#864 – Highlights

When I was a kid I would sometimes have to sit in the waiting room of a doctor’s office for a long time. Highlights magazine was always the bright spot of the experience. It was usually the only kid friendly reading material available. Everything else was boring adult stuff filled with words and words and words. I would look around the room and see the adults looking at their boring adult magazines. Clearly not having fun.

I… do not really understand the gist of this strip. Under some circumstances, apple juice and orange juice are the same? Are those pear-shaped devices juice-making machines?

  2. kylogram says:

    Orange instead of apple
    Coil in the power cord
power switch on the other side
the line on the sleeve is moved
    crack in the lamp
    dot on the wall
lines on the pants are different
    kinks in eyebrows are different
    Shadows are different
    lampneck is a different color

and that’s ten, are there more?

  3. Drakey says:

I need to get a subscription to Highlights.

  4. MadKanga says:

All broken lightbulbs are created equal

  5. orphan38 says:

I see twelve differences. am I right?

  6. Polymorph says:

Added shading on the lamp, light switch is backwards, the apple is replaced with an orange, the cord is coiled, and there’s an additional dot on Biff’s pants. And on the wall. There is also a crack on the lamp, a cloud is slightly more curved, and the shadow next to the table is backwards.

As you can see, I love these puzzles.

  7. Space Butler says:

    They both make excellent lightbulbs.

  8. Micah says:

I see at least four differences.

  9. Kiwi says:

I’ve found 9: apple to orange, crack on the lamp, Biff’s upper eyebrow, the changed detail line on his sleeve, the dot on the wall, the curl in the cord, the extra dot on Biff’s pocket, the flipped switch position, and the color of the bar that Biff’s holding.

    Anyone/Anything else?

Great work btw! I loved this week’s theme.

  10. Kiwi says:

ACK! I just saw a 10th one… Oh, I love these puzzles. XD

  11. Soniku64 says:

Sometimes metaphors just are wrong. 😀

  12. Leonard says:

Haha. I love how it’s also a “spot the differences” picture.

    I saw seven.

  13. Edem says:

    I’ve found 13.

  14. Edem says:

    I mean 15. :PP

  15. SilentBob says:

Trying to compare these pictures is really like comparing apples and oranges (sorry, I couldn’t resist!)

  16. LazerWulf says:

    Ooh! I loved these!

    1. Orange instead of apple
    2. Clouds are different
    3. Vase has crack
    4. Cord has loop
    5. Light knob is on other side
    6. Pants crease has extra dot
    7. Fly on the wall? (It’s some kind of speck, for sure…)
    8. Eyebrow bend is shorter

  17. Marr965 says:

I can see seven differences at least. They aren’t the same.

  18. Landbasered says:

And yet when I read highlights magazine as an adult, I catch everyone’s attention. They can mutter names under their breath, but I know they’re just jealous I got the only copy in the waiting room.

  19. Morzikei says:

I believe adults wouldn’t define “adult” magazines as boring…

    Also, what is that contraption?

  20. Fafnir13 says:

Lessee….depending on how you count things, I’ve got 12 differences. That’s 1 clouds, 2 fruit, 3 screw thingy, 4 juicer tube, 5 shading on juicer, 6 crack on juicer, 7 juicer cord, 8 dot on wall, 9 shading on wall, 10 crease on sleeve, 11 pants pocket, and 12 shading on Biff. Maybe shading should only count as 1 difference, making the count at 10. Did I miss any?

  21. Baughbe says:

Love it, That’s a lamp btw. I just hope those are low wattage florescent fruits. Gotta save power.

  22. MaskedMan says:

Dang. All the good ones are taken.
I hated when I’d grab the Highlights mag, and all the puzzles had been marked up by other kids, or the answer keys had been scribbled over, or pages had been torn out… Nothing like a despoiled Highlights to make the office visit drag forever.

  23. Solace says:

I only counted 10 differences, but it’s true, neither apples nor oranges will work as light bulbs. Potatoes on the other hand…

  24. sco3tt says:

    1. The feet and legs of the giant whipped cream man standing outside are moved.
    2. Biff has 37 cents in his right front pocket in the first panel, but only 36 cents in the second one.
All the rest of the differences are hallucinations. You’re all crazy.

