#1528 – Tapped

I have never donated blood. At least I don’t remember donating it. Doctors take it from me all the time but that’s more for some sort of craft project they are working on. A very elaborate project judging by the bills they send me.

I’ve given blood once. All I’ll say is, it was a free high. mostly from losing a pint of the red stuff. 😛

  2. Pyro says:

you see in Canada the doctors don’t send you bills, it’s free, so you can hardly complain if a late frost slows the blood flowing from the taps.

The first time I donated blood when I was 17 I was astounded to find out that my blood type’s Rhesus factor was negative instead of positive like we’d always thought it was. When I went to my parents with the news wanting to know how that could happen (I’d always been told they were both Rhesus positive) my dad floored me when he told me something he’d also just found out….the army had also gotten his Rhesus wrong.

His was also negative instead of positive, so I ended up with a rare blood type and an issue that could have caused both me and him serious damage if we’d ever been in need of transfusions in previous years and we’d recieved blood from the wrong type-especially me, since I can donate to anyone but I can only recieve one type in transfusions.

When I was in college I didn’t weigh enough to give blood. Once I finished, my stress went down enough for me to actually keep some weight on, but driving home after giving blood doesn’t seem like a good idea, given how far I live from the drives I know of.

  5. I have never donated blood either, but they have taken samples samples of my blood for testing. That’s it! So I haven’t got any interesting blood donation stories to tell everyone…

But can it really be good to donate that much blood at one time? But hey, Biff seems to be immortal, so I guess he’ll be fine!

  6. EsquireFox says:

I’ve never actually been given the chance to donate blood. In America, if you’ve lived in a foreign country for a few years or were born there and then moved to the states, you are not allowed to give blood.

  7. MechZombie says:

never given blood, hate needles. when two of my teeth got punched out, i had an iv stuck in my arm, and a needle shoved in my gum(to stop any pain) couldnt eat for a while after that.
I do know, thats a lot of blood, over the time itd take to fill it at that rate, hed be fine…until they remove the tap, which they dont, they just empty the buckets. However, id say about a 1/4 that be one of those blood bags, maybe half

  8. I’ve donated blood a number of times. They love me because I have the second rarest blood type you can have. Rarest blood type is AB negative. I have AB positive. It’s not a big deal for me to donate, because they let you have Oreos and a juice drink afterwards. I’m here for the free cookies!
    Whoo hoo!

  9. Radical Edward says:

I can’t donate blood. I am highly anemic and to lose that much blood would be dangerous for me. However, I have never received blood transfusions.

  10. kingklash says:

I’d be giving blood left and right, but I’m very uncomfortable around needles, and diabetic..

  11. Chrispy says:

I have O+ which is a fairly universal blood type. Every eight weeks the Red Cross begins the phone harassment until I guilt up and give again.

In the end it’s not a big deal, I’m just useless for most of the day afterward, and finding a day to be useless on is pretty challenging with a three year old.

  12. pbarnrob says:

At A school in Memphis, tried to give (well, sell) some O+ on a non-payday weekend, but with a history of heart murmur, they kicked me out. Didn’t keep me out of a commissioning program, though. And it’s time to go leave another sample today for the rheumatologist…

  13. Roborat says:

I give blood every time I am eligible, I am closing in on twenty donations. Of course, I really do it for the free oreos and soft drinks, and sometimes there is pizza.

I gave blood once when I was a senior in high school. I was in a human anatomy and physiology class and our last project of the year was to organize a school blood drive. It was pretty fun; my friends in class and I were assigned to make a promotional ad that was broadcast across the school during morning announcements. It was stupid but funny (in a stupid way) and was fun to make. Plus, by choosing to donate during the drive I got credit in class; By donating blood I got to save lives and get an “A” on the project! Huzzah!

I haven’t given blood since, though. Although I do remember being hassled over the phone by some insistent nuns that wanted me to give blood at another drive. Needless to say, I put those biddies in their place!

  15. balloonpoper says:

I never donated. I just drank it.

    😛

  16. Morzikei says:

I gave blood in November 2010, and was adviced not to donate for a year (messed up eyes)… disregarded than in the spring because they gave free movie (of own choice) tickets for the blood

What I learned is that a hypotensic crisis isn’t fun… felt lifeless for 4 days (but it was worth it)

a pity this year’s spring donation didn’t feature movie tickets

  17. samuel says:

with all the comments on actual blood donation stories, I thought I’d just weigh in and say that this is yet another biff cartoon that will go in the will-haunt-my-dreams file

  18. AbeFM says:

Ha. Somehow, there’s a “bleeding heart” overtone to this comic. 🙂
