#642 – Tickle

My freshman year at SCAD I lived in an apartment that was frequented by cockroaches. We tried to make ourselves feel better by calling them “waterbugs.” The worst moment was one night when I had left some trash in my bedroom with food residue on it. I was woken up by the sound of chewing. I never took food into my bedroom ever again.

I once lived in an apartment like that, with the bugs…

  2. Heinrich says:

lawl. i’m not sure why but that amuses me more than a lot of the other recent comics (which is saying something).

  3. Chris says:

@Heinrich – Each comic was written with a specific reader in mind, today was your day!

  4. Sciuridae says:

This one’s definitely great. Dunno if the fact that it came in my way while I listened to Lullaby makes it even better, but I’m enjoying it a lot.

  5. brickface says:

This reminds me of when I scared my sister with a fake spider, she jumped, hit her head on the ceiling, substaned a minor concussion. I was apologizing to her for two months.

  6. Fafnir13 says:

It was ants crawling on my face at some random AM. Well, just one ant. I’ve hated the little buggers and their infestacious ways ever since.

  7. Colin says:

in a room so quiet you can here roaches chewing.

  8. ryos says:

I once woke up to the sensation of something biting my thumb (my hands were crossed on my chest). I’m almost certain it was a mouse. That thumb was sore for days afterwards.

  9. Charlotte says:

When I was younger I used to keep old crisp packets in what was supposed to be a waste paper bin- until the day we saw a huge line of ants crawling down the hall, into my room and straight for my bin- mum was not amused!

  10. Nathan says:

I’m glad the only animals that ever wake me up in bed are cats and humans!

    @Charlotte:
I thought I was pretty good at parsing the British dialect until I saw the phrase “crisp packets”, and I was stumped for a minute. Odd.

  11. RG says:

I only have bloodsucking mosquitoes. You guys have it good…

  12. Jake says:

*has actually woken up, walked to bathroom, and seen a small spider crawling across his face*

    major creeping out did ensue.

  13. MaskedMan says:

@brickface; one of my older sister did that to another older sister. There was blood. And screaming. And vengance.

@Chris; In Florida, the ‘water bugs’ are the size of Buicks – they get their own special lane in traffic. Seriously now, they get so big that you can *hear* them walking.

  14. angusgangus says:

Once I was camping, and there was a mosquito buzzing around the tent. That was annoying, but then it decided to dive-bomb into my ear. I was freaking out and trying to dig bug-bits out of my ear at 2 a.m. Woke the whole family. I hate camping…

  15. karmastar says:

I WENT TO SCAD ALSO! haha. I’m sure I’ve probably responded like that before, but can’t remember doing so! I did 5 years[2degrees] and work in town here. Love the comic! it’s a *must* every morning to start my day at the cubicle…lol

  16. Thane of Eurmal says:

@MaskedMan; I lived in Taiwan for 11 years, and same thing: huge ‘roaches. I know the sound of them walking. And flying… One hit me in the head while riding my scooter @ 35 mph.

@RG; and mosquitoes. I remember killing 12 by hand one night – kept me up for hours. Every time I’d turn off the lights, that whine was back. Yeeargh!

But I think Biff’s is the worst. You feel something that’s not really there, then spend the next hour wondering if it was real and phantom sensing more.

Nah, maybe not worse than the roaches. I was told they were hardy creatures, so the first time I found one the size of my thumb in my room, I rolled a newspaper and SMACK!!! pieces of him everywhere. Yuck.

  17. Thane of Eurmal says:

It’s his eyebrows really. No spiders – those things would tickle!

  18. Missa says:

I really suspected I was the only one with one of these alarms .. the worst is when someone is laying beside you and it goes off lol ..

  19. And in that position within two and a half seconds of waking up.

  20. Sarah says:

I used to dream that there were spiders in my bed and flip out as i was waking up. I once made it all the way downstairs screaming before i really woke up. It was like 2 am. My roommate and his gf on the couch didn’t know what to think lol.

  21. thinkaboutit says:

haha i need to get one of those alarms just so i can prank my family with it ^^

  22. Anthony says:

I grew up in a house out in a rural area, so there were always bugs and mice making their way inside. Once, when I was very young, I awoke to the feeling of something on my face. Instinctively I jerked my head and then heard something “thwack” on the far wall. Ever since that night I have had to cover the side of my face with my sheets whenever I sleep.

  23. fluffy says:

The whole freaking city of Las Cruces, NM is constantly overrun by cockroaches and black widows. I lived there for 8 years. I never did develop an adequate roach tolerance.

  24. Gadora says:

Try waking to a slug. *shudder*

  25. GL says:

I once had an infestation of rats… guess what creature was sitting on MY face when I woke up

  26. Foxhound2 says:

    Now that funny, Chris!!

  27. Foxhound2 says:

It’s odd how biff is but it a great alarm. My brother need that… he sleeps in to much.(change picture@first post)

  28. Zaffa says:

Oh yeah, this is definitely phobia week. Fear of the dark(forgot the name), acrophobia, arachnophobia…

  29. Speakerblast says:

The worst ive ever really woken up to is my cat.

But she was just staring at me while i slept, so it was still kinda creepy.

  30. speearr says:

    I don’t understand people who fear spiders….. now cockroaches….

  31. Chris says:

Rats used to scamper around in the ceiling of my room when I was a kid and kept me up countless nights and caused me countless nightmares. I’d been happy if it was just a few cockroaches.

  32. Foxhound2 says:

    @Colin- Thats surprising,but weird.

  33. Twilightfairy says:

We had bed bugs in our dorm.

And used to have roaches in our house. Now all we have is one annoying mouse that refuses to die. Cheeky little..

    Biff looks warm, although uncomfortable.

  34. Wizard says:

I was woken up by a possum in my room once, but at least it wasn’t on me. Still not sure how it got in…

One thing that creeps me out is finding a dead millipede when I change the sheets on my bed. I mean, that proves that one of them was on my bed, so who knows how many more might have been? Roaches and spiders are bad enough, but millipedes just really creep me out. Nothing needs that many legs.

Nathan – “crisps” is Brit-speak for what we Yanks call potato chips. As someone or other once said, the US and the UK are two countries divided by a common language…

  35. JB says:

Oh man… BAD BAD memories… I remember being woken up by a wolf spider walking over my face… The spider was about 2-3cm across (an inch for those backward nations who use the imperial system :P). If I feel something on my face, I HAVE to see what it was. I’ll get up, turn on the lights and search my entire room if I have to. I then fail to go back to sleep, from the huge adrenaline rush that’s often enough to have me sitting and shaking and trying vainly to slow my breathing and heartbeat down again for half an hour or so.

One other time I had a cockroach running up my spine when I was staying at a friend’s house.. I just thought that it was my imagination, or a hair springing back to it’s natural position. But it kept moving up.. so I reached and then threw the cockroach across the room and only just managed not to shout…

Chris, you chose a topic that’s close to my heart..

  36. Wolf Spiders, Fire Ants. 😀

  37. Lisa says:

    yuck lots of legs.

  38. Mophtran says:

Oh, it just registered with me… My boyfriend’s sister is a SCAD grad… Graphic Design, no less.

  39. wisp says:

@masked man; oh jeez that reminds me of the june bugs we used to get back in jasper mo. they were so big and numerous when you went driving to the store it would sound like you were in a giant bowl of rice crispies XP

  40. MrD says:

How would Biff tell that he had a spider on his face?

  41. Gwid says:

    …Is Biff’s eyebrow looking…kind of… rigid to anyone else?
