I had a Sega Genesis in college and Sonic the Hedgehog games were my favorite. Somehow I didn’t make the connection between the video game character and a real life hedgehog until years later. I really can explain it. Maybe because he was blue?

You’re not the only one.
I didn’t get the opportunity to play Sonic the Hedgehog games until I was maybe 11 years old, when I got a game with several Sonic games in it, for the Gamecube. I knew that Sonic was supposed to be a hedgehog, but I *still* can’t really grasp the idea, because hedgehogs are supposed to be brown, chubby and look generally boring.
I still think of Sonic as just a generic “funny animal”, despite me having known of him since I was maybe 4 years young and saw him on TV. 😛
Good taste in games. To be fair, Sonic really looks nothing at all like a real hedgehog.
I have a Felix the Cat toy sitting on a shelf at home. I had to explain to a nephew once that it wasn’t Sonic. I felt old.
I never had Sonic the Hedgehog games. Because I had a large family, my parents had enough trouble keeping us from fighting over Pokémon: Puzzle League, let along a vibrantly blue hedgehog.

I got into Sonic just enough to realize that he was completely unnecessary to the story.
Tails can FLY, make giant robots, and all sorts of things. And Knuckles is epic in so many ways.
Yet we focus on the blue, snot-nosed little punk who likes chili dogs and can’t swim.
This world just doesn’t make sense sometimes. -_- I’m still for a Tails and Knuckles tag team. Forget Sonic.

i’ve always been a fan of the sonic series (until i discovered portal), and let me just say that sonics’ been going downhill since 2006. he’s pretty much the only reason sega still has any money at all, and apparently they can no longer afford good voice actors. in fact, the voices are the only reason i never bought sonic generations.
