#838 – Frozen

Fortunately this doesn’t happen to me. I save often and I have multiple on-site and off-site backups of everything. Nope, never had one problem with a computer. Not me. No sir.

I love how everything is knocked over…the mouse is flipped, the pens…

Where can I get one of those?

  2. Stephen says:

Yeah me neither. I’ve got women figured out too.

  3. Jess says:

I was the Blue Screen of Death for Halloween once. Still have the shirt. I can sincerely say it’s the scariest costume I ever wore.

  4. MrPriest says:

Haha..! Something I can relate too, I’d love to have one of those!

  5. Mophtran says:

No punched in screens or tossed around keyboards?

Is tomorrow going to be an Office Space reference?

  6. Space Butler says:

Oh, how often I’ve said to my computer, “I would punch you in the FACE, if you’re face weren’t an expensive computer moniter.” But seriously, Biff is scary today.

  7. ZeoViolet says:

You do realize you’ve just jinxed yourself, right?

  8. Morzikei says:

Oh great, now your computers will crash and we will not be treated to Biff regularly.

  9. Curse you, Chris, for cursing me.

My computer just rebooted on it’s own last night, for no reason whatsoever, and even though I saved all my work, I lost a lot of stuff.

  10. Bobzone says:

“Not me. No sir.” *cough cough* hehe

  11. Chris says:

@Andore Mordre – Bummer. I’m sure that this is the last time anything like that will ever happen.

  12. dartigen says:

Heh. I save important stuff to my USB. Any rumoured ‘crashes’ should be read as ‘I forgot to do my homework again’.

(it’s the best excuse ever because there’s no way to tell)

  13. soilent says:

Once I worked at a place that still had windows 95 for their label printer (2k and xp refused to work with it), and I worked the keyboard that fast that the system displayed a BSOD at least every five minutes.

  14. Croc says:

    Well.
I guess it’s not like the time my friend left his wifi autoconnect on and I made him run a reboot from command prompt.
He started shouting about “WHY ARE YOU SHUTTING DOWN?” followed by a string of profanities and screams of “SAVE FASTER!” (when you run the command from the prompt you get a few seconds to take care of business)

  15. baughbe says:

Every “upgrade” since my days of the 286 with Windows 3.11 and DOS 5.0 (yeah, I’m THAT old) has seen ever increasing issues. I wish now I had kept my first machine. It may have been slow (11 minutes to boot) but it was reliable. Of course then I could run my old Pong Game and not have the computer beat me in half a milli-sec.

  16. kaitou says:

Now, if they were to replace the BSOD with a picture of Bill Gates or Steve Ballmer, the monitor stand throttling would be so much more satisfying…

  17. taber_man says:

that’s amazing. Why can’t this be built into real life as well? It would save so much time and anger management.

  18. James says:

Make this monitor and sell it.

    You’d make millions.

  19. Zaffa says:

Oh man, this is the best one yet!
Also I’m back to responding to these.

  20. Sven says:

Why is it that people still always use the Windows 9x style BSODs for jokes like this? The ones on NT-based versions of Windows (including 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7) look quite different. It’s probably because you don’t see BSODs on those newer OSs quite as often as in the bad old days. ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. I run Linux with all my apps set to auto-save every 1-5 minutes (depending on whether the UI freezes up while saving) and nightly incremental backups with a one-week history. (I also have UPS battery backup, SMARTd hard drive monitoring, and I choose my apps for stability or, failing that, good crash recovery)

I’ve never lost data, but I did recently bump my auto-backup up from one backup on my second physical drive to three (one on another machine on the LAN) in response to having to (successfully) transfer my “backed up but a hassle to restore from DVD” movie collection off a failing drive which SMARTd warned me about.

Oh, and those two times I had to restore my Greasemonkey scripts from auto-backup because of an unusually non-harmless Firefox crash.

So many things to say software related, but which soapbox to choose?

