#506 – Reach

We didn’t have a fence around our backyard when I was a kid. On days with nice weather we would let the dog hang out back there. His collar was attached to a line that went to a metal loop in the middle of the yard. This gave him about a 100′ wide circle to romp around in. He understood where this invisible circle was. If you were out playing fetch with him he would stop at the edge when you threw the ball too far. But for some reason, squirrels gave him temporary amnesia. If a squirrel ran through his play area he would chase after it full speed right to the limit of his leash which would then flip him onto his back as the squirrel scampered up a tree and out of sight.

Ahh, the times before wireless. How I remember those cords getting all tangled up…those were the days. Biff clearly hasn’t upgraded recently, lol.

  2. I know how that goes… sorta.

I was playing with a friend, and I threw a tennis ball into his throat (I wasn’t aiming) and he started chasing me. While trying to keep an eye on the tennis ball he was going to return to me with force, I completely forgot about all the construction in his yard, and coincidentally, the line running around his yard to keep people out.

I ended getting caught in the neck by the line. I did a backflip and landed on my belly. I had a scab for weeks…

  3. Oooh, phones!

In regards to Ryan: Cordless phones can be a pain. I know that my parents house is terrible for them. I don’t know if it is the ones they buy, or if we are just in a terrible place for interference, but they just don’t work well, and while I think they have one, they use corded phones much more frequently.

In regards to Kyle: We were playing some capture the flag one night in a large park with some friends, probably about 7 years or so ago. One friend was running and got clotheslined by a volleyball net she didn’t see. She actually had a grid marks on her face (no blood, and thus no scabs, but some pretty nice marks that probably lasted for a few days).

hey maybe biff could make use of those designer phone bugs… of course, it might take a little genetic engineering, but still.

  5. Carpaccio says:

ah yes, I always have that trouble with cables and cords and the like. I think I’m just accident prone around them.

  6. Fred says:

@Kyle: In WWII, a German technique was to hang a tight, thin wire between two posts or trees crossing a street or open space. When an American Jeep came whirling past… 2-3 heads rolled over, or at least the soldiers were left severely wounded….

    Phone week.

I don’t use corded phones all that much, but I do keep accidentally unplugging my keyboard – I type with my keeyb oard in my lap, and if I swivel my chair too far or fast… Pop! Out comes the plug!

  8. Spaceman Spiff says:

One of my friends was playing tag or something in a friend’s yard when I was in high school, during the night. He ran straight into their barbed wire fence, and still has scars on his chest.

  9. Jackson says:

It’s easy to get caught up in the heat of the chase and forget important details. As the experiences of both Biff and your dog can attest.

I find it amusing to imagine the phone conversation Biff must have been having. “So after I collected all the tennis balls I still needed to drain the basement, so–oh man, it’s the ice cream truck! This is so great, I’m gonna get myself some ice cream! Dude, what flavor should I get? I’m thinking maybe a HLAUGHGH” whump

Of course, we never hear Biff speak, so one can only speculate…

  10. Parker says:

    @Jackson

    XD That was brilliant.

  11. PsychoDuck says:

But who could Biff have been talking too? He seems to be the only person in his world… Or maybe people just keep far, far away from him. The ice cream man was obviously fleeing during Biff’s pursuit.

    The Duck Has Spoken.

  12. Gobbledegook says:

@Jackson: Hmmm… you got me thinking *ouch*. Is there any proof Biff even speaks English? I don’t recall any strips that have written words, not counting captions of course. Granted, I may have simply not noticed at the time…

  13. kenshin620 says:

cordless phones are great…except when you forget to recharge them and then you can’t find them until your turn whole rooms upside down.

  14. Gobbledegook says:

Nebbermind… Strip #29 proved me wrong already. Hehe… sugar shock…

  15. Seraphine says:

    Isn’t there a saying that
    silence speaks volumes?
Or that the ice cream will
come to he who is patient.

  16. MOD says:

    phone week?

lol GREAT comic today, Chris. My dog would do the same thing but we have a fence. I’ve never seen her ram into it though.

  18. When I was a kid and in after-school daycare, there was another kid that I would constantly harass. At one point, I ended up chasing him through the daycare play area. He sped around a corner, and I followed. He jumped over the seesaws, and I did, too. He ran through the gate, as did I. He shut the gate, and I didn’t notice. I remember laying on the ground, bleeding and laughing.

  19. Bubble says:

Hah, imagine talking to Biff on the phone and then he runs off after the ice cream truck while still talking to you..

I wonder what Biff sounds like when he talks?

    Omigosh imagine a Biff CARTOON!

Sorry, that was a total spaz on my part. But I do like the Biff cartoon idea *hint hint*

  20. Foxfire says:

hah, I remember during a scout outing, we’d decided to roast fomr marshmallows. The place where we were camping had a cable (not wires, cables) fence around the place. Well, I went back to the car to grab an old hanger I was gonna use to roast my mallow, and since it was a full moon, I didn’t bring a flashlight. Well, I started running back, and promptly wondered why my feet were out in front of me and why I was doubling over….then I landed on my ass. Ran smack into the fence and full speed.

  21. Jykcor says:

    I’ve done this before….
    with my cell phone.
Really, it was charging, and I was talking.

  22. YukiSnowflake says:

Thanks to whoever put the link to http://www.thebookofbiff.com/2006/01/27/phone/, I now notice that you draw better!
