#641 – Vertigo

Sometimes I think fear of heights should just be called common sense. I believe I have a fairly standard fear of heights. What freaks me out the most is looking over the edge of a tall building. Fortunately I don’t find myself in that situation very often barring the occasional superhero movie.

I have a very very VERY sensitive fear of heights.
I look down from 2 or 3 meters and i start getting dizzy

  2. Zaffa says:

    Dun-Dun-DAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!

  3. Zaffa says:

    Oh, Phobia Week.

  4. Shorty says:

Since when is Biff afraid of heights? He’s been in space. That’s as high as you get.

  5. Gary says:

I was thinking weird perspectives week, but phobia week makes more sense.

  6. TomTom says:

I actually possess almost no fear of heights. It’s weird, walk along a rickety bridge over a bottomless gorge, I’m fine, make me climb to the top of a wobbley pole and then jump off, I’m fine, lead me into the path of a bee, I run like my pants were on fire.

  7. The Dustin says:

I like how it was put in a book I read once,
“I’m not afraid of heights, I’m afraid of grounds…..I’m not being stupid, it’s the Ground that kills you”

  8. nod_buggy says:

I can’t tell where the focus is! weird. Really cool though.

  9. Colin says:

    Nice Crotch shot of Biff

  10. Sven says:

@The Dustin: I’ve heard it described similarly. It’s not a fear of heights, it’s fear of falling, which is perfectly rational. 🙂

    (I’m not afraid of heights)

  11. starseedjenny says:

I am so scared of heights.

And also, before I even saw the comic title I was kind of like, “enggggg vertigooo”

  12. Kurast says:

I have an odd way about it.

If there’s no way that I can prevent death from falling (example: if my airline from seattle to nashville just drops out of the sky or some such), then I’m perfectly fine. But if the fall is A) My fault or B) has the ability for me to change the injuries or prevent falling all the way, then I’m freaked out.

  13. That…looks very…uncomfortable.

  14. MaskedMan says:

    Zaffa broke the code.

@Shorty; Phobic fear of heights often requires a frame of reference to trigger – Being in space doesn’t “feel” like being very high, so it doesn’t trigger the phobia. Ditto flying in aircraft at high altitude. I’ve got a moderate fear of heights, and flying at any height over about 1500 feet leaves me untouched, no matter *what* the aircraft is doing. Strong maneuvers below that altitude, where I can see parts of the aircraft in relationship to the ground, have me looking for a parachute. At still lower altiudes, even gentle banks, if the wingtip dips below the horizon, make my toes curl.

  15. thinkaboutit says:

im not afraid of heights im afraid of depths…

  16. Ikaelamay says:

    Yay, fear week!
I’m not very afraid of heights…I don’t think. I’m afraid of small, enclosed spaces. 🙁

  17. AOEUD says:

Fear of heights is natural, and makes good sense. A phobia of heights, however, is an irrationally extreme fear of heights. If you’re safe, but high, there should no worry.

  18. Wizard says:

    Oh, no! Biffzilla!

    Sorry, couldn’t resist that.

  19. Chamberino says:

    @The Dustin
If i’m not mistaken, that was said by Rincewind of the Discworld series, by Terry Pratchett. Oh, and this is my first comment. For some reason i’ve never posted before, although I have been reading for a while. I just want to say how great Biff is, and how he brings a smile to my face each day. Thank you, Chris.

  20. i.half4 says:

@ Wizard: Thank you for not resisting. Now I can enjoy this one in a whole new light. With soundtrack! Whoo Hooo!

    (who doesn’t know that sound)

  21. Vicky says:

Damn I love this one! the perspective is great and the whole thing really put a smile on my face. Best one for a long time, definitely.

  22. Foxhound2 says:

    Wow… thats funny!!!!

  23. Foxhound2 says:

This kinda reminds me at the condo we were staying at. I think we were on the 23 or 25 floor. I hated it until i started wacthing the construction site… it like hypnotized me.

  24. Speakerblast says:

Haha, this reminds me of a funny story!

I live in Mississauga, which is basically Toronto except not really. So in grade 9 my geography class went on a field trip to the CN tower.

So eventually we were at the part of the tower where they have a glass floor, and my friends and I are pretty good with heights, so we decided to take out my cell phone, put on the mexican hat dance ringtone, and have some fun.

Well the funniest part was some tourist videotaped the whole thing, I just hope it hasn’t snuck onto youtube or anything…

*searches CN tower dance on youtube*

    Nope, not there YET

  25. no name says:

Doesn’t vertigo mean dizziness? What does that have to do with being a giant?

  26. Dodom says:

Whether I’m afraid of falling depends on what’s going on in my head at the time. There’s been times I did reckless things like climbing down a cliff for no reason and halfway found myself stuck, thought “Hey, I’m going to die!” then climbed back up without much worries. But I can be afraid of jumping from the height of a chair if there’s something pointy on the ground.

  27. Chris says:

@no name – Imagine the comic from Biff’s perspective.

  28. Speakerblast says:

wow, I just noticed… Biff’s eyebrows are huge!

Just kidding, but they are particularily big in this one :p

  29. Psymon says:

I wonder if there’s a name for the fear of falling—particularly the sensation of falling—so a person could be out on a glass platform overlooking the grand canyon without any problems at all, but completely panics in the car if the road dips too sharply.

  30. wisp says:

this comic reminds me of my reaction to people saying ” he died jumping off his roof” which i always think “no jumping off didnt kill him its usually the sudden stop at the bottom” am i morbid for thinking thats funny?

  31. Calvin says:

I’m not afraid of heights, falling, or landing. I’m afraid of being hurt at the end. 🙂

  32. YukiSnowflake says:

    @TheDustin
I also read something like this in a book.
It was something like “she wasn’t scared of heights. she could look up without being scared. she was actually scared of great DEPTHS.”
it dfoesnt say that word for word, but if it WAS, youd have to have half the book before it to explain.

  33. YukiSnowflake says:

    @wisp
well, i find that funny, so im not sure. what does morbid mean, again?

  34. Mags says:

My fear of heights elevated from when I fell off the monkey bars and hit my head. Even a foot off the ground makes me shaky and I need to be near my mom or dad if I get any higher or feel high off the ground.