Nah, I’ll just say Great Comic and off to bed!

  23. Catherine says:

I love that the monitor base is “wearing” the top of a blue polo shirt.

  24. Knuckles says:

Biff is still working on a Win9x environement? this office needs to upgrade their systems!

  25. -2! says:

I am fairly good at crashing software on command. That being said I can’t remember the last time I crashed something on this laptop that wasn’t one of my programs that I made an error in (or to do with my job).

That being said the only time in my life (monday) I used a Mac (for work (I test software which we are currently making compatible with the Mac)) I ended up having to figure out what the equivalent of CTRL+ALT+DEL was as some program that I didn’t even open (I think (again I had never used a Mac before)) was hanging and so the computer would not shut down.

Basically I am not compatible with Macs (hopefully that will avoid the Windows VS Mac debate)

  26. Zoran says:

Oh, I know the BSoD oh too well…. I can’t run a virus scan on this computer, and I can only run some of my programs every other bootup (for some reason when my computer recovers from a crash the programs work, but when I just turn it on normally they cause it to crash).

  27. Namaps says:

“I was the Blue Screen of Death for Halloween once. Still have the shirt. I can sincerely say itโ€™s the scariest costume I ever wore.”

    That sounds so indescribably awesome.

  28. Mad David says:

    @Baughbe:

That’s funny, because *I* remember Windows 3.11 as a buggy POS. DOS 5.0 was great, as long as you could remember how to set your hardware up in the autoexec.bat file.

Windows 98 was the first genuinely stable graphical OS Microsoft put out, and I have yet to have Windows XP Pro crash on me. A few individual programs crash on a regular basis, but the operating system itself hasn’t given me any problems.
A pitty about Windows Vista though.
Until Microsoft comes out with something better, I’m going to rely on “upgrading” my current computer so that I can re-install from my OEM XP disc. (If you keep at least one component of the old computer, it’s still an upgrade, right?)

  29. Hershey says:

My first computer lasted about four years before spazzing out. Randomly, I’d get the blue screen of death, and it’d restart to delete everything I was doing. It took an hour or two to start up [ seriously ] and so I never turned it off in fear I wouldn’t get it started ever again. Still, It restarted at so many bad times, including in the middle of a DARE report I had due that day D:

  30. FirewolfX7 says:

I rarely get blue screens and there were only two ocasions where I got them myself. My first computer never got them, it was a good computer too. My second however, was custom built by my own hands, it managed to blue screen after trying to enter sleep or hibernation with a setting that was off for my newly purchased backup battery, the other one is when I managed to make two different operating systems use the same program… windows can’t even read the drive this other OS was on… and the program requested information that was stored here and as far as windows would go… well lets just say windows does not like that very much as it thought that the other OS doesn’t even exsist.

  31. Marr965 says:

On the subject of losing data/homework, one pupil from my school got the best EVER excuse for not handing his homework in. Basically, he left his bag on the bus by accident, and the police thought it was a bomb.
Then again, my mum reckons that she got the best ever excuse for mot handing an assignment in: My son (That is, me) drew all over it. (I was about 3 at the time… XD)

  32. hayabusa says:

my computer has BSoD’d twice now. i’ve had it since the year Circuit City went under (probably a bad choice of where to get it, but it still kicks my old computer’s butt). the first time was 2 weeks after i bought it, and it turned out the motherboard was bad. the next one was 8 months or so later, with the RAM being bad this time. since then (knocks on wood) nothing has gone wrong with it.

P.S. if something goes wrong tomorrow, technology sucks

  33. Handgunman says:

I’ve never seen a BSOD, but there have been a couple of times where my computer has decided that it no longer knows how to turn on, one time i lost EVERYTHING on the computer. Including things like “Word”

  34. My computer exploded the other day and I am now using my brothers laptop. Thankfully the hard drive survived.

  35. Marscaleb says:

Someone should actually make this! They could make a fortune!
