#643 – Void

Mashed potatoes are one of my favorite parts of family get-togethers. I’m usually stressed that I won’t get enough. If I can, I try to get the first scoop so that I can leisurely graze the rest of the choices. What is your favorite dish from your big holiday gathering?

Lakatuberphobia, nice one. So what, this is fears week, then?

    The Duck Has Spoken.

  2. ScottMGS says:

I had a little book when I was a kid (a *long* time ago) by Maurice Sendak that had a page with some kids dancing around a bowl of mashed potatoes with big spoons. The caption was “Mashed potatoes are so everyone can have enough.”

  3. linuxexorcist says:

with roast beef it’s yorkshire pudding (google it)with turkey it’s a tie between mashed taters and gravy, with ham it’s well, ham, as with everything, dibs on the leftovers for breakfast!

  4. kevin says:

I wonder what Biff’s family get-togethers look like.

  5. Gotta be buttercup squash or mashed rutabaga (yellow turnip) with some oil and salt.

  6. Moose says:

CRANBERRY SAUCE! Seriously. Every meal needs more of it. In fact, the purpose of the original meal becomes questionable when cranberry sauce is added to the equation.

Also, my first post. Your comic is made of equal parts win and awesome.

  7. JippenFaddoul says:

My favorite is green bean casserole. Yummy semi-crunchy goodness.

  8. Pieman says:

Mash-wise, I like it really, really cheesy. Grate cheese into the mash, and just before you cook it, smother the top in cheese. The cheese melts over it, and the mash tastes amazing.

  9. Ryan says:

    Mmmm…yams.

  10. Colin says:

My favorite is at christmas time when we go to my grandmothers house she quite often makes a dish called Sarma, it is a Bosnian dish that is always Tastey i always make sure to eat more of them than i can handle, if case you wanted to know it is a Wad of pork mince with rice and all sorts of veggies in there whatever you want, with a Pickled Cabbage wrapping boiled in water that has all sorts of meat inside… mouth watering good.

  11. Samsa says:

Pumpkin Pie! seriously, you give me pumpkin pie i will eat so much of it so fast, whole slices in 1-2 bites it’s the MOST unladylike thing you’ve ever seen!

  12. speearr says:

    OH nice one!

My big holiday favourite… I dunno. I like em all. I’m not choosy when it comes to food. So Biff’s fav is mashed potatoes eh? I once overdosed on a pack of instant mashed potatoes, the kind where u just add water…

  13. JB says:

My favourite has always been Shepherd’s Pie.. Basically a savory mince dish with mashed potato on top.. I always liked to add cheese, then grill it till it goes crispy crunchy.. Kinda like Pieman up there 😉

@speearr, did you have the straight powder?

  14. Book of Biff is just getting better every week…

  15. RG says:

My personal favorite happens to be any sort of meat and bread related dish. Not much care on what it is, as long as it’s not spicy or has fish or too many vegetables. By the way, meals are very random here.

  16. steve-o says:

Looks like Biff’s eyebrows are frightened too. Or maybe they have a cold. That would certainly be an interesting sneeze.

  17. Tia says:

I’m all about the sweet potatos. Yummay.

  18. mac says:

mashed pototoes, buts dish by far

  19. Silversaraph says:

My mom always make’s turkey meatballs, because three of us refuse to eat beef (because of the destruction to the environment). She usually just puts us outside, opens the door when it’s time to eat and yells “go” and we rush in and try to stab as many as we can…

  20. starseedjenny says:

Mashed potatoes with my mother’s turkey gravy

    MmmmmmmmMMMMMMmmmmmmmmMMMMMMm

  21. Knight Blazer says:

Have to go with the desserts. My aunt makes this one blueberry concoction; I couldn’t tell you for the life of me what it’s called or what exactly is in it, but it is heavenly. The best i could tell you about what’s in it is pie crust for the base, cream cheese (i think), then some kind of blueberry jelly pie filling with blueberries, pineapple, and god knows what else, more cream cheese, whipped cream, and the drizzled with walnut chunks. My family has been known to literally get into fistfights over this dessert. On top of that, she refuses to give the recipe to anybody 🙁
    God I love the Holidays.

  22. Matthew says:

Well we don’t have thanksgiving in Germany… we have other events, but by far the biggest is Christmas eve. We do things differently.
We get Kassler (smoked pork chops) and Mettenden (specific sausage), but most importantly cale (or is it kale?). It’s something many people don’t know, because on it’s own, it tastes awful, but when prepared with the right amount of potatoes, it is the most amazing thing you will ever have.
It’s sort of like mash as well.

There’s other stuff that we eat with that, but those are the important things.

I should note however that different families have different traditions in Germany, especially Christmas.

  23. mr toast says:

jellied cranberry sauce…not the disgusting kind with whole cranberries in it, the kind that is completely jellied. and mashed potatoes.and of course the turkey is a must.

  24. Twilightfairy says:

screw the turkey bring on the pork!

  25. no name says:

Does that include desserts? Because if it does, my favorite thanksgiving food is pumpkin pie. If it doesn’t include desserts, same, mashed potatoes.

