I wonder what kids were fascinated with a few hundred years ago. Did they dream about riding horses or sailing boats? When I was little, cars were an obsession for most of the boys I knew. We played with Hotwheels, matchbox, slot car and radio controlled versions. We played a lot of computer driving games as well. When I drove a real car for the first time I was amazed at how similar it was to the video games I had been playing. Things haven’t changed much. Now when I get home from work each day my 9-month-old son likes to sit on the couch with me and watch the cars drive by our house.

I use the good old bicycle get’s me around in this freaking town.

I was always obsessed with military vehicles, myself. Normal cars, not being able to blow things up, just seemed too…pedestrian. Now it’s $8K bikes. Bicycles, not motorcycles.
But doesn’t something need to move to have any mileage? How does that work?
Also: it seems that discussions periodically pop up about how much of X item Biff has. Should this count towards his total number of cars?

My brother and I once built a Hot Wheels track so big that we ran out of track and had to make more out of shoe boxes and packing tape.

I remember riding boxes down the stairs in my house when I was a kid. Boxes were the best but sleeping bags worked well too. It’s really a miracle me and my brothers never broke any bones.

Yes to tobogganing down flights of stairs in cardboard boxes. My family had an old boxspring in the basement that me and my siblings would bounce on all the time. We’d also drag it to the base of the stairs, climb up seven or eight steps and hurl ourselves onto the mattress. And no, none of us ever broke any bones either.
About the gas mileage, we have a 0/0 indetermination here XD
I remember reading a part of an ancient Finn saga where a kid got bullied at a ball game, went to his father… and helped him kill the bully O_O
I made a cardboard spaceship once. I wondered why it didn’t take off LOL.
I had a girlfriend who’s toddler son LOVED being pushed around the living room in a box – He had this incredible laugh that was addictive – I’d push him around for hours, before collapsing in an exhausted heap. Funny thing… the kid never wore out.
i know biff has a rocket ship already, but if he turns his car on it’s side, and biff can get into space way cheaper than the upcoming ‘space vacations’
this comic reminded me of Calvin ‘n Hobbes’ transmogrifier. great stuff.

Oh, no doubt the sprout was pushing my buttons hard. He was always good for that. Much nicer kid than his mother turned out to be.
Oh, and good point about the rocket. Plus, once he’s in space, he can turn the box upside down, and it’ll make a nifty space station, too!
My two year old nephew loves Cars ™. Like seriously it’s his favorite thing.

I used to love those old slot cars. I’ve still got a few of them, and they’re quite fun to mess about with once in a while. They’re the really old ’60s ones without magnets, so they come off the track a lot.

I never liked cars as a kid. I had one that I got from a happy meal that I liked, and that was really the only toy car i had.
I liked to read as a baby.
My friend had a similar thing with the video games, one of the first times he drove, he was driving the family’s minivan up a canyon. he said he was super nervous until his dad said “it’s just like those video games you play.” and that calmed him down. I told him it would have made me freak out more because ” But in those games I always hit the side and explode!”
I remember from Tom Sawyer how the kids pretended to be paddwheel steamboat (crews), and pirates

Are you referring to the Ideal Motorific cars? I had some of those as a kid. (Rather expensive to use since they went through batteries pretty quickly.) I was also a Hot Wheels/Hot Birds* fan, but eventually preferred to go into plastic modeling. (Mostly aircraft.)
*A smaller line of die-cast aircraft.

I remember played in boxes as a kid, I had this set of boxes that my mom helped me cut up and make into a small fort of tunnels that could be taken apart and put back together in different ways. Sadly, the boxes got so worn that they tore and eventually had to be thrown away…

I used to love spaceships. I was one of the kids that was considered for gifted and advanced classes, so I’d tilt my desk onto the back and pretend to be an astronaut.
Reynard: nope, mine are Scalextric. It’s very hard to find slot cars that aren’t Scalextric here in the UK.

God thanks driving cars did not turn out to be like racing games. I really suck at racing games, but am a good driver. OK, the race games I knew were running on a 486 and early Pentiums 😉
if i drove on the road like i drive in video games the chances of me being in jail for vehicular manslaughter would be likely. I’ve played way too much Grand Theft Auto. I did grow up on the Hot Wheels diet, and I have the majority of them still.
100 years ago, like my dad says he would be the best at if around back then, would be shooting bad guys that have robbed the local saloon or something. oh wait, that’s 200 years ago? screw it, He’d still be doing that.

I always hated the little car playsets. You HAD to buy hotwheels cars with hotwheels playsets. Couldn’t use matchbox with hot wheel NOOOOO, you HAD to have hotwheels. I think I always checked under the car to see if I could play with this car on this playset… it’s like some evil conspiracy.
Manholes. I used to love them as a little kid. I guess I thought they were mysterious. I knew all manholes in the neighborhood and could tell if it’s sewage or utility water pipes by the sound they made.
