I’ve switched almost all of the bulbs in my house to compact fluorescents. The ones in my bathroom take about 60 seconds to come to full brightness. I kind of like that. When I wake up in the morning it’s not such a shocking bright light. Then it slowly comes up to full brightness as if it’s the sun peeking out from behind a cloud.

My Dad just put those in most of the sockets in our house, and it is kind of annoying when you want to run down the basement stairs, but have to wait for the lights to turn on so you don’t trip over anything. But, saving energy and money is worth waiting 5 seconds I guess.
OOH! What fertilizer does he use on his bulbs? I’ve been trying so hard to get mine that tall, but they just don’t get much bigger than desk lamps.
You know what? I’ll bet those are the new incandescent-fluorescent hybrids they were talking about! I’ve heard they’re much more drought-resistant, but I never liked the colors they come in…
Wow… 30 second on times? You guys must have the OLD energy saving bulbs. The new ones come on instantly!
Anyway. Nothing light a bit of “light” gardening.

I have no idea how long ours take to come on. Aside from my room, which is a disaster area, I generally know where stuff is well enough to move around in the dark.
energy saving is good, but this story makes me slightly nervous of those things. personally i would like to see some LED based alternatives.

Who needs light bulbs when we have candles…wait…( backround chatter ), well people, I guess the candles are actually light bulbs. -_-
Well, I was going to ask what’s those piece of yellow growth at the base of the plant’s is it some kind of reference to electricity? That also brings up the question of what did he feed them with to get them to grow?

Mind you, if I could, I’d grow lamps too. If you plant a coloured bulb, do you get a coloured lamp?

It never ceases to amaze me how you get so much emmotion into that stylized face, Chris. Look at how happy biff is; the satisfaction in his lamp plants. I wonder, do you have to plug these lamps in? or are they solar powered like real plants?

J, there are LED lightbulbs that will screw into existing sockets. They’re fairly expensive though, but considering the estimated lifetime of an LED is 100 000 hours or more (the equivalent of over 11 YEARS, and that’s leaving it on every hour of every day of every year), the cost is probably well worth it. And they’ll most likely get cheaper as time goes by.

yea, ‘Logic’ is right, they do have mercury in them. My dad had started switching everything to flourescent since christmas, but when he found out they had mercury he immediatly wanted to switch back. yes, we did save money on electricity, but their disposal and health costs from broken ones probably just aren’t worth it. PLus i thought society was trying to move away from mercury things since they’ve screwed up the environment so much.
evryone keeps talking about those LED alternatives coming out, and frankly i like that idea. another thing about mercury lights, my state (connecticut) is thinking about making them required in every household. this is in order to make sure that everyone saves energy, but the environment here is already screwed up enough by mercury. If that rule goes through, you’ll see a flood of people movin out of CT, including me.
Then wright to your legislators and senators. They’re there for a reason, you know.
Looks like Biff is on his way to take the lighting market by storm. I know I’ll buy from him.
when my grandma judy plants bulbs, all she gets is tulips! 🙂
We have also switched to flourescent, but the bulb I have in my lamp is instantly bright, and gets a little brighter after it’s turned on for a while. I made the mistake of looking directly at it while turning it on the first time.

Given the way Biff turns off Lamps, I hope he is growing lots of them.
What’s the big deal about mercury? It’s a liquid. Unless you intend to lick the area that your light broke in, there shouldn’t be much of an issue.
That being said, I, like most Texans, don’t support environmental portection. We’re wasteful and proud! Incandescent bulbs forever!