  26. HayleyJ says:

i love cranberry sauce, not the gross stuff from the can. Its served cold and what you do is in a food processor mix cranberries, vanilla, sugar and orange…its HEAVENLY!

as for desserts: I have to go with pistachio pudding! mixed with cool whip and marshmallows and pineapple and almonds…its delicious!

  27. Foxhound2 says:

Wow and i really don’t like mashed potatoes, but i love me some homemade sweet potatoe pie!!!

  28. Ralf says:

Fried Turkey cutlets with Buraczki (polish family’s beet & horseradish dressing, used like cranberry sauce). Oh sweet lord, I usually only get to eat that at Canadian Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

  29. Stacy says:

CHEESEY POTATOES!!!! OMG deliciousness =O! I love them so much, my family now calls them “Stacy Potatoes.” The’re diced potatoes and cheese and more cheese and CHEEEEEESEEEEE and baked. Yup. Baked…I guess if you add ham, they’re Au Gratin Potatoes. WHATEVS DUDE.

  30. i.half4 says:

    Lakatuberphobia. Hah!

I hope I remember that one the next time I watch Lucy play psychiatrist in A Charlie Brown Christmas.

  31. Ryan says:

Stuffing. Lots and lots of stuffing.

  32. CaliforniaPants says:

    Bread,as much as possible

  33. Domino says:

Either the baked ziti or lasagna my mom made. We had one at Thanksgiving, the other at Christmas. Brings back the memories just thinking about it 😀

  34. Katiroth says:

Black olives with cream cheese stuffed in them. Truly the best dish imaginable. Even though I hated olives as a kid.

  35. i come anon says:

i agree with moose. Cranberry sauce for the win!

It’s like crack for people who are smart enough to stay away from drugs! (that is most of the population, including myself).
Unfortunately, everything tastes weird after eating it.
    Such a shame.

  36. Eleanor says:

OOoh, roast potatoes and vegetarian gravy, and the best bit of the turkey. *sigh* Christmas dinner wouldn’t be the same without the family though, that’s what makes it fun! (that and pigs in blankets, those little things are muy awesome!)

  37. random person says:

What’s the word for the fear of 50 relatives coming and taking all your food like bears.

  38. Good choice for a Thanksgiving comic. I love mashed potatoes.

  39. the_gail says:

Mashed potato is my favorite. I’m always very sad when, like this year, there aren’t enough for me to have seconds.

  40. Gadora says:

I’m all about the ‘taters unless there are warm biscuits.

  41. Fafnir13 says:

I love the medley of the Thanksgiving feast. Turky with gravy and mashed potatoes with gravy with a nice pile of stuffing and sweet potatoes with big glass of milk. I can eat anyone of those separately well enough, but it’s only when they are on one plate that it becomes something of dreams.

  42. Speakerblast says:

I usually let my whole family have mashed potatos first so I can take as many as I want without being impolite to the needs of others.

    It works suprisingly well.

  43. reynard61 says:

Stuffing! It’s all about the stuffing! Om nom nom…

  44. DracoZereul says:

Gotta be Heavenly Hashbrowns. It’s a family recipe we’ve had every Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner since as far back as I can remember. Essentially, it’s hash browns with cheese, onions, a little cream of mushroom, I think, and topped with seasoned bread crumbs. Hotter than hell when you take the first bite whether you give it five or fifty minutes to cool, but oh so delicious both fresh and as leftovers. We always make a huge batch to enjoy for at least a week.

  45. Kevin says:

man, don’t even joke like that. no mashed potatoes? that’s madness, i tell you!

  46. Halo Chief says:

    me too.

  47. AdmiralChaos says:

I just realized that we didn’t have mashed potatoes for this Thanksgiving 🙁 but, on the bright side, we did have sweet potatoes 😀

  48. Simeon. says:

My favorite dish would have to be Sex in a Pan.

  49. Rampage says:

I can’t believe no one said cornbread! (Or maybe someone did, I just couldn’t find it.) My favorite foods would have to be cornbread and cranberry fluff. And I find this ironic, I don’t think there are actually any cranberries in the fluff. There’s grapes, and walnuts, and all this other deliciousness.

  50. Lemonbread says:

Stuffing. We have both in the bird stuffing and stovetop stuffing for Thanksgiving. Amazing.

  51. Olly says:

Oh gosh, I could never handle Mashed Potato as a kid. The texture of it made me gag every time I tried to eat it. I was very picky as a kid.

I think my childhood experiences have put me off M.P for life. D:

  52. Zack says:

    I have that fear

    there isn’t a cure

  53. Manfred says:

I have lakafizzlephobia: fear of missing soda.

  54. Nokore says:

Stuffing. Homemade mashed potatoes. Deviled eggs. Homemade cheesey-bread. And I will be a happy girl. Screw the turkey.

  55. Radical Edward says:

Stuffing. It’s pretty much the only thing I will eat since I don’t like turkey (I was forcefed turkey by a mean teacher). Matter of fact, screw the turkey. I eat stuffing every year, so you’re probably gonna need more.

  56. Kelly says:

    Stuuuuuuffing!!!
Why haven’t more ppl said this?!
It’s my fav, and my whole family’s fav… which makes it very hard to get enough of it : /

  57. maxsteele2 says:

    Cheesy scalloped potatoes.

  58. figgyleaf says:
