#937 – Compressed

I read a lot when I lived in Boston. Most of it was done on public transportation. I frequently added a bit of extra walking to my trip home as I sat there on the bus oblivious that my stop had passed blocks ago.

I know how you feel. I have a bad habit of doing that with just about anything I focus on.

  2. reynard61 says:

My problem was sorta the opposite: I’d read at the bus stops and look up just in time to see it whizzing past me on the way to where I wanted to go. Then I’d have to wait for the next half-hour (or 40 min., or hour) for the next one. Now I listen to my .mp3 player and *watch* for the bus.

I’ve stopped reading on public transportation, too many encounters with crazy people asking me what I’m reading. Then there’s the people reading over my shoulders and I’m like, “why start reading half way through a book?”

  4. SilentDragon says:

I stopped reading on mass transit just because I couldn’t keep track of stops, same thing when waiting for a bus 😛 (though I was a little better on that end of the stick). mp3 players have sometimes zoned me out too, but nothing like being really tired to cause a panic that you missed your stop when you’re barely halfway….

  5. Space Butler says:

I missed a stop or two when I first started riding the bus home from college, when I also happened to have been reading the song of fire and ice series. Also, I’m one of those brilliant people that likes to read and walk at the same time (bumping into things is a third component to that activity)

So Biff lives in the stone age now?

  7. ZeoViolet says:

This should have been called “Reader’s Digest” except you only use one-word titles, Chris….*L*

  8. Anon says:

Too often things pass me by as I read. In high school, my teachers were always snatching up my peers’ cell phones and iPods when they were using those instead of listening. As for me, my teachers were more often yelling at me to put my books away…

  9. baughbe says:

Ah, Jurassic Park reference. Saw the best screening of it at a drive-in. Right where it got to the part when it started raining and the T-Rex got out, it started raining at the drive-in. And they both stopped at the same time. Best Special Effects EVER.

  10. Mico says:

    “Baughbe: Ah, Jurassic Park reference.”

Either that, or Biff really Believes in Creationism. 🙂

    Whatever, these are great comics.

  11. Eleanor says:

I have a sixth sense with bus stops. I will always, without fail, look up just as we’re coming up to my stop. This may have something to do with the big pothole about two hundred metres before my stop.

  12. Wizard says:

Or else Biff is visiting Japan…

  13. Acies says:

omg, if my professor is a dinosaur, i almost had the same experience as biff! It was actually a bit ironic. My prof lent me a fantasy novel one summer. I was reading that by the lake one day, and he and his wife happened to be strolling along the lake. They saw me and hovered over my head for 1/2 a minute debating if that’s me because I had my sunglasses on. I had absolutely no clue they were there until they said hi XD

  14. Chris says:

@Acies – Hopefully he didn’t step on you!

  15. MaskedMan says:

    Go go Godzilla!

I used to take the Metroliner to NYC every day for a consulting gig… just under two hours each way. I’d get a lot of paperwork done on the ride, but I’d start getting paranoid about an hour or so in, and keep looking up to see where we were. Eventually I started bringing along an alarm clock – I got a lot more work done on the train after that. 😛

  16. Kitsune Dzelda says:

Wow….. Biff musta thought it was so real he got compressed by his own creation.

Leats it was better than getting eaten like that lawyer did.

  17. Lou Hannoe says:

Did Biff get eaten, or is that book concealing the ends of his eyebrows poking out of the ground…?

  18. Random says:

I know what you mean Biff. I’ve been enthralled by books as well and it is fun, but I haven’t been stepped on a dinosaur yet, I should read more.

  19. Hershey says:

I’m happy to know I’m not alone.
By the time I was in sixth grade, I knew my school really quite well, so I’d walk and read at the same time. I was paranoid enough to glance up if I felt like I was walking into something, but I was not paranoid enough to keep from occasionally getting… well, not precisely lost, just misplaced. I always got yelled at for it.
I could also read through any lecture without noticing xD

  20. Joenis says:

lol, I’m like that when I’m drawing. Good thing the Rex is dead or.. I’d b dead.

  21. Vannah says:

I have that same problem with my DS

  22. Kasain says:

ah yes, reading, i used to read through people talking directly to me in class (such as the teacher) and get in no small amount of trouble for it, one of my old english teachers complained to my mom that i ‘read too much’ haha, i just love reading ^^

  23. Kasain says:

oh yeah, and i started reading and walking in like, the third grade so i’m pretty good at it now xD

  24. Twilightfairy says:

i could never read on a moving thing i’d make me nauseeous. (then eventually hurl) My mp3 has made me do that oo, zone out and focus on the music, then realize the place i was walking to was four blocks ago.

  25. Ziriath says:

@Twilightfairy: The duck on the top of your avatar’s head is a Discworld reference?

On our streets, it’s quite dangerous to walk and read a book. But sometimes I get bored at home and weather is not good, so I pick a book and spend a Sunday afternoon sitting in a tram or a bus and reading.

  26. Twilightfairy says:

@Ziriath- Nope. Just found this icon while scrolling through various ff7 icons. Apparently each one of these icons has something cute and random attached to it. (i.e phone, heart, box..ect)

  27. no name says:

I thought it was going to be “It’s Risky” Week.

  28. Acies says:

    @ Chris: thanks for the concern XD I believe they were about 1 step away from stepping on me. Fortunately I was sitting on a string of rocks lining the lake so they would have had to make an effort to step up onto the rocks to actually step on me ^^;

  29. Radical Edward says:

I never missed my stops when riding the bus. The driver missed it once and I had to walk on the shoulder of the road to get back to my stop.

  30. Elkian says:

*STOMP* *flip* *STOMP* *flip* *STOMP* *SQUISH*

  31. figgyleaf says:

i love how the book isnt squished 🙂

  32. hayabusa says:

I have a friend at work that will be reading a book, and take a drink of his soda while still reading. He just lifts the book to match the angle of his head, and doesn’t even realize he’s doing it.
