#788 – Buckethead

Did pot pies get their name because they were once made in an actual pot? For most of my life I only knew them as the little frozen things that came in the little metal tray. My mom always served them to us face down in the middle of a large plate like a sawed off Devil’s Tower replica. I never saw someone eat one face up out of the tray until college. That’s when my brain went “Oh hey… it’s like a miniature pie.”

Hey! Long time reader, first time commenter! I love the comic and its single-panel, long-eyebrows epicness. Great work!

Also, I abhor pot pies. Of all types.

  2. Admiral Hippyvoxel says:

Oh no, I finished the archive D:. Biff is definitely in my top five favourite web-comic list, thanks.

  3. Steriema says:

    Pie! Pie! Pie!
It’s funny to read Biff, and read about things you don’t see in Europe. All those typical American stuff… Love to see it.
Never heard of pie till two years, and never heard of pot pie too.

  4. Greyryder says:

Cephalopod Surprise! (Google it, it’s from the guy who gave us Skippy’s List.)

I think they call it a pot pie, because it’s filled with stuff usually made in a pot. But, I like your version, better.

  5. Calypzo says:

Yeah, I’ve had those little pies sometimes. Occaisionally upside-down.
@Steriema: Where in Europe are you from? Just interested because you only heard of pie recently, and it’s not particularly uncommon in lots of places.

  6. MontyFang says:

    I love apple pie… I wonder if that’s what Biff is eatting…

  7. Matt Lee says:

The comic says “squid pot pie.” Seems pretty plain to me.

  8. i.half4 says:

Okay. All I’m getting is movie references again. John Bender from The Breakfast Club: “Go fix me a turkey pot pie.” Buckethead does sound like a band, though. Or am I thnking of Radiohead?

Where did I put those notes?

  9. i.half4 says:

@Monty Fang: Black apple pie… Sounds horid from a culinary perspective, but interesting in an artisitc or poetic sense.

PS: Welcome to the current state of Biff’s world. (noting temporal arrival at the end of yesterday’s thread)

  10. vortexofdoom97 says:

Buckethead is a crazy guitar player. Sort of a band, but not quite.

  11. ZeoViolet says:

Argh. My mom did the upside-down part too. I’d eat the crust and the meat but never touch the veggies. Since growing up I’d eat the rest, but I’ve never done it upside-down and I learned how to use a Microwave. *L*

  12. Nilly says:

I don’t know how anybody can stand pot pie. *bleh* I’ve never liked it.

  13. Karl says:

    1. Pot Pie is the best. (Especially the crust)
    2. Buckethead is one of the best guitarists there is, and he was raised by chickens, too!
    3. Squid should stay out of pie’s business. Eww!

  14. baughbe says:

Many many years ago, when I was a kid (somewhere between the ice ages), pot pies had actual meat and real vegetables in them. Not so now for many years. I cannot recall the last time I found an actual bite sized chunk of meat in one of those. And since they have about tripled the salt content to make up for the missing ingrediants, I haven’t bothered with one for some time now.

  15. Mophtran says:

@i.half4 Buckethead is indeed a band. A good one, too. 😀

  16. Chris says:

    @Distortion – Thanks for reading!
@Admiral Hippyvoxel – Yay top five!

  17. Biligum says:

Ah, pie. A delicious baked treat AND a bemusingly infinite mathematical constant (depending on the spelling). Best of both worlds. 3.141592653589793238462643383, and all that. Anyway, pot pies are… interesting, I guess. The only one I’ve ever had is a chicken pot pie that my mom makes. They are out there, baughbe! But anyway, because of that, I guess I can’t really comment either way about them.

  18. Biligum says:

And also, this is a tad off-topic, but everytime I listen to “Woohoo” and “Stepping Up To The Microphone” by the Newsboys, I always imagine that Biff is the one singing them. So I’d like to know: does that make me a nutjob or a revolutionary? (Personally, I’m guessing nutjob.)

