#739 – Gelato

In the summertime our freezer always had a box or two of popsicles inside. We had the enjoyable single stick as well as the frustrating twin stick variety that had to be broken in half on the edge of the kitchen counter before being eaten. Who thought that was a good idea? One of my favorites was fudgesicles. They had a short lifespan though. It was always sad to tear open the wrapper and pull out just the stick as the gooey mess that used to be a delicious treat remained stuck inside.

    You gotta love that shirt.

    Biff was such an egg-head.

  4. jahg says:

Oh, my word! Look at the sucker on that thing! I like his thinking, though.

Well, the damn truck is stopping in Biff’s neighborhood NOW!

I always hated it when the other kids got to the truck first, and bought out all the icecream sandwiches.

  6. dartigen says:

We used to have ice-cream trucks around the place, but it was very rarely that they came down our street, and they were usually too expensive to be worth it. But I do remember the delight of getting a sherbert soft-serve whenever I could. I still do in summer, and on the rare warm days in autumn.

On a somewhat-related note…does anyone know if you can get Ben & Jerry’s icecream in Australia? Wendy’s is the closest we have, and they don’t have many flavours to choose from.

  7. LazerWulf says:

I usually got one of the character-shaped popsicles. Either the Spider-Man, or the Mickey Mouse with the bubble gum nose.

  8. soilent says:

Our Ice Cream Trucks mostly sell SoftIce in a Cone that is sold in an ice cream parlor, too.
Everytime I bought something from them I was afraid I’d catch Salmonellae.
I think I’m lucky we have Kiosks on every Corner.

  9. greatslack says:

    @Shorty

I agree. Put it into production, Chris!

  10. Wow. That picture reminded me of how I used to always tuck my t-shirts into my pants. I don’t anymore, but kids that do are adorable. My kids are going to tuck their shirts in… if they know what’s best for them.

  11. -2! says:

now after a full nights sleep i notice that that is not a sound gun to thick the icecream truck into thinking there are more kids but a giant suction cup gun device thing!

  12. Reg says:

Ice cream trucks… who’s idea was it to have a van drive around neighborhoods playing loud music (that’s almost video game-like) and handing out ice cream? it sounds lie something Biff would come up with!
@greatslack- Wait! We still have to get that “Space Wizards” shirt!

  13. Julie says:

I’m a little dense today, I guess. I was with -2! at first thinking that it was some kind of amplifier to make the ice cream man think there were more kids on Biff’s street. Now I’m not sure if he is trying to capture more children or the truck itself.

  14. crackers says:

I thought you meant short lifespan in that they got eaten all in the same day the box was purchased, cause that’s what happened at my house. eating a fudgesickle while running is not so easy

  15. Nicoli20 says:

It took me all week to catch up to #739. These comics are great, and I will continue reading more of your work.

  16. -2! says:

    @Julie

i was thinking the truck itself but your comment on capturing more children made me laugh…

Quoted from Trevor on April 10th, 2008 at 7:50 pm Chris…combine THREE comics next time, please?
Quoted from Chris on April 10th, 2008 at 11:14 pm @Trevor – Maybe on the 3rd anniversary… maybe.

I fully expect you to combine 4 comics in a 4 year old Biff for your 4th year anniversary!

  17. Trypno01 says:

    BEST INVENTION EVAR!
If I had had one of those as a kid I wouldn’t have had to chase the guy down throughout the whole neighborhood

  18. -2! says:

Okay, I just found out that ice cream trucks have been illegal where i live for several years now because of them running over to many kids chasing them (so if they are sitting at a park or somewhere all day then it fine).

That dose not explain why i see so many of them still.

  19. Jake says:

Biff is in a comic at http://www.leasticoulddo.com 4/10/09. Figured I’d mention that incase nobody got permission. And apperantly Biff has a cd coming out of his head and a XBox 360 for a hand.

  20. DracoZereul says:

Ironically, at the opposite far end of the street where I lived there was a house that always had an icecream truck in the driveway, but we were lucky to get one icecream truck every year down where I used to live. The bright side, however, was that there was a park right across the street from the aforementioned house, not even a 5 minute bike ride from my house, that basically got an icecream truck every 30 minutes to an hour. If we wanted icecream, my friends and I would bum (or steal) a couple bucks from our parents and go to the park.

  21. The Dustin says:

I had specific Ice cream truck related skills at a younger age.
The Ice Cream truck was the one thing you could always count on your parents shelling out a couple bucks for. Even though it rarely visited our street (there were only 3 houses with kids on our street) I Always managed to catch the truck, even if I didn’t have money. I’d be playing with my friends and I’d go silent and have a strange look on my face. “do you hear that?” nobody else heard it, but I’d yell “Ice Cream Truck!” and book it to my house to rummage for money.
I once ran a mile to catch the truck, and he was coming from further away to my neighborhood and I managed to catch him halfway. I have supersonic hearing… but only for Ice Cream Truck music….

