#874 – Rind

The first time I saw Muenster cheese in the grocery store as a kid I misread the label and thought it was called monster cheese. This of course made it taste better. I insisted we always get it instead of the generic tasting American cheese slices. I felt more grown up eating it because the packaging was more complicated with little pieces of paper separating each slice. I was really sad 6 or 7 years later when I mentioned how much I liked monster cheese to a friend and he said “Um… What are you talking about?”

You should always be careful when dealing with exotic cheeses.

  2. Space Butler says:

    @Shorty
    Wise words.

  3. Kasain says:

that’s awesome, i like monster cheese too ^_^ whoot *chuckels* i laughed at myself when i realized that that was the reason my mom was looking at me so funny, heehee

  4. soilent says:

It’s allways funny how americans misread european words ๐Ÿ˜›

  5. jake says:

it always made me think of Herman Munster. so, similarly to your situation, it made it taste a lot better than plain cheddar.

  6. Iggy says:

sooooo Muenster cheese, what does it mean?

  7. azurelunatic says:

Monster cheese! That’s what my father and I called it, though deliberately for fun. He felt it was his duty to introduce us to interesting cheeses at a tender age, although I was scared off pepper jack after a bad run-in — ordinarily he scooped out the bits of pepper with his pocket knife to make it palatable for me (I was perhaps three), but he missed one — so after that I stuck to safe things like Muenster.

  8. Croc says:

@Iggy – Probably has to do with its place of origin.

  9. Tigergulp says:

Mmm…cheeeeeeeeese. As long as it isn’t Limburgher, I’m great!

  10. Solace says:

Cheese is one of Nature’s perfect foods. Which means American Cheese Food Product…is not. On the other hand, it tastes sort of like cheese, so, win! Although I first thought Biff was holding a stick of shortening. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  11. Rasheed says:

Ah yes, RIP Fred Gwynne, Al Lewis & ‘Peggy’ Middleton (aka Yvonne de Carlo). They sure knew how to make cheese. Wait, what?

I have a great-aunt that to this day pronounces knife ‘kah nife’ I assume to be joking, but she’s been doing this for 75 years!

  12. xarexerax says:

Muenster is a fantastic cheese. As for “Pasteurized Process Cheese Food” … no way, man. I wouldn’t feed that plastic junk to my cheese!

  13. AdmiralChaos says:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muenster_cheese might prove helpful.

I’ve always pronounced words phoenetically if I didn’t know their proper pronunciation… heh. Many an english teacher has gotten mad at me for it ๐Ÿ˜€

  14. ladyamethyst83 says:

when i was little (i’m the oldest of 4) we couldn’t pronounce parmesan cheese. so we use to call it “green cheese” because it came in a green lid container. We still call it that and I’m 26 now.

  15. Amy says:

Parmesan was, to me and my siblings, “Powdered Cheese,” the spaghetti appropriate version of “Powdered Sugar.”

  16. BandusGeekius says:

MONSTER CHEESE IS THE BEST CHEESE EVER! My family member’s all looked at me like I was insane when I would call it “monster” cheese. It took about 3 years after than til someone told me that it was pronounced “MUN-ster cheese”

  17. Libraman says:

Huh, I thought it was pronounced MOO-en-ster. ๐Ÿ˜

  18. Drakey says:

    Wait, I’m confused…
Where does the “x” sound come in?

They need to come up with a new cheese that’s vicious, bloodthirsty, and tastes something like cheddar crossed with the enduring flavor of evil. That would be monster cheese. Or Count Cheesula.
    I’m not quite sure.

  19. SharkJumper says:

It’s really Mรผnster; Meunster is just an approximation. Regardless, that’s a diphthong — a double-vowel sound. Moo-enster is close, but only without dwelling on the e.

  20. SharkJumper says:

Er, *Muenster. “eu” is another diphthong entirely.

  21. plipsig says:

@ Drakey: Cabot Cheese makes two that might qualify: Habanero Cheddar and Hot Buffalo Wing Cheddar. I’ve only had the first one — like trying to eat red-hot acid-dipped razor blades, but so full of cheesy yumminess, you don’t want to stop. If that isn’t the flavor of evil, what is?

  22. ZachLight says:

    ….well…..I….um…..run away?
(a friend of mine) I DON’T KNOW ANYMORE!

  23. sco3tt says:

    Wait, it’s NOT monster cheese?

    NOOOOOoooooo

  24. Micah says:

    That’s a really enjoyable cheese.

  25. maz says:

psh, I still call it monster just for kicks, and it’s one of the best kinds of cheese you can get without paying an arm and a leg.

  26. Matt Lee says:

Well, Biff can be reassured now that he will in fact not be eaten by his cheese.

  27. Kimmeh says:

Ohh, so that’s how it’s spelled… I read this story and they talk about monster and gorgonzila cheese. Always wondered where the monster one came from.
(the series: Xanth by Piers Anthony)

  28. sco3tt says:

    hmm, and a gorgon IS a monster . . . there’s a cheesespiracy there somewhere, I just know it!

  29. Marr965 says:

I didn’t know there was such a thing as cheese piracy. Hmmm… Blocks of dairy products, sailing the high seas…

  30. Amarikah says:

(tips hat) This is my favorite cheese, and you have made a comic for it. Thank you, good sir. 8D

  31. Madison says:

The first time I got Muenster cheese with that packaging, I found a piece of paper in my sandwich and was majorly confused until I made another sandwich the next day and noticed the separators.

  32. Cari says:

Monster cheese is good, but it’s that werewolf cheese you have to watch out for

  33. Otakon says:

    Gouda, is Gooda

  34. akigawa says:

grilled muenster cheese sandwich = <3

  35. Old Geezer says:

Ah, me too! Same story: When I was a kid, I thought muenster cheese was called “monster” cheese. May or may not be a coincidence that it was my favorite cheese back then.

  36. Marscaleb says:

Aww man… I think I’ve made it through all the archives to the pages I’ve actually read before…
