no one is ever going to be able to pull that off again. And even then, a raw slab of power and Blue Ray isn't enough. By the time it finally releases, Xbox already has a huge install base, a full library, and excellent online infrastructure in place. Now Sony has lost some of their best exclusive franchises (the loss of GTA and Final Fantasy alone is devastating). I am actually entertaining the possibility that this is Sony's last run in the console market - either that or they are going to have to make some serious changes.

And I just hate Sony's image - while Nintendo looks soft, when I think of Playstation I think of these mature, belligerent titles that revel in their own immoderation - just to show how realistic and badass they can be. Almost as though they're trying to appeal only to the hardcore, and at $600, that might not be far from the truth. Frankly, I can't fit a game like Kingdom Hearts into its palette.

Blast it...

Cation: Fanboy Rants Smiley. But seriously, I love all of the consoles and I hope all succeed. They all have their strengths and weaknesses and thats what I love about it. There is no perfect console which makes all consoles great.

I love all consoles as well, but only own-and plan to own-Nintendo and Sony consoles.  If I feel like playing X-Box, I'll borrow someone else's.  Any kind of game 'cept most racing games and all sports games 'cept hockey.
