#965 – Absorb

I think I had an abnormal childhood vegetable experience. Apparently I was supposed to have been forced or tricked into eating them. I don’t really remember this happening at all. I remember really liking asparagus and broccoli and eating a whole can of peas by myself. The only thing I remember objecting to was raw onions.

that is an awesome solution. 🙂

I liked vegetables as a child. I used to eat carrots and lettuce straight from the crisper drawer. Broccoli was also a favorite. Cauliflower not so much, but I love it now. Oh, and celery was fantastic as well though I still choke on the long fibers. =(

@Chuck – Same here. I had no problems with Broccoli, Carrots were a favorite snack of mine, though celery had to at least have peanut butter or something. I do remember being opposed to peppers as a kid, though, but that was more because I hated overly spicy things as a kid. Now, I’ll put sliced bell pepper on dang near anything in lieu of lettuce, and actually dare my parents to cook jalapenos into stuff XD

  4. Sounds like my experience with veggies. (Liking them all except raw onions) I’m told I used to eat brussels sprouts raw and I once threw a tantrum over a pepper.

I suspect the stereotypical response is partly due to the physically addictive properties of chocolate, sugar, meat, and milk products, and partly due to a non-trivial portion of the population having a genetic quirk that causes them to taste one of the chemicals in cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts) as very bitter. (I have a friend with that problem)

Biff you’re looking thin again…eatz the veggies, they be yummy. Hey, you’re not planning to moisturize with salad dressing, are you?

Asparagus, celery, spinach, peas, these are green friends I’ve always had. I don’t like raw broccoli (though I love it steamed) and I hardly ever eat carrots. A whole bunch of them just mess with me and the taste is bothersome no matter how they get prepared.

Canned asparagus was and still is my foe. My dad loved them and forced the rest of us to eat those slimy things. It wasn’t till much much later I ate the stuff fresh and found that it was good. If fact it seems the only thing fresh and canned asparagus share is a name. Olives I eat like candy.

  8. Mouserz says:

Steamed asparagus is okay, peas are good in potato salad, but onions are just great.

  9. Varkarrus says:

    He could probably do it.

  10. Croc says:

The only vegetable I remember absolutely hating was – and still is – okra. Don’t care if it’s fresh or fried, it tastes disgusting.

  11. When my brother was younger, he refused to eat peas. But if my parents instead told him they were “montegules” (a word my father made up), he would clear the plate.

  12. dartigen says:

The only vegetable I have an objection to is peas, and if they’re fresh then I have no problems. Canned? Bleargh. I’ve always loathed canned/frozen vegetables. Canned veggies taste odd and frozen ones have no taste. I’m picky about other vegetables though, especially about cooking them – they don’t need to be mush that holds its former shape until you bite it, a bit of crunch is a good thing to have.

The only vegetable I can’t stand is witlof. It just tastes too weird.

  13. MaskedMan says:

Hell, I even like brussels sprouts…

  14. Acies says:

Reminds me of my aunt’s face steamer >.> I saw a commercial for them while staying at her old house that my grandma was going to sell, and I thought to myself “what kind of weirdo would buy that?” Then I helped clean out the storage room to prepare for sale and there, I found the face steamer >.>

As children my brother and I would ponder over who, exactly, these children were who hated broccoli. All of our friends and family loved it, and we loved it too.

To this day I believe some very silly grown-ups simply decided kids don’t like veggies to make themselves feel superior to us 😛

  16. i.half4 says:

@ mell42: Sorry, I don’t buy into conspiracy and/or superiority theories. Have you ever *tasted* frozen squash?

But I did love that broccoli, any kind. The secret? Hollandaise sauce.

  17. i.half4 says:

At first I wondered what the heck those weird looking things were. I didn’t even consider bits of 8mm film, because film doesn’t stick. And then I looked again after posting and realized it was corn.

…which is technically a grain, not a vegetable.

  18. SlavetotheEnder says:

I think it all has to do with source (canned vs fresh) and how extensively cooked (still retaining natural color vs disgusting paste of unknown origin)

  19. SlavetotheEnder says:

I always used to pretend that broccoli were mini trees.. Made it a lot more fun to eat them

  20. Niha says:

As a child, I loved spinachs and canned asparagus (I still do).
As for Biff, osmosis doesn’t work as studying method, so I’m afraid it might be useless for getting veggies’ nutrients too.

  21. DtLe says:

I hate the taste of any vegetable (except corn) when it’s raw (which is why I can never eat a salad unless I pour an unhealthy amount of dressing on it). I can tolerate most veggies if they’re cooked, and I only like tomatoes if they’re in a soup or something similar. Peas are kinda iffy for me though. 😛

  22. KeiFace says:

I loved all veggies all the time! My little brother was (and still is) a completely different story though.

  23. Chris says:

@i.half4 – Yes but it doesn’t say “vegetable” anywhere in the comic.

  24. gelugon2105 says:

Nice rebuke, Chris. You thought of everything.

  25. Marr965 says:

I like eating frozen peas, while they’re still frozen. Somehow, the cold makes them nicer.

  26. Hershey says:

I always liked baby carrots with a bunch of ranch dressing best. I guess its just ’cause I could crunch them in half rather loudly and get some glances/stares.
My little brother hates everything but corn and potatos, which really aren’t vegetables.

  27. i.half4 says:

Actually, I just remembered what I thought they were at first. Some kind of weird bandages. Shades of Frankenstein?

  28. Sigurdgram says:

sorry, pet peeve of mine, have to state why this is all wrong. that’s not osmosis. it’s diffusion. osmosis refers solely to the diffusion of water. absorbing anything else is not osmosis, but some other type of diffusion.

  29. Elkian says:

Always loved most veggies myself too.
Plus my mom did awesome meatloaf so I didn’t realize you weren’t supposed to like it.

  30. Random Girl! says:

Several of my sisters will open a tin of peas, green beans, carrots, whatever… and eat it. From the can.

    *shudders*

  31. Mags says:

I love all veggies. Tasty stuff. I still do, I think my current favorite is Artichoke. They are delicious. Mmm.

  32. Dorten says:

I believe, that childrens’ hate to vegetables is a myth. I’ve never seen a single person who didn’t like vegetables as a kid.

  33. Marscaleb says:

All the vegetables I didn’t like as a kid are ones I still don’t like as an adult. I hate green beans and cauliflower. Many vegetables I don’t like by themselves or in various dishes, but love when they are in other dishes.

The closest I really come to this on is (1) foods that I didn’t really care about, which I still don’t much care for, but I’m not so picky as to refuse to eat them. And (2) as a kid I always said I hated the way onions felt in my mouth; the way they crunched. I claimed that the flavor had nothing to do with that. And since then, I’ve grown to not be repulsed by that and can enjoy it in various meals.
