#1586 – Whisper

I wonder how differently we would treat our devices if they were aware of their surroundings. I certainly talk to many of them already. Unfortunately it’s limited to things like “Come on!” or “Are you kidding me?'” It would be nice to add “Thank you.” into the mix a few times.

  1. This must be the first time there is a speech bubble in the comic!

Also, I talk to some of my electronic devices (mostly the computer) in the same way as in the description above. I talk to my videogames sometimes too (mostly my Pokemon games), but that’s not because I get annoyed at them. It’s more like “What should I name this one?” or “What should I do now?”

I have found, in my many years of install, maintain and repair on various electronic systems and products that much stronger language is needed in order to bring about compliance from the, while not independently intelligent, most certainly demon possessed equipment. And a 3 lb. sledge hammer has come in handy once or twice (true, no joke).

Is’t this a first since that one Apil fools day comic? A word bubble?
    That seems like a first.

I normally have a good relationship with machines. I trust them, they trust me.

Wow, first time I see a speech balloon in TBOB ever.

Now that’d be one hell of an alarm clock: Link’s annoying fairy friend we all know. Now with escape mechanism and really working wings!

[also, since it is THAT effective, the repair rates can be as low as ten bucks each time you break it]

On the other hand, I for one look forward to a glorious future where threatening computers actually produces a marked improvement in performance.

    “Dialogue” tag?

I also wish to comment. Speech Bubbles? Man, Biff had gone for so long without using them (aside from an april fools joke, of course). Does this mean the comic is now a joke? Have sharks been jumped? I want some answers, Chris.

  10. Fox laughs at me because when I bump into furniture I say “Excuse me.”

I also sing songs to my objects. But I sing little songs to everything and everyone, so that hardly counts.

    like wheatley, for example.

I have had frequent success with just passing hands over a malfunctioning board, and perhaps threatening it with an oscilloscope or meter probe if it remains recalcitrant.

Artificial intelligence is getting nearer, but it will take a long while to outstrip the head start of natural stupidity! (The only substance in our Universe more abundant than Hydrogen!)
