Okay, I was rifling through this book case that we have upstairs, where we keep all these old crusty books and copies of the bible.(I'm pretty sure they were stolen from various hotel rooms) One of the corners of this bookcase is reserved for my dad's old comics, and I've spent many hours looking through copies of 'the far side'  and other similar things.
Right up against the wall, I found three thin, very crusty comic books. The first two were Zap comics, and the third was CAPTAIN AMERICA!

I've never really liked Captain America. I'm not sure why, he just never really appealed to me. I also hadn't ever seen him or read about him extensively, so I never knew too much about him. I found (issue 107) and now I want to read marvel comics!

Yes, the story was cool, and I now like Captain America, but my favorite part of the entire thing was the ads. There were advertisements for weight gaining pills! Weight GAINING pills. I thought this was hilarious. In this day and age, where we like scrawny, skinny dudes with emo haircuts, and people are constantly trying to lose weight, something like a weight gaining pill being sold as a common thing would be laughed at.

Also, there were ads that boasted 'get from $1.00 to $5.00 in prizes EVERY WEEK!'
Wow. $5.00. I'm excited.

Anyways...This was cool. Have any of you ever found antique comics of your parents lying around?

LOVE Zap.
Back on topic, I've found two of my parent's old comics. One was Zap, which is pure undiluted awesomeness, and the other was a hardcover collection of all the Watchmen books, which is also ridiculously sweet.

Also, weight gain pills and treatments are still in use today, by starving people and by wrestlers and the like who want to go up weight classes.

Yes, it is! Only mine is all crusty and falling apart...The front was separate from the rest and everythings crumbling off....

And Yes, weight gain stuff is used today, but not in regular society. I highly doubt you'll find an ad in the Newspaper that says (and I quote) "Tired of being SKINNY?"

I don't have any old ones but I am a huge comic book nerd. Just ask me anything and I should know 80% of the time.

I don't. Ever heard of those systems for the "ninety pound weaklings"?

no...

I really want to read marvel comics now! Is there anyplace I can read them online? (for free of course, I'm a cheapskate.)

A really good series that I recently picked up is "runaways." It brings up a lot of old superheroes, and the new characters are really cool!

"Runaways" is good and Marvel.com has some comics on their site. If you really want, you can always get collections of comics in hard or soft bound books too.

The things they have on their site are only samplers, aren't they?
I want to get the comics, but I don't have much money.

Comics are one of the few nerdisms I don't indulge in; I rarely like the stories, the art is generally of a style I dislike, and I don't really like superheroes much.

I'm not a big comic nerd either, but you can get hours of entertainment from reading about the superheroes on Wikipedia. It gives you a description, tells you their powers, and discusses their importance in various plot arcs.

You really need to get the comics. I recently got "Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash". It was EPIC! I also have all of the marvel zombies works and the death of Captain America. All in all though, my favorite is still Man-Thing.

The Uncanny X-Men was my favorite comic.

This is the first comic I ever bought:

Now who's the dirty-minded one, Orangey?
Tongue

I don't think my parents ever read comics. They just don't seem the type.

*Facepalm* Man-Thing is a character that was a scientist named Ted Sallis who is trying to recreate the formula that made Captain America. After finding the intention of the formula, he runs and dies in the Florida Everglades. Sometime later he is reanimated with the swamp and is now Man-Thing.

My parents would only let me read mild stuff. Sonic the Hedgehog was okay, though.

Maybe it's because my parents didn't like spending more money then they had to.

This is when you get a job and buy your own comics...

If I could LIVE in a bookstore/ comics store (aka, Powells!) I would be completely content.

I remember the Sonic comics! The ones I had weren't the Archie ones, they were... I forget ^^;
But they had Knuckles and stuff in, as well as some kind of army that wanted the chaos emeralds and used Robotnik as a pawn? Also; side-stories, such as Tails being a detective.
o.O
I really can't remember much...

I just remembered; my dad used to collect Iron Man comics, but he stopped because we moved and he wasn't in contact with his supplier anymore.
