I think the most hilarious sunglasses I ever got were handed to me after getting my eyes dilated at the eye doctor. They gave me a small plastic tube that unrolled into a cartoony 1980’s future pair of sunglasses that conformed to my face. I don’t understand why these weren’t a fashion statement from back then.

I don’t know if these count as sunglasses, but I recently got a pair of steampunk-goggles that work like sunglasses. Now, I’m not the type of person who wears sunglasses while indoors, but when I tried them out (indoors anyway, because I never go outdoors) I almost couldn’t see a thing! I guess I maybe could wear them like sunglasses while outdoors, but I think the sun would have to shine a whole lot if I want to be able to see anything at all… Also, I don’t think I would look that cool at all to most people, but that’s just a matter of opinion…

Perfect Sunglasses for the indoor type, I’ve got the same lenses, in bright sunlight, everything has a dark green hue. When they say welding goggles, they mean Spot welding, Arc Welding would still make you go blind.
I tried image-searching “spot welding goggles”, and some of them were quite similar to my goggles. This is what my goggles look like, in case anyone wants to see (except that the plastic areas are red, and not black):

Sounds like the lens’s in the goggles you have are something similar to a shade 5, commonly used for Oxy-fuel welding and cutting.
We get the flat plastic strip with the cardboard earpieces. Ma had a pair of reallllllly dark shades just for eye exams.
To properly be SteamPunk, shouldn’t the goggles have a light detector that controls motors to turn the crossed Polaroid filters, so they’re like a Rube Goldberg version of modern PhotoGray lenses?
