#720 – Augment

Every morning at work I go and fill my cup with hot water and take it back to my desk to make tea. I’m constantly spilling hot water on myself. The trick seems to be to not think about it and to not look at the cup while I’m walking back. I guess it makes sense that we are better at walking while looking forward rather than looking down. I’ve gotten used to the splashing… but I prefer the time when it spills over onto my hand rather than drip down my pant leg.

Another trick is not to fill the cup up to the brim…

Biff must be made of living clay that consumes ‘Comments’ to regrow.

Please contribute to his hand’s healthy return. Don’t do Drugs…. I mean Leave a Comment! … yeah.

Does this have anything to do with the rocket launch today? I just found it weird as I am in Florida for March Break (Canadian thing, I don’t know if you guys get a break) and I saw it live today.

Also, it took 6 hours to drive back to Orlando. It was terrible.

  4. Tasha says:

Personally, I’d like to see some debris from where his rocket hand punched through the wall. Maybe some dust? No? It must just be me then..

  5. The Dukenator says:

I thought Biff was pouring hot water on his pants.

guesses for this weeks theme: water, explosives, temperature/climate.

@Greenimp: Too soon! You can’t get a pattern from one strip.

I knew it! Biff’s related to MAZINGER Z! Wow those must be some family reunions…

    Majinga Zetoooo…*sings*

I’d take a wild guess in the direction of “cartoon-inspired body enhancements” on theme for the win, considering the word “Augment” there.

Mmmh…I wonder who else Biff’s related to…that we can guess from previous comics…mmmmh…

  13. So what happens if he jumps into a plunge pool? You know, the really cold water at some big swimming pools…

  14. Grug says:

*gasp!* Could this herald the return of the… GIANT ROBOT HAND????? That one’s my absolute favorite!

  15. Sir Lancelot says:

    @Grug…

That would make my year. I LOVED the giant robot hand.

Biff, Biff, Biff…you should know better than to pour boiling water on your hands…even IF they happen to be rockets.

  16. I laughed out loud. Thank you, Chris Hallbeck, for making my morning happy.

  17. Chris says:

@Howard – Thank you kind sir.

In response to the blog, I’ve always found a good technique for not spilling water (depending on the size of your hand and the rim) is to grip the cup or mug or glass around the rim and just let the cup hang down from your hand.

  23. I’ve broken two cups simply because I neglected to use the handle and the porcelain cup burned my hand when I filled it with hot liquids. By coincidence neither cup belonged to me, so I’ve only broken other peoples’ cups.

  24. Mophtran says:

    @Letsfoolgravity

    lol
A reminder: Hot cup is hot

It really is true that the trick is not to look at it. My mother taught me that, which she learned as a waitress. It’s mentally hard to refrain from looking, but gets easier as you get more confident that it helps you not spill. Someone once asked the worlds-highest-IQ lady Marilyn Vos Savant (in her column) about this, and she explained that when you look at the liquid, you are visually orienting your movements to the moving surface of the liquid, which makes you more unsteady than orienting your movements to your fixed surroundings.

  26. -2! says:

    The rocket hands are back!

  27. ZackDark says:

you didn’t need the world-highest-IQ to tell you that looking at the liquid makes you overcompensate its movements… it’s quite logical really, just like been on the balance beam, if you use your surrondings as guidance you don’t even need to stretch your arms out.

He’s a rock-it man. Burning out his fuse out here.

  29. Mike Chapman says:

Hee… this is my favorite Biff in a a while. I love how he’s looking off the panel. He almost looks interested.

  30. 8shazam8 says:

I find it much easier to look at the cup in order to not spill it. If I don’t look at the cup, I can’t tell if it’s close to spilling or not.

  31. Psymon says:

Same here; I walk steadily enough that sloshing isn’t the problem–it’s not having the cup level. I have to look at the cup. Or maybe I’m orienting the cup’s movement to the moving surface rather than my own movements. All I know is that I don’t have a problem with spilling my hot drinks, and when carrying them I look at the liquid.