  19. ZackDark says:

pot pies are way more commom here than big pies
even the big pies are smaller than american ones

@Biligum: not so much, since a lot of them aren’t perfect circles. heck, we even have rectangular ones 😛

  20. ZackDark says:

by the way, rectangular pies rule. the corners are awesomely good to eat

  21. Steriema says:

@ Calypzo: Not particularly never heard of pie, but of pie as part of a meal, and not as being dessert. Apple pies I do know, but like the meal pie, or a pie where you put things in that you used to put in pots, never heard of… Is it like quiche?

  22. baughbe says:

After all this discussion, I’m going out, buying some really thick stew and pie crusts and making my own!

  23. Linzleh says:

Hoping that’s not breakfast pie, ‘inky’ way to start Biff’s day…
    @Baughbe: I’m with you

  24. Radical Edward says:

    Squid pot pie? Eww…

As for me, I don’t like savory pies. I prefer sweet pies like cheesecake and cream pies.

  25. Hershey says:

    Misprepared fish week!
    xD
Took me a couple of days, But I think I got it. x]
Hmph, now I’m hungry for pot pie in the middle of Summer. And I’m a vegiterain. .-.

  26. Elle says:

I’m eating a chicken pot pie as I read this, whoa. That’s deep.

  27. Micah says:

    Eww…I hate pot pies.

  28. Space Butler says:

    @Mophtran
Buckethead is a solo artist and one of my three favorite guitarists.

Yesterday’s title was (Elvis) Presley. Am I noticing a trend?

  29. Vosur says:

That reminds me, I need to siphon ink from my pie.

  30. dartigen says:

Ehh, I’ve avoided pot pies ever since I heard about the chicken pot pie incident on the set of The Matrix.

I like my mum’s homemade pies better. She cuts up the meat and veggies in big chunks, so it’s nice. Most of our meat pies are horrid, but there’s a few good bakeries that make nice ones.

  31. -2! says:

I have had chicken pot pie actually made in a pot, so thats where the name is from

Also, Chris, The Book of Biff is somewhere in my top one of the 20 web comics I read. It is the first page science I started using the Internet to dethrone google as my homepage (note that is from when i actually got my own homepage)

Please disregard if this comment shows up twice as my Internet went down just as i was submitting it

  32. Unoriginality says:

“Potpie….A crusted pie made with poultry or meat, and, usually chopped vegetables. The term, which first appeared in American print in 1785, probably refers to the deep pie pans or pots used to bake pies in, and it has remained primarily an Americanism. The most popular pot pies have been chicken, Beef, and pork. The first frozen pot pie was made with chicken in 1951 by the C. A. Swanson Company.”
—Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink, John F. Mariani [Lebhar-Friedman:New York] 1999 (p. 254)

    To answer your question, Chris.

  33. Kari says:

Pot pies were not made OF pot, but rather IN one. It was a stew made in a pot with bread on top. That is how they started. 🙂 Tho…. My friend once DID make a chicken pot pot pie… it was a little special lol

  34. baughbe says:

After midnight…. still waiting…. Notice title musician, seafood related to musician for at least two. Barnes and Barnes Fishhead song. Elvis Presley and clams from his beach movies. Don’t know about the other two. What does Kingsley have to do with shrimp, or Buckethead with squid? Too tired…. Too lazy….. not enough whatever to Google……

  35. Grug says:

Chicken pot pie is really just cream chicken stew with pastry on top. It’s served inside a pot used to cook the stew. I like meat-pies, but I dislike dessert pies. Weird.

  36. Jeff says:

lol, first time I’ve seen Buckethead’s name used outside the site or GHII

  37. White667 says:

In the UK, if you order a pot pie in a Pub or something, I’ll usually still actually come in a pot.

  38. YukiSnowflake says:

    @AdmiralHippyvoxel – top 5? TOP FIVE?!
It shouild be THE TOP, COS IT IS!!!
(*btw, chris, i’m thinking about buying something, but i’m not sure what i’ll get yet. now, if there was a biff PLUSHIE, i would buy that.*)
(*not that you have to make one if you don’t want to, which you prob. won’t)

  39. BrainpanSonata says:

I love pot pies, but those paper tins always stick to the food… so before I pop it in the icrowave, I pop it out of the tin and grease the tin with cooking spray. Works approximately 95% percent of the time and makes the crust golden brown 100% of the time.
