Biff’s Diary #5

The thing I hate most about going to get an eye exam is how often I’m pressured into trying contacts again. I tell them no. They just aren’t for me but there is this constant background noise that I’m some kind of an idiot for wanting to wear glasses. Just give me my glasses!

  1. Okay, so Biff has been squinting all this time because of poor eyesight?

    And he looks so creepy when he’s wearing contacts! He doesn’t even need to dress up as anything on Halloween! He can go as a pale man without ears and with a creepy stare!

    Now he can watch us read him!

    The worst thing about switching to contacts is the sudden visibility of massive bags under one’s eyes that were previously hidden by the glasses. There’s also a lot of squinting.

    About once a year, a new friend switches to contacts and for a few months they look as if they went boxing the night before. Eventually they either go away or the person just switches back to using glasses.

    As a contacts wearer, I can actually suggest a few retorts in favor of glasses:
    – glasses are cheaper over time;
    – contacts can cause complications: by combining improper cleaning and abrasions, you can get sight-threatening infections, such as corneal ulcerations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_contact_lens_complications);
    – even without infections, long-term use may wear out your cornea over time, such that eventually you won’t be able to wear them – or even get certain eye surgeries;
    – some people just never get comfortable with having to stick something into their eye.

    I prefer wearing contacts to glasses for a few reasons:

    – I prefer an uninterrupted field of view.
    – I like being able to wear regular sunglasses.
    – Sports (including shooting, and especially watersports) are much easier without being blind/wearing glasses.

    However, I developed an allergy to contacts and am now permanently unable to wear them. :\

    I got lasik 10 years ago and don’t miss glasses at all.

    Oh, and the idea of sticking my finger in my eye just goes against nature.

  7. I always wanted glasses when I was a kid. Very happy with mine now.

    I would likely still be wearing contacts if they weren’t so expensive for me. I have an astigmatism in both eyes, so i can’t wear the ‘cheap’ contacts.
