#1809 – Popping

There are some books that I had as a kid where I don’t really remember the contents. I see the cover and get a warm rush of nostalgia. “Hey, let’s read this one!” I say to my son, but then two pages in I start skipping words and awkwardly making up my own story to go with the pictures. “…and then the rooster takes the knife and… Oh look at this other book over here about bunnies! Let’s read that one instead!”

  1. The books that I had as a child were actually quite child-friendly (or at least the ones that I still remember). Maybe Swedish books for children are less violent and such? If you’d translate them to English, you would get things like “Totte builds things” and “Emma goes to the dentist” and such.

It was quite fun to read a book for my dog, he seemed to be very interested in it…

I hope the “book over here about bunnies” isn’t Watership Down. Talk about a very violent book to read (let alone cartoon movie). I bought the movie for my niece and nephew when they were 8 and 10 years old and my brother was angry with having to deal with the nightmares they had after watching the first part of it.

Thanks to the original “The Electric Company” I learned to read when I was three, so my parents just let me read whatever I could handle. I recommend such tales as “The Big Orange Splot”, “On Beyond Zebra”, “Arrow To The Sun”, and if you haven’t gotten it for yourself yet, “Go The F*** To Sleep”, a real children’s book just for the parents.

Go the F*** to sleep is the only book I’ve ever heard of that’s even better in audiobook form.

It’s read by Samuel L Jackson.

I’m reminded of The Coward’s Pop-Up Book of Slobberin’ Monsters, from the British cartoon Danger Mouse…..

I remember once I woke up feeling very warm in the summer, turns out in my sleep I had put my trousers on, and remade my bed with my blankets upside down, comforter first than sheet on top of it… no joke
