#1388 – Stumble

Back when I was a kid shoes with velcro closures suddenly became popular. I was so jealous of the other kids that got them. It made such a cool sound and they could change their shoes for gym class so quickly! I had to wait for my current shoes to wear out or to be outgrown. I couldn’t just “accidentally” break one of the laces either. Turn out, those are replaceable.

Today’s Maximumble is ready for testing.

I didn’t really ever like the Velcro straps. My feet grew too fast and the Velcro came undone rather easily.

    Staples.

I had a pair of those in the early eighties. I loved them. Then my parents got some and the trend was so over.

My head boots took scarcely longer to tie, though.

Lucky! All we had were styrofoam meat trays tied on with scrap yarn. Our winter boots were hibernating weasels and scotch tape.

Styrofoam? We used to dream of Styrofoam. In them days, we ‘ad shoes made from scrap paper. With the staples still in it. Those were needed, because we had no yarn, no, no.

I knew a guy who used to make boots, shoes and sandals out of old tires, inner-tubes, scrap naugahyde or leather from car-seats, etc. He made good money at it too because they tended to last darn near forever and could be relatively easily repaired if they did break, so he got a lot of good word-of-mouth recommendations and repeat customers.
