#1647 – Crackle

A few time a year I wind up being scared of garbage. A faint crunching or popping sound will sneak up on me from another room. I’ll arm myself and creep up on the source expecting a rabid squirrel or weasel to be lurking around the corner. “Oh yeah. I tossed this empty potato chip bag in here an hour ago.”

  1. I’m easily startled by noises when I’m trying to sleep, but I don’t get afraid that something might have entered the apartment. I just keep hoping that none of the cats are in my room, because I sleep with the door to my room closed, and I don’t want the cats to jump around in my bed and step on me when I’m trying to sleep.

Any noise will sound like a cat when I’m trying to sleep, and I will think that one of my cats is hiding under my bed, waiting to start scratching at the door to get out from my room just as I’m about to fall asleep.

Pop bottles, if you flatten them before you throw them away, sometimes will make loud, scary popping noises trying to get back some kind of shape if you don’t tighten the cap all the way. And at 3:00 in the morning, when you’re getting a glass of milk, with lights out but the frdge, is when you find that out.

meanwhile, that one ad with the big blinking anime-style eyes, is kinda disturbing. And I like anime.

Try a dented soda bottle popping back into shape.

    hard to argue that one…

I’m always listening to everything around me (years of multiplayer shooter video games will do that to you) so every creak pop and groan my house makes, even the noises outside, make me wonder whats going on.

This reminds me of a story an online acquaintance told –

She was cleaning out her fridge and found a jar of chutney that had gone bad (she claimed it was “trying to crawl out of the jar), so she closed the lid and threw it in the trash, followed by a bad cantaloupe. A few minutes later, while back online, she said she heard a weird noise from the kitchen…

The jar of chutney had exploded and launched the cantaloupe out of the trash can and onto the floor.

Ah, the old “Chutney-Cantalope-Catapult Trick”, eh?

Probably worth rinsing contents down the drain, rather than have it be a UXB for (random-time) later, eh? If it’s a jar I could fill with candle wax and wick for a power-outage (leaving enough room for a pack of matches in the top) I’ll even soak and wash it.
