#1008 – Coop

It’s funny how I don’t remember reading comics or novels under the blanket with a flashlight when I was a kid. What I do remember was being younger and reading Doctor Seuss and Shel Silverstein books. I never got in trouble for it. Our house has creaky floors so I always had plenty of warning that someone was coming. I wonder what my mom’s reaction would have been.

Weeeeird, I just quoted Silverstein on a forum today.

  2. ZachSkunk says:

You would have gotten in trouble for reading Shel Silverstein or Dr. Seuss? I’m pretty sure you mean that you’d get in trouble for reading by flashlight after bed time; might wanna mention that for posterity.

    Shel’s work is awesome.
    Dr. Seuss wrote propaganda.

I hope Biff isn’t mailing himself to some girl. Hasn’t he heard “The Gift” by the Velvet Underground? Yikes!

  5. Yet another excellent comic.

And I have gotten in trouble for reading after lights out. It’s nothing to write home about.

oh no! im caught up 🙁 i love ur comic. can’t wait for the next one :))

Oh dear, I hope Biff did NOT put Fragile on the outside of that box. Otherwise he’s in for a world of hurt.

  8. Chris says:

@ZachSkunk – Yep you got it.

@figgyleaf – It had to happen sooner or later!

I had creaky floorboards too, but my parents would check to see if I had anything under my sheets, so I’d put the book under my bed. One time the floorboards didn’t creak, and I didn’t know my mom was coming until she started to open the door. I ended up shoving the book down my pants, beacause my mom would’ve seen me move my arm. (My bed was agaist the wall)

PTTG; Propaganda is not automatically bad. Like any other use of power, it accquires the karma of the user.

Suess rocked. Unca’ Shel rocked, too.

My parents required half an hour of reading every night before we went to bed when I was young. I was reading at a sixth grade level by the second grade.

Of course, this lead me to read much longer past my bedtime in later years when I got really into the books I read.

  12. SudoBlagon says:

If you were reading Shel Silverstein’s Different Dances, i think your mother would have been more upset

  13. PTTG says:

I never said Suess was bad, I just said he made propoganda. I heard he later really changed his mind about it, but it’s weird to see suessish drawings talking about how terrible the “Japs” are.

  14. Yeesh, mailing yourself to someone is really creepy. My life is odd. I go for three years without getting so much as a phone number from a girl, then just yesterday, met up with some chick at college, and we are going out on a date today. that night i go to Wal-Mart and find out a good friend gave her fiance back her ring. Now i got to figure out a way to go on both dates today without looking like a douche. It sucks. I like both, but i know how wonky women get when you are seeing someone else, too. stupid karma. and i know i will probably pick just one by the end of the week, but with my luck, it’ll be the wrong one. I wonder if the mailing thing will work then?

I had a watch with a glow button. I had to hold it right up to the words but I managed.

  16. Cari says:

My bedside lamp had a nightlight built into the base, so I would put my book on the nightstand to read it. I kept the door open slightly for the cat, so I could hear my parents coming, altho they rarely checked on me.

when i was younger i used to play my gameboy advance under the covers. for those of you that don’t know, the advance has no backnight, so it’s impossible to see without a light source. i had a microscope with a loght on the bottom. i used that. hey, it worked 🙂

Reading when you don’t have to? I would never do that, I hated reading. And I have insomnia to so its not like I would fall asleep fast.

  19. Lurch says:

I’ve been reading in bed for more than 40 years. My wife and I encouraged our sons to read in bed. Even now that they are in their late teens, the threat of curtailing access to books is more than enough to produce excellent behaviour.

Reading for pleasure is FAR better than watching TV or playing some stuipid video game.

  20. Ameil159 says:

Wow Biff really does get around. 🙂

biff doesnt sleep…he just waits…*yes i know this is a chuck norris joke used often*