  25. Linzleh says:

Highlights was so cool! Found 12 differences between Biff & lamp and alter dimension Biff. Do more pleez 🙂

  26. TaintedRose says:

most i could get was 15, that’s being picky with shirt shadows though

  27. g0r_D says:

    1. Is the giant whipped cream man perpetually jiggling?
    2. He does still have 37 cents, but the change has definitely been jangled. One penny is obscured by the quarter.
It is irrelevant whether or not it is a hallucination. Yes.

  28. g0r_D says:

So, obviously the quality of light from the fruit differs explaining the change in shadows?

  29. no name says:

    Puzzle Week!

  30. Matt Lee says:

On my website I have uploaded a few 3D Biff pics I made with Rhino! You should come see!

  31. Matt Lee says:

Man I haven’t been on this site in forever! But it’s good we still got the same fans commenting faithfully. I got a lot of catching up to do.

  32. gelugon2105 says:

Oh… So this is a “Spot the Differences” puzzle strip? Sorry, it did not occur to me that the panels are actually parallels, not of a series.

  33. YarB says:

Wow…. can’t believe you guys didn’t spot this one:

    *spoiler*

The bend of the lower elbow crease is different. Yes, I am proud of seeing something the entire internet has not noticed yet. 😀

  34. YarB says:

Ok, I should be working on other things and not procrastinating.. but since I’m a crazy analytical person, and an idiot to boot, here’s my best shot, without added halucinations, that the *cough* great web in the sky could not yet notice: *cough* 22-23 differences.

    In detail (**SPOILERS**):

    1. Eyebrows (top eyebrow bent differently)
    2. Clouds x2 (different angle of lower portion, plus width of upper portion)
    3. Lightbuld: One an orange, other an apple.
    4. Socket: Pointing opposite directions
    5. Color of socket rod: One light, other dark
    6. Wall: Fly or dot on wall in right photo
    7. Vase crack
    8. Cord coil: one curled, other not
    9. Chin/neck shadow (nitpicky): the shadow on the left is slightly larger)
    10. Back-of-neck-shadow: There is a different shape to the shadow on the back of the neck. Specifically, the left is concave and the right is convex.
    11. Sleeve shadow: Different shape shadows on the lower portion of the sleeve
    12. Shirt shadow, belly area: different shape shadows near belly. Right with two humps.
    13. Pant shadow: Different shape shadows on the pants. Upper curve is broader on right, and sharper on bottom.
    14. Sleeve crease: different direction of black sleeve crease.
    15. Pants dot: dot on pants on right
    16. Vase shadow: Right vase has shadow
    17. Vase color (nitpicky): Right vase is slightly darker.
    18. Vase table-shadow: Right has broader shadow on the table from the vase.
    19. Left lower table shadow: Left has longer shadow below lip of table.
    20. Wall shadow: Left has shadow on the wall from table, right has shadow on wall from person.
    21. [[ultra-nitpicky]] Look at collar of shirt. Left person is slightly more to the left of edge of frame. He’s more “in the picture.” Right is slightly more cut-off.
    22. Lower-sleeve-arm shadow: Shadow below front sleeve disappears in a diagonal fashion on the left, but remains as a shadow all the way across the arm on the right.

  35. kikkoman says:

just cross your eyes, make the two pictures one, and anything that you see is transparent is a difference.

  36. Grayson says:

kikkoman, I think you just ruined spot the difference pictures for me. That was so painfully obvious and I am stunned it never occurred to me.

  37. Corinthiar says:

I’m surprised to see that no one has claimed spotting the crease in his left elbow. In one, the crease extends right from his forearm; in the other, the crease extends down from his shoulder.

  38. YukiSnowflake says:

@corinthiar – one of the 1st things i noticed. also noted 5 comments up.
i listed 15 here, but deleted them after seeing YarB’s comment.
instead i wrote down the numbers of which of YarB’s i got.
    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18. I also noted said elbow crease.

  39. Tech says:

I always think “Apples and oranges can too be compared.”
    Both fruit
    both come from trees
    both healthy snacks
both great for breakfast, as beverages and as the fresh fruit course
