Had a job in college where the only part of the dress code they were strict about was that you had to wear real leather shoes. “But I took this job because I can’t afford shoes like that!” I found out later it was so if you dropped one of the knives in the kitchen it would possibly not stab your foot.

His shoes weren’t acid resistant, but his feet are?! …I wonder if his eyebrows are acid resistant…
I’d be safe, though technically none of my footwear is ‘shoes’. Leather boots are fine, right? Just don’t get underfoot.
My Diabetic doctor told me if I can’t get the special shoes, I’d better invest in steel-toed hikers, just as long as my feet get outer protection.
