#1571 – Droplet

My wife has used various different sound machines to help her get to sleep. My favorite was a generic “rain” white noise maker. Lately she likes to use an app on her phone that uses real recordings of rain. This one drives me nuts. Even though the loops are long and well edited I can still hear the repeating pattern.

I was a submariner in the navy. Dripping water is something you definitely have to get used to. Its rushing water noises that you have to worry about.

    Mickey, subs leak?

    1. I was thinking the same thing about dripping water in a submarine when I read the caption. I would still get worried, that’s for sure!

Yeah they leak, but it isn’t really much of a concern. It is a lot easier to just install systems to pump the little bit of water back overboard rather then try to make every opening to the outside completely water tight.

  3. I can fall asleep when it rains for real, but I don’t know if I would be able to fall asleep if I was listening to a white noise maker. How loud or silent are they anyway, and does it sound like the white noise obviously comes from inside the room?

Hahaha, I just figured out that I actually do have a white noise maker! Not as in “white noise”, but a white something that is a terrible noisemaker! It’s my dog! …OK, that was lame, I know…

And why does Biff have a picture of a toaster on the wall?

    1. Wait…Figi? A toaster on the wall?

Are those Red Dwarf references I see before me?

I pretty much solved the “repeat” problem by getting 2 sound machines — one has a 20 second loop and the other has a 15 second loop — and running them at the same time.

    1. das-g says:

If the loops are exactly 20 and exactly 15 seconds, respectively, the added-up noise will repeat in loops of 60 seconds. Get noise devices whose loop have durations with a ratio of prime numbers to get much longer loops. (E.g. 19 and 13 second loops together would give you added-up loops of 247 seconds.) Better, yet, with loop durations that cannot be related to each other by integers, (i.e., the ratio between them is “irrational”), you’ll get no loops at all!

Is that a Savage Chickens sticky note on the wall?

also the first thing that got my eyes, gotta love doug and his chicken 🙂

      Nice! Love the cameo! 🙂

I sometimes use http://www.rainymood.com/ to screen out street noise, but the combination just ends up sounding like it’s raining garbage trucks.

I have a cheap mp3 player with some of those old recordings from the book-and-record days. Two Star Trek ones, “Passage To Mouav” and “Crier In Emptiness”, some TransFormers ones. Plus, Mercury Theater’s “War Of The Worlds.” Amazing how well those work.

It’s kind of funny to see the Savage Chickens cartoon on his wall, because for a while (and right now) I’ve been reading through both of those archives at the same time. Let one page load while I read the other.
