#1131 – Lucidity

I wish I was better at lucid dreaming. It rarely happens for me but when it does the whole “Oh hey this is a dream!” excitement usually takes me out of it. Then I have to go about my day with the constant reminder that humans don’t live in vast underwater cities.

I frequently have the “oh, this is a dream” realization, but if I ever try to control the dream it fights back. For example, one time I had a dream that one of my teeth was loose, a common dream actually, usually the tooth just falls out like a baby tooth then I wake up and everything’s fine, but this time I thought to myself that I shouldn’t wiggle it because I didn’t want it to fall out, so dream me stopped wiggling the tooth. The next night, the same tooth was loose and when it fell out I felt pain and tasted blood and those sensations lingered slightly after I woke up.

This sort of thing happens every time I change the course of my dreams. It’s like my subconscious mind gets angry at me for not doing what it wants me to do and decides to punish me.

So much for an ‘elemental’ week… :p

I don’t really do lucid dreams, but I do have dreams that are so surreal I’m aware in the dream that things are more weird than usual.

Looks like Biff needs a Purple Crayon.

  4. Crimson_regret says:

I’m going to go ahead and say theft week.

Yesterday biff’s gold fillings were at risk of being stolen, and now biff’s dreams!

  5. The Dukenator says:

@i.half4 Is that book? Somehow I recall reading that.

@Chris Utopia? Should try BioShock as its set in Rapture, an underwater city.

  6. Baughbe says:

Not good at lucid dreaming myself. Most of my dreams center on houses and buildings with odd passageways or hidden rooms. Although once I did dream of living in a dome on the Moon. For some strange reason the bathroom was an outhouse in a separate dome outside the city dome.

@Dukenator: Harold and the Purple Crayon
When I do have lucid dreams, I can rarely do what I want. Teleportation never works, and flying rarely does, though I can sometimes rewind time to correct a mistake. I guess I’m too close to awake and don’t believe myself that these things could happen, or something :

I’ve found Biff to be entertaining for a very long time. I love the art and concepts, and the imaginative ways in which Biff is put through the wringer are a delight to see.

Yet today, of all days, on the simplest Biff page I can remember ever seeing, I laughed hard enough that I actually couldn’t breathe for a moment. I think it’s just Biff’s ‘Oh not this crap again’ pose.

  9. Chris says:

Thanks Raiser, I try to have him speak mainly through body language. 🙂

  10. Kustin says:

I just love lucid dreams, whether they’re good or bad. It gives me a solid reason to know that the world you’re awake in isn’t all there is for you to see, not to mention sleep gets coated with something, be it sugar or salt.

And yes, I also wish I knew how to lucid dream more often. Can’t be the fighter/adventurer in familiar places every night, can I…?

  11. Cari says:

I lucid dream all the time, and I wish I didn’t. They’re usually frustrating or otherwise unpleasant, and I can’t control them. Like the other night, when I dreamed I had to take some god-awful math test. The whole time I struggled with the math, I was worried about a heat exhausted dog I’d left and couldn’t get back to.

  12. DtLe says:

I’ve had a “this is a dream” experience twice. Both times I actually said that out loud, gave a statement of why I know it’s a dream, and had the dream end about a minute later. So weird.

  13. Vannah says:

I’ve been a lucid dreamer (by effort, not natural ability) for almost 2 years, but now being in high school and having to wake up at 5 am is killing that. But I’m glad you know about lucid dreaming. So few people do, even though they’re really amazing once you get the hang of it.

  14. tailman says:

theft week then. i was really looking forward to PoE week though.

  15. Daniel says:

I have very weird lucid dreams where I’m in school and forgot all my homework, or all the material for a math test or something, then I wake up and go into a half dream state and I’m like wait I’m not going to school for real, and I fall back to sleep and the dream suddenly changes.

  16. Wizard says:

I only rarely manage a lucid dream, but I have gotten fairly good at willing myself awake to get out of a really unpleasant dream. I’m just glad I don’t experience sleep paralysis much any more; that was no fun at all. Although just a couple of days ago, I did dream I was suffering from sleep paralysis. Lots of odd things go on in my head, but that was a new level of weirdness even for me.

  17. Toafan says:

    maybe it’s dream week?
of course, it’s to soon to tell still. the only way to know for sure is see the rest of the weeks’ comics…
    [‘borrows’ time machine]
    (I’ll bring it back, promise!)

  18. warrior assassin says:

whenever I realize my dream is a dream I tend too reverse if frequently and change certain things or do something different and see how they play out that way.

  19. Mister Disco says:

I’m one of those people with a dream repertoire. I have Lucid, pre-cog (seeing the future) and Sleep walking all each at least once a month. I think my most memorable Lucid dream was when I heard my alarm clock go off, and a patch of blackness appeared with my alarm clock in it, and I reached out, turned off the alarm, and the patch faded away. About five minutes later I realized that it was my real alarm that I’d really turned off, and woke up.

  20. DDR says:

Oooohh, for me the worst is when someone comes in and wakes me from a lucid dream. I think lucid dreaming is as close as one can get to being a god. It’s FUN! 😀

  21. Vannah says:

    @DDR
    Heck yah!

  22. Momorikku says:

I’ve had a couple rather freaky lucid dreams before. (sorta) I’ve realized that I was dreaming, so my subconcious tries to convince me that, “no, you’re not! this is real, silly!” by adding freakishly real sensations to my dream. The one that still freaks me out to this day was one where I had wings… and I could feel them. That. Was. Freaky.

  23. common comic reader says:

    well… darn

  24. Radical Edward says:

Dreams for me are impossible. Mainly the medicine I take has the side effect of nightmares that are filled with Confirmed results from Mythbusters. (i.e. if it actually did happen in the story, it happens in my nightmares.)
