#935 – Powder

I was never good at mixing the powdered cheese-like substance into the mac & cheese when I was a kid. There would always be little lumps of secret powder hiding in the finished batch waiting to blast your taste buds with the force of 100 normal bites. That was never something that would stop me from finishing it of course.

    I would imagine it’s more like cheese soup, although only as good as you can expect from a pouch.

    I never liked Mac & “Cheese” because whatever it is that they put with the Mac sure doesn’t taste like cheese. (I usually ended having to add spaghetti or pizza sauce to it to get it anywhere *near* edibility!)

    Here’s what I do: Mix the powder and the milk in the mixing cup with a small whisk or a fork BEFORE pouring it over the hot noodles. This way you can see the clumps before they get lost in the meal.

    I’ve never been a huge fan of regular mac n cheese. I remember way back (prolly still around) when they had shells and cheese that came with the packet of premade creamy cheese. Didn’t have to worry about mixing any powder. I miss the good ol’ days.

    Cheese-Milk.. That seems like something youd get if you left your milk too long in the fridge. Something just naturally unnatural. On the other hand, Mac-n-Chocolate might catch on.

    I used to love Mac & Cheese. Especially with hot dogs in it. I think the chocolate might be counter-intuitive with the hot dogs, but as a stand-alone…

    Experimentation is required.

    Last year me and some friends were on vacation, and we started to prepare some mac and cheese, unfortunately the box was over 2 years old, and the cheese powder turned brown. HOPEFULLY Biff does not keep his mac and cheese boxes for that long.

    If anything, those little lumps of macaroni and cheese flavor is why I ate the stuff so much when I was little.

    Hmmm… The joke got ruined for me. Mac and cheese is not really popular here. On the other hand, I used to eat pasta with cocoa powder. My sister still does actually…
    It’s pretty good.

    I can’t stand much of the “food” that comes as a powder mix in boxes. I guess I was spoiled by my mother, who made most things from more basic ingredients. Including mac and cheese with hot dogs.

    As a kid I watched an infomercial that described how to make chocolate pasta. The kids in the audience went nuts over it, and I know others who have made it IRL on a regular basis.

    However, I’m strictly mac-n-cheese. I always just stirred the hell out of the stuff and rarely ever ended up with any lumps as a result.

    I was taught the Sacred KD Method by my brother when I was much shorter than I am now. It’s weird when I think about it, really; more than once I tried making a whole box on my own, and it almost always ended up with weak sauce and huge Flavour Pods…after I finally worked up the courage to ask him, and he showed me how he made Kraft Dinner the Right Way (c), I rarely had it happen again.

    Baltika, that seems to be the strangest aspect of brand KD I can think of- even under optimal conditions (short of an Intel chip ‘clean room’) and temperature, a box of stored, unmixed KD will not last palatably for more than 9 or 10 months. Weird. You’d think it’d be the exact sort of thing that’d be stuffed with artificial gunk and preservatives…I will add one postscript, though: I don’t even know if they make this stuff anymore; it was a no-name brand Kraft Dinner clone shells ‘n’ cheese variety, with identical preparation. The really wild thing about it was that the boxes were/are sealed like a nuclear attack bunker. My bro stocked up on them when he was in college, and when he moved out he left behind about 2 dozen of them, none of which I’ve opened in the subsequent _10 years_ that smelled off, went bad or tasted anything but delicious when made. And I still have about 7 or 8 left. The last one I made got cooked up this past November. And there was nothing wrong with it. Dude.

    @Foxby: hotchocolate is supposed to be made with milk and ground baking chocolate that is heated up. and how does cheese drink sound good when classic made hotchocolate (Or closest possible) sounds horrible. Meh its all taste. My grandmother used to make me homemade hot chocolate, she still has the best of everything sweet 😀

    I’m finding, as Biff has, that chocolate powder goes with lots of things. I’ve put chocolate protein powder in lots of foods, but haven’t tried choco-mac…yet!

    Foxby, do you think hot chocolate is SUPPOSED to be that watery crap? It is basically chocolate milk, warmed up. It is best made the old-fashioned way with milk, cocoa and sugar. The powdered-packet-thing is in fact intended to reproduce this warm chocolate milk drink, and it does a much better job of when mixed with milk than with water, regardless of what the instructions might say to use as liquid (powdered milk reconstituted with water never really tastes like milk, chocolate or not).

    I make mac and cheese all the time. Eventually I’ll have to stop eating it. Why? I’m on a diet. Mac and Chocolate probably won’t catch on with me.

    I have a system for mac & cheese. There’s only one brand whose cheese powder I like, but I don’t like their noodles and they don’t sell the powder separately, so I buy boxes and boxes of their mac & cheese and then big bags of my favourite noodles. My mum and my siblings who still live at home get the surplus noodles in huge plastic bags at regular intervals.

    The cheese powder mixes up best if before draining the macaroni pot you pour a little of its water into the bowl, mix the cheese in, and then add the drained noodles. It is full of deliciousness.

    Of course, the secret to perfect mac and cheese is to cook the noodles in the milk from the start rather than in water to be drained. Also, do what you want with the powdered cheese packet it comes with, but add real cheese to it either way.
