Chapter: Comics
Some weeks my schedule gets messed up many days in a row. I build up so much sleep debt that it becomes dangerous to sit down after eating. I’ll suddenly blackout for just a split second but it’s long enough that my short term memory is erased. It will take me a moment before I remember where I am or what I’m doing. “Huh?… Oh yeah… Earth… human… push the computer buttons.”
Today’s Maximumble gets in your eyes.

You not being a college student, to my knowledge, that’s terrifying. O.o
@Azkyroth – What do you mean?
when i was unemployed i was going for up to 72 hours. at one point i went even beyond that and fell deeply asleep once stimulation dropped (in example because of loading a new episode of a series (intro or recap), loading new map in a game, etc).
Was fun time. Mentaly quite in balance, too.
And I found out that I can sleep better when the sun is shining than when I see the moon. Must have something to do with color temperature or something.
When you come back from a split second blackout like that, do you hear a bootup sequence in your head? For me, it’s the old Apple ][c one: BEEP!!! chunka, chunka, chunka!
I’m an architecture student. All night long, all night strong.
Used to be a sailor – SSN stands for “Saturdays, Sundays, and Nights.” As in: “You’ll be awake doing Pre-Crits and stores load all weekend long. First thing Monday, we sail – You have the manevering watch and first underway watch, too.”
>_<
Mask: Ouch.
Despite not even being 18 yet, I too have my experiences with sleep deprivation: I’ve been going to university open days. Which frequently means getting up at 6.30, when I would usually get up at 7, or getting back at something past 1 in the morning. Which, I admit, is not terribly bad.
Way back in my youth, as assistant manager in one store of a well known pizza chain, I spent 3 days without sleep. Combination of double shifts, employees calling in sick at last second, inventory (year end), a work accident after closing, UNPAID mandatory management training class and a manager who showed up once a week to write up the shift schedule and leave. When I finally did get to sleep, I got all of four hours before I had to get up to go back to work. Good times, good times. I named my ulcer after the manager.
Sounds like having a new baby
@baughbe – That does not sound like good times at all.
@EMoN – Been there! (except for the mom part)
This is amazing. I am a college student, this has happened to me more than once and that coffee machine is identical to the one in the college cafeteria. I like “When you are an adult” series
Disturbing that Biff is so tired his brain is not processing the “scalding hot coffee HOT!!!” message.
@ Baughbe and Soilent: Only 72 hours??? Wimps! In art school I stayed up for 96 hours finishing my graphic design projects for the graduation portfolio show.
That pic sums up the life of a med student
@Baughbe: If I didn’t work for the same ‘Well-Known Pizza Chain’ before joining up, then I worked for one of your main competitors. It was good training for becoming a Nuc. 😉
Ugh… I can relate, haven’t slept for about… ooh, 3, 4 days? I can’t even remember what sleep feels like. So… much… homework… revision… tests…. gah…
What makes it worse, I can’t drink coffee. Tea doesn’t work as good as coffee (*apparently*)