  22. no name says:

Did you mean to say “In the summertime?” Why does little Biff week have to be over? Maybe it’ll be a special double week!

  23. -2! says:

    @ Jake

Biff doesn’t actually have any copyright as far as i can tell. I would do that if i were Chris or people like me will have no reason not to make Biff merchandise and not buy yours. Actually that is the plain. I need to start preparing to make my Biff poster for myself, that i want for University!

Seriously though Chris I sent you an email about this before but if you make a Biff poster (say of a single comic but huge) i would buy it!

  24. Chris says:

@no name – Yes, when do you eat popsicles?

  25. -2! says:

@ Chris if you look at your blog post it says “I the summertime” not “In the summertime” which is the error no name is trying to point out…

I really need to leave this site for a few days, till monday maybe!

and yes I like to use the <i> tag!

  26. DTanza says:

@ -2 THOSE JERKS SHOT BIFF!

  27. tigerbitten says:

I don’t recall there ever being an ice cream truck in my neighborhood while growing up, but there was a produce truck that came through on the weekends. Living in Europe was AMAZING.

  28. Just Ryan says:

@ Jake, -2!: I was wondering when someone was going to mention Biff in LICD’s comic; more-so the fact that Biff gets shot along with everyone else in the 4/11/09 comic. Least I Could Do is one of my favorite story-based webcomics hands down.

  29. Trypno01 says:

I too saw Biff in LICD, but it seems Ryan Sohmer couldn’t quite get a handle on how to integrate Biff into the Crossover as we only see him like twice. Though it did seem quite the Biff style with the cd sticking out of his head.

  30. MadDavid says:

@ -2: In the U.S., all your creative work is born copyrighted. Adding a copyright symbol and registering it are useful if a dispute arises, but they are not necessary. If you can demonstrate your ownership, the law presumes you hold your copyright unless you explicitely release something to the public domain.

However, in the U.S., parody is protected under the Fair Use Act. I can’t redistribute Chris’s comics or use Biff in a “serious” work, but I could abscond with him for the express purpose of poking fun at the Book Of Biff webcartoon itself. Generally, people creating parody ask for permission, so that they don’t have to convince a jury that they are creating parody, but strictly speaking, it’s not necessary.

@DTanza, So? It’s not like he *killed* Biff or anything. Suck it up Biff! You’ve had worse.

  31. -2! says:

    @ MadDavid

I live in Canada… so its different here (i think)…

Chris do you mind if i make myself a Biff poster, the current design is an array of 6*7 Biff comics, including the by chris halbeck and thebookofbiff.com so it is not like I am not giving you credit for using your comics.

  32. 3 says:

dude i totally want eyebrows like biffs

  33. zhub89 says:

New reader (from #1 to #739)!
    Pure awesome! BIFF FTW!

This is me. Is this that you?

  34. Back in Minnesota, we used to see the ice cream truck about twice a year, in late August…now we’re in Florida, where we really need it, and it doesn’t stop anywhere near our street.

  35. TaintedRose says:

wait….you are supposed to break the twin stick ice lollies in half!?!?!
i just ate them as if it was one lolly…with an extra stick

  36. A-Code says:

Our icecreamtruck comes (for some idiotic reason) at 11pm… don’t know if someone is actually buying anything…
But I’m glad it only has a bell and not an annoying electronic tune. (my first gameboy even had better sound, because it didn’t repeat itself ALL THE TIME).
Anyways… the best icecreamtrucktune I’ve ever heard is probably the Smurfs-theme, too bad I was broke at that moment, surely would’ve bought anything from that one…

  37. -JAD- says:

I also thought at first it was some kind of sonic device, glad to see I wasn’t the only one…

Are we going to see more biff kid? Or maybe baby biff? Biffteen? Oldman Biff? Bifferella? Anibiff?

    🙂

    Great comic!
    This week was particulary amazing.

  38. Linzleh says:

Icecream crave can be strong, hoping that works for Biff when he tries to pull the Good Humor truck closer with his kiddo arms…

  39. Tuesday says:

    Oh my! Little Biff!!

  40. Radical Edward says:

Biff as a child is still entertaining. I wish for the ice cream man to stop by my house, even as an adult.

  41. Handgunman says:

I’m really lucky, because there are 3 ice cream trucks that stop right outside my school building just as i get out
