#901 – Split

I lived in Boston for a few years after college. One of the craziest things I discovered there was candlepin bowling. I had known about ten pin bowling for most of my life and I played it a lot as a kid. I couldn’t believe that this alternate version had existed this whole time without me knowing. My one regret is that I never got to play it when I had the chance.

I’m guessing something along the lines of “wrong equipment/outfits” week.

  2. Madness says:

Or just something like “not so good situations” week.

    Who knows.

  3. Shorty says:

    @Madness:
That’s just Biff in general, though.

  4. Mophtran says:

See, I grew up about an hour North of Boston. The only bowling alley in a large radius was candlepin. It was all I knew for the longest time.

Now I just bowl on Wii. Hahaha.

  5. Zephir says:

Woah. Never heard of candlepin bowling before now. Gotta try that sometime.

  6. PsychoDuck says:

If candlepin blew your mind, wait’ll you hear about the great Canadian pastime of five-pin bowling. Confuses every single person I mention it to.

    The Duck Has Spoken.

  7. BDan says:

Don’t worry, you didn’t miss much. Candlepin bowling is a pale, annoying imitation of real bowling.

  8. gelugon2105 says:

Biff will be banned from the bowling courts forever.

  9. Hershey says:

Well, if anyone needs some wood shavings…

  10. Karl says:

And more still, there is also Duckpin Bowling!
The pins for this variation are rounder, and roll around real silly like. I am pretty sure it is also a New England thing. They need every kind of ball throwing sport imaginable!

  11. Raya says:

I personally have never gone bowling, so i have no real input for this comic, save to say that biff shouldn’t drag his feet.

  12. Beege says:

Every time! Every time I look at the newest comic, I have to clamp my mouth shut so I don’t wake up I sleeping roommate. Biff isreally good at catching me off guard.

Also: At least he has some guidelines for his steps next frame.

  13. Chris says:

    @Beege – Awesome 🙂

  14. MKH says:

I spent several years being baffled by the lack of candelpin bowling (which … i thought is the same as duckpin) when I moved out of New England, so I guess it all balances out

  15. JinnySH says:

i grew up 5-pin bowling, candle-pin style (without the funny-looking pins, but same rules). i’ve still never 10-pin bowled – we just don’t have it around here

  16. Marr965 says:

I think that the situation for this week calls for one word: Oops…

  17. MaskedMan says:

@Raya; there’s a certain amount of ‘slide’ inherent in bowling.

I’m just wondering how it is that Biff hasn’t broken his ankles…

  18. Church says:

Chris, I have read every single comic you have posted thus far. All I have to say is”You are comic GOD”. Just thought i’d put that out there.

    @ PsychoDuck

I know someone who scored 300 in 5-pin. It was not her best score but now that 10 pin is way more well known here she likes to brag about it.

  20. killjoy99 says:

did he throw a golf ball?

  21. Skull says:

@MaskedMan: well, maybe his ankles are broken, but taking into account the massive head injuries Biff has survived, maybe he justs shrugs broken ankles off

  22. Hillbilly says:

they still have candle pin bowling.
it might just be over in Nova Scotia only tho

  23. BrainpanSonata says:

I suck at bowling IRL. But give me some Wii Sports Resort 100 Pin Bowling…
