#1198 – Hiss

I consider myself fortunate that I’ve never had a blow out on a bike or car. It’s always a slow leak that shows up the next morning to complicate my day. I managed to pickup 3 nails on the way home from work one day. All in one tire. It was still a slow enough leak that I didn’t notice until I brought the car in for an oil change and tire rotation a week later.

I’ve had more than my share of blowouts, largely due to my tendency to find curbs by Braille. But the all-time winner for me was when my right front tire just wouldn’t hold air above about 10 psi. Turns out I’d hit a chuckhole and actually bent the wheel, so the edge of the tire wouldn’t seal properly. A guy at my usual tire store banged the wheel back into shape with a maul for $10.

Biff’s an amateur. My tires ARE live snakes. The hissing just means I’m going fast.

    The Duck Has Spoken.

  3. The Dukenator says:

I once filled up a tire with air and heard a loud bang. Turns out, I damaged the inner tube by over-inflating. Oops.

But if you hear hissing, it means either you pissed off the cat or someone stuffed snakes in your tires.

Speaking of tire trouble, one time I cruising down the high (fast than I should be) and one of the car trailer pulled directly if front of me, I slammed on my brakes I made it out fine, but lo and behold on my next vist to get my car inspection they tell me I have square wheels from the friction flatting my tires.

  5. Grug says:

    bed of snakes
    den of snakes
    nest of snakes
    pit of snakes

Don’t think Party of snakes is a proper collective noun for them.

  6. Owen says:

Grug, what if they’re having an actual party? With paper hats and booze.

  7. Gwid says:

I was going to say it, but Grug beat me to it. And then Owen beat me to the next thing I was gonna say. So I guess I’m stuck for interesting matter to put here, other than a rant on how I have no interesting matter to put here. I had nothing else to put here, so I added this sentence as filler.

I’m tired of all these blankety-blank snakes on this blankety-blank bicycle!

  9. pt says:

I’d be kinda freaked out by a party of snakes leaking out of my tires.

  10. Cyndaquazy says:

No, it is NOT a relief to realize that the ground you are riding on is a bunch of snakes! (I hope they’re non-toxic)

I had a nail in a tire that ruined the felly. wasnt to nice.

  12. Trevor says:

That happened to me a while ago. I was driving around and someone pointed out that my tire was almost flat. Such a slow leak that I didn’t notice all day. Then when it was taken to the shop, my mom had thanked me for getting a flat tire. Why? All four tires were bald and needed to be replaced.

  13. MaskedMan says:

What happens when you snake springs a leak..?

  14. Azkyroth says:

That’s not too surprising; it seems like a nail would seal semi-decently if it didn’t cause an outright blowout.

  15. Wizard says:

Look on the bright side Chris; better three nails in one tire than one nail each in three tires.

  16. August says:

Ain’t no party like a reptile party ‘cuz a reptile party don’t stop! Not even for two-wheeled vehicles like Biff’s! Which…which really says something about the social problems within the reptile communities of this country. The system has failed them.

  17. Radical Edward says:

I never dealt with a blowout. I don’t drive and it’s been years since I rode a bike.

  18. Kitsune Dzelda says:

For someone like me, Sssssssssssss coming from my bike is one of the worst sounds imaginable to hear on the way to work on my bike 😛 Its either going to be flat in a half mile, or someone stuffed a cactus bomb in it. Either way, I dont forsee getting to work anytime soon.

I live in New Orleans and in the year after Katrina everyone was constantly getting roofing nails stuck in their tires, as there was so much re-roofing work going on. Roofing nails have a very large circular head, making them perfectly suited to standing point-directly-up wherever they land. Often on a road. I gave all my friends little air compressors for Xmas that year, for pumping up the tire until you could get manage to deal with it. I completely lost count of how many roofing nails I picked up.

  20. i know snakes hissing snakes are fun especially when you find them and catch them

  21. Levi A says:

I got a flat tire on my bike once. Just suddenly heard a hissing and less than 50 feet later my tire was completely flat. I went back and looked and never found whatever had poked the hole.

Worst place I ever had a bike tire blowout? On the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway in Colorado, midpoint between Peaceful Valley and Ward (about four miles in either direction).
A loose piece of metal punctured the tire and caused a one-inch gash in the inner tube. Luckily I managed to plug it with the on-board repair kit and then rode 36 miles to Boulder, where I got a new tire…
The scary thing is that later that day I heard a news report of another biker getting mauled to death by a puma on the same stretch of road, an hour or two after I had passed…

  23. wingsofwrath says:

Later edit: I searched for the story and it appears the news report was sensationalized – the incident actually involved a bobcat rather than a mountain lion and the biker escaped with minor injuries…

  24. Biff says:

    I crashed their party >:D
