#233 – Gloves

My first job (not including the paper route) involved lots of cardboard boxes. I worked at a lighting store with a large showroom. We could only store about 25% of the empty boxes for them in the basement. Part of my job was organizing the boxes and when some one would purchase a fixture from the showroom I would have to bring up a box and pack it up. I developed the skill of being able to look at a fixture and hold the volume of it in my head while I went down stairs to find a box that was only slightly larger than the object. Unfortunately I never needed this skill at any of my future jobs.

All that weight training for nothing.

  2. Corey says:

    D’oh. No pun intended, I’m sure. 🙂

  3. Kuroiten says:

And he was ready for the heavyweight circuit too…

  4. Postman says:

I work in a boxing room in a turkey plant and it’s funny when people ask what I do and I simply say ‘boxing.’ Hey, I’m not wrong in saying that, it’s their fault for thinking the wrong occupation!

  5. Jokuki says:

i guess he was thinking he was going to package meat XD….yes i know i suck at puns/jokes

  6. Reikon Ame says:

Wasn’t that skill sort of helpful with moving?

  7. Steven says:

So will he be boxing boxes?

  8. Konola says:

I agree with Reikon Ame, My family has that skill from moving alot. It’s a more usfull skill then you would think. And now we know, Biff konws how to box. But he’ll need to wait till next time.

  9. GreyDuck says:

Postman: My father used to work in the printing (press) industry (this is back before everything went digital) and delighted in telling people he was a professional stripper.

I don’t know where I get my sense of humor…

  10. Reikon Ame says:

See what I mean, there are actually a good bit of places you could use that skill. I mean what if for some strange reason a millionare (sp) comes up to you and challenge to box fast. There you go that skill is in the bag and boom you get the bet won and the prize earned.+

  11. kenshin620 says:

Biff still has his shirt on, don’t most boxers go bare chested?

…though maybe he’s just hiding how musculer he is underneath. XP

  12. Gobbledegook says:

If he got good at boxing packages with those gloves on, he’d be a sight to behold.

  13. DMC_Run says:

    [Konola]:
I gotta disagree with you, because one look at his stance & arm-placement tells me that Biff knows NOTHING about “pugilism”.

  14. C.B. says:

This comic made me pause, then I laughed quite hard. Once again, great comic, Chris! But I wonder, just what is in those boxes? Looks like packing material, I guess…

  15. Yuccadude says:

So you’re telling me there’s no fighting on Boxing Day? Canada just got a little tamer to me…

  16. Jezwazza says:

Yeah I work with boxes….mostly they’re full of stuff at the time, although its pretty fun to have cardboard-armour-fights, or just throw boxes at each other… when they’re empty, of course! Those cardboard corners though, they hurt…

  17. Propane13 says:

    Love the comic.

I myself do fencing for a living.

  18. dragonbrad says:

so is that his high paying job ,or did he get fired from his old one because he was continuilsy hittying people with his frozen sandwich tounge flail.

    aparently this is before
http://www.thebookofbiff.com/2007/03/22/208-moving/ because he seems to know hox to box now

  19. S. Allen says:

man, I worked on an assembly line packaging tools in a forge for my first job. Breaking down boxes when orders got slow was the worst job. Less mindnumbing then shoving tools into plastic boxes or assembling gear pullers, but you had to really rush to keep up.

  20. Psychosis says:

    LOL material.

  21. P. Speed says:

    Former occupation: Tuxedo salesmen

Downside: Dead-boring other than the one month of prom season.

Upside: Free tuxedo usage (I was the same size as the manequins.)

Job skills learned: minor sewing, 10-key adding machine entry, telling someone’s size just by looking at them (popular during the holidays)

Non-job skills learned: twirling a cane, flipping a top hat, throwing hangers onto the rack from several paces.

Highlights: one season my coworker and I played chess so many times we had to start making up new rules.

  22. Steven says:

Could the boxes contain packing styrofoam? You know, to protect it?

  23. Konola says:

    [DMC_Run]:
The arm placement and stance could have gotten that way when he realized what the job really was.

  24. monoXcide says:

I can relate to this comic. The way I take it is that you will sometimes come to a sad realization of what the job really is compared to what you thought it would be.

  25. Radical Edward says:

I made it to top athlete at my high school, although boxing is not part of the curriculum since the district thinks it would make the students violent. I won 1st place in a recent boxing match, though.

  26. Rachel says:

    *starts laughing*

  27. Darkpheonix XIII says:

Biff: *getting psyched* Alright, let’s do this!
*conveyer belt whirrs to life, box comes out of hole in wall*
Biff: *stares* *thinks: Oh…* *punches box* I win!

  28. Elkian says:

    the mistake there, Darkphoenix? ‘Thinks’.

  29. Bug says:

I used to work at a book store, and the books came packaged in boxes. My Manager decided it was an ingeniously good idea to place all these boxes into the fire escape route behind the store, just in case we needed the boxes again for some reason.

Of course, she didn’t want to go down in a raging inferno, so, she placed all the boxes and spare display stands outside the fire escape door for the neighbouring store. My coworker and I hated the manager, so we decided to call in the fire department for a “surprise inspection” and hopefully get her fired.

Unfortunately our Fire Department sucks, and they never arrived.

  30. jykcor says:

you keep saying “my first job (not counting the paper route)”
how many first jobs can you have?

  31. the walrus says:

In Soviet Russia Box box you!

  32. Couso says:

kind of reminds me of an improv skit I did once. The game was world’s worst where we act out random bad situations for a random topic, and the topic was “worlds worst Stalker” and most of the skits the other people did were pretty lame, but I went and did “Stocker” instead.
