#715 – Soggy

I hated getting caught in the rain when I was a kid. Maybe because I wore glasses and it was hard to see through the water clinging to the lenses. About once a year though I was excited by the rain. I would be outside kicking a rock around when there would be a gradual rushing sound coming up behind me. I turn around to see a thick wall of rain slowly coming down the street. I didn’t actually want to get wet but it was always such a cool thing to see that I would stand there, frozen in anticipation of the mobile waterfall that was about to engulf me.

Very cool comment today. I agree, having glasses obstructed by rain is incredibly annoying.

Are we having a weather conditions week?

For one reason or another I found the blog post far more interesting than the comic this time.

Glasses never work well in rain…lovely visual that wall of rain, another fascinating phenomenon is rain on only one side of the street. As kids we’d be dancing in the drops or throwing grass seed on the lawn. Biff is quite cute with those soggy eyebrows.

mobile wtf? last time i had rain like that half of my neighbor’s house was torn apart by a tornado

  5. KeiMari says:

Got to admit, it’s been a while since I’ve experienced something like that. But I remember when I was little, we’d get rain so infrequently that when we finally did, all the kids would run out into the street after school to splash around before our parents bodily hauled us into the cars. We’d happily be sniffling the rest of the day.

Biff just needs a new origami instructor!

  7. Chrism says:

I always tried to outrun the rain myself…

Now, I always like the mini-whirlwinds you see in the fall that kicks up the leaves….

I’ve never seen that kind of rain. Get mostly the drizzly kind here in the Seattle area.

  9. Lisa says:

Here in Australia, the most wonderful weather I have experienced was pelting rain, as if i was in the middle of a really big storm, with the sun shining brightly and not a cloud in sight. It was so bright and yet raining! Words cannot adequately describe.

@Lisa: I’ve seen that, it’s so strange. Though usually in Adelaide we get lots of gloomy overcast-ness before rain. When it rained at my school, we had to turn all the lights on to be able to see – the light was at the same levels as late evening, at 10am. Afterwards it was all foggy and my friends and I joked that we were in Silent Hill.

This one hit me really hard today. Maybe it’s because my hair is very cold and wet–but as a result, I now desperately want a big ol’ rainstorm.

  12. Jackson says:

Paper airplanes in a rainstorm? Methinks this idea is…all wet.

(Jackson is gang-beaten by the internet before he can do the “ba-dum pchsh”)

  13. Kurast says:

The infamous “it’s raining over there but not over here!” happens often in Tornado-and-hurricane-visited Alabama

  14. MaskedMan says:

    @Lisa,
I’ve had that experience too, though it was more often hail from a coudless blue sky… Colorado is weird like that. Also got localized rain storms that you could walk right through – in one side, and out the other.

    @Chris,
    two things:
One – Go out to sea some time – Squalls are like that – a sunny day, and then a black cloud shows up, washes over you drenching everything, then it’s gone again, and it’s a sunny day.
Two – The Kaplan University advertisement is using popups that have managed to get past my popup blockers, and they’re locking up my computer. The usual error is “Out of memory at line 56.” You might want to talk to your advertiser about that… Popups suk.

I recall standing at the end of a long driveway awaiting the school bus. As the wall of rain came rushing down the road, I spun in a circle realizing I had no where to take cover. Naturally, as soon as the bus finally arrived the rain stopped and I plopped into my seat wet and irritated. Memories…

  16. I can outrun rain…on a bike.

Turning so I can get into the garage, however, still takes too long.

I like snow a lot better than rain. I wear a fleece jacket most of the time, so if it’s snowing (those big, fluffy snowflakes), I arrive looking like a yeti.

My mum’s had horizontal rain, it was so windy.

  19. Ikaelamay says:

I can fix those glasses! _Impervius!_

  20. Marr965 says:

Oh, god, we’ve got an HPN (Harry Potter nutter). Although, I quite like the books as well… Hmm, methinks there’s something wrong with my arguement…

  21. Marr965 says:

How come we never see Biff @ night, Chris?

  22. -2! says:

    @ Marr965
we do, go brows the archive

    @chris
I remember one time on a trip to Cedar Point we got the last ride on Millennium Force before they closed it due to an incoming thunderstorm. On our way back to the hotel (its on the peninsula) we saw the rain coming, and Ran… the people who got in just after us were soaked and we were completely dry 🙂

  23. -2! says:

Sorry for the double comment (i would edit but you can’t), but it just occurred to me, when i think of Chris i picture Biff, and i was thinking about Biff having glasses as a kid and Chris apparently no longer needing glasses.

  24. no name says:

Water’s adhesion to glass must really suck for those whom wear glasses. I’m glad I’ve dodged the bullet in my family, every other person in my family wears them.

  25. PsychoDuck says:

Probably my coolest experience involving rain would have to be one day when I was walking home from school years ago. It was raining hard, but I only had to cross the street to get home. I cross the street… And it isn’t raining. I look back, and there it is, still raining on the other side of the street, as if the road was stopping it from advancing. I’ve seen very few things since then as cool as that.

    The Duck Has Spoken.

  26. Eltharrion says:

For myself, we don’t get any hurricanes or anything here in northern Europe except “cyclones”, a small allmost everyday circling rain-fall (yes, you might have heard about place “finland”. And no, it’s neither in America nor Asia), but we do get some random-style rains.

One really good one was that I was driving across the whole country with my friend. It rained all the way, hard. When we got to the place, I jumped out and got to cover. Got also really wet. Waited for like, 10 seconds, and the rain stopped. I was quite frustrated…

  27. Even if he can fly it in between raindrops, it’s still gonna get soggy before he even launches it.

    I WANT BIFF’S SWEATER

  29. Sax` says:

The raincloud on Biff’s jacket looks out of place.

  30. Trypno01 says:

The only time I’ve ever seen/experienced a wall of rain moving down the sidewalk like that was back in ’06 in South Carolina. I was in Basic Training from April to June and we got hit by a tropical storm right near the end of may.

  31. Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos says:

    That jacket is adorable.

  32. Marscaleb says:

I have never seen this “mobile waterfall” thing before… Now I really want to!
