#1547 – Weighted

When I first went to college I had to do grocery shopping while using public transportation. I had never done this before so I was not prepared for the reality of walking many blocks while carrying bags full of groceries. I had to keep stopping to take breaks and rest my fingers. Later I would only shop with the little hand held basket to restrict myself to things I could actually carry.

Oh man…this reminds me of the first time stocking up at the grocery store here at college. My two biggest mistakes were not taking my duffle bag and backpack to carry my things and not taking the bus, instead traveling miles with a huge load of unwieldy, bulky grocery bags, cutting into my fingers. It was an agonizing trip; all the breaks I kept having to take made the miles seem like light years. Eventually I had to call a friend for help. The phone call basically went, “Hi, I have terrible planning. I owe you big time. Thanks.”

It’s not a bad idea to always wear a backpack, that way you can fill it up without being weighted down too much, but I know exactly what you mean, there have been several times when I’ve been wandering around town, decided to get groceries, then found myself in trouble when it was time to head home. The most notorious of which was trying to tie 4 gigantic bags of stuff onto my bicycle.

  3. I feel the same as Biff sometimes when I have carried stuff to our new apartment (we’re moving again, hooray!). It doesn’t even have to be for a long while, I still feel like one arm is getting longer than the other one…

I work in a grocery store near a large retirement community.
Get an old lady with a full shopping cart, and she says, “Don’t make the bags too heavy, I’m taking the bus.”
I’m sorry, the order weighs the same whether you have 5 bags or 20. And 5 bags takes up less room on the bus. Or do they expect the bus to wait while they take their groceries off the bus 2 bags at a time?

I have a couple of stores within 5 blocks of home, so if I need to make a quick food run, I walk. The clerks will notice if I’m getting a gallon of milk, or other deceptively heavy items, and ask if I’m walking, and double-bag appropriately.

Weight distribution is an important lesson one learns when carrying groceries home. Especially when you’ve saddled yourself with an amount of bags that ideally require four arms.
