#1865 – Ding

Whenever I feed my dog I first ask her “Hungry?” If she’s on the floor she then jumps for joy at the thought of imminent food. If I pick her up first the word causes her to continuously lick her chops and repeatedly swallow all the extra saliva.

  1. My dog has a quite unusual “pavlov thing”. Instead of all these food/drooling stuff, it’s about the computer and the TV… Whenever he hears the “Putt!” sound of the computer shutting down, he gets up to go to the TV instead… Or am I really just that predictable?

My cats have this Pavlov effect down. When they were kittens, every time my wife opened a catfood can, they would purr and bounce and wind around her feet.

Now they purr, and bounce and wind around her feet a little earlier each day. Their breakfast is at 4am currently. (Not actually kidding about that.)

You think Pavlov ever started to drool along with the dogs after a while?

The key to more intelligence and better habits is using Pavlov methods on one-self. When I need to change/gain a habit, or learn something new on demand, I reward myself with a candy to stimulate my inner animal to cooperate. =)

And if I need to get rid of a bad habit, I first think of a (relatively) innocuous/harmless habit to _replace_ the bad one. But a little good old behavior mod with it couldn’t hurt (unless the old habit _is_ the candy!)
