#609 – Corrugated

I wonder what kids were fascinated with a few hundred years ago. Did they dream about riding horses or sailing boats? When I was little, cars were an obsession for most of the boys I knew. We played with Hotwheels, matchbox, slot car and radio controlled versions. We played a lot of computer driving games as well. When I drove a real car for the first time I was amazed at how similar it was to the video games I had been playing. Things haven’t changed much. Now when I get home from work each day my 9-month-old son likes to sit on the couch with me and watch the cars drive by our house.

Oh good god, this makes me smile all over.

  2. Hezzu says:

But Chris have you stopped dreaming about fast cars and luxury vehicles or do you actually drive one?

I use the good old bicycle get’s me around in this freaking town.
    but I haven’t stoppped dreaming πŸ˜€

  3. SharkJumper says:

    Biff needs some racing goggles!

I was always obsessed with military vehicles, myself. Normal cars, not being able to blow things up, just seemed too…pedestrian. Now it’s $8K bikes. Bicycles, not motorcycles.

  4. Torg says:

But doesn’t something need to move to have any mileage? How does that work?

Also: it seems that discussions periodically pop up about how much of X item Biff has. Should this count towards his total number of cars?

    1. Icalasari says:

      It’s Biff

It probably goes at the speed of light

  5. LazerWulf says:

My brother and I once built a Hot Wheels track so big that we ran out of track and had to make more out of shoe boxes and packing tape.

  6. Jack Hollow says:

Hey! Biff has the same car as me! cool! (mine has flames on the side though.)

  7. Chris says:

I remember riding boxes down the stairs in my house when I was a kid. Boxes were the best but sleeping bags worked well too. It’s really a miracle me and my brothers never broke any bones.

  8. SEA says:

    Nice vote incentive =D

Ah yes, i think i really fancied those toy cars back then ^_^

  9. speearr says:

I missed Biff for a week and came back to find something that made me really laugh. Good work, Chris!

  10. Kree says:

    TRAINS! πŸ˜€

Also postal services, doors, portals, and generaly any delivery/transportation system known to man. I don’t know why, but I really like systems of travel πŸ˜› A cake to anyone who can guess my favourite PC game πŸ˜€

…except cars, not really fond of cars. D: (caveat: Bond’s spy car, KITT, etc.)

  11. Torg says:

    @Kree: Railroad Tycoon?

  12. Yes to tobogganing down flights of stairs in cardboard boxes. My family had an old boxspring in the basement that me and my siblings would bounce on all the time. We’d also drag it to the base of the stairs, climb up seven or eight steps and hurl ourselves onto the mattress. And no, none of us ever broke any bones either.

  13. Fred says:

About the gas mileage, we have a 0/0 indetermination here XD
I remember reading a part of an ancient Finn saga where a kid got bullied at a ball game, went to his father… and helped him kill the bully O_O
I made a cardboard spaceship once. I wondered why it didn’t take off LOL.

  14. MaskedMan says:

I had a girlfriend who’s toddler son LOVED being pushed around the living room in a box – He had this incredible laugh that was addictive – I’d push him around for hours, before collapsing in an exhausted heap. Funny thing… the kid never wore out.

  15. benjiroo says:

i know biff has a rocket ship already, but if he turns his car on it’s side, and biff can get into space way cheaper than the upcoming ‘space vacations’

this comic reminded me of Calvin ‘n Hobbes’ transmogrifier. great stuff.

@maskedman: kinda makes you wonder who’s pushing who around

  16. Ian says:

I wonder how a carboard box moves around, besides being pushed. Maybe good old Flinstone style with the legs comming out of the bottom.

  17. MaskedMan says:

    @benjiroo;
Oh, no doubt the sprout was pushing my buttons hard. He was always good for that. Much nicer kid than his mother turned out to be.

Oh, and good point about the rocket. Plus, once he’s in space, he can turn the box upside down, and it’ll make a nifty space station, too!

  18. Twilightfairy says:

My two year old nephew loves Cars ™. Like seriously it’s his favorite thing.

Biff’s car runs on Imagination, i love it!

…now i want an awesome box.

  19. Bakelite says:

I used to love those old slot cars. I’ve still got a few of them, and they’re quite fun to mess about with once in a while. They’re the really old ’60s ones without magnets, so they come off the track a lot.

  20. Gato says:

    Calvin and Hobbs anyone?

    πŸ˜€

  21. Cpt.Ziggy says:

@kree-is it that portal game from the half-life people?you know the one with the companion cube.

  22. no name says:

Biff brings me daily joy. I really wish I could have Biff on weekends.

  23. Tenko says:

@kree The cake is a lie. πŸ˜€ Also, everyone loves pie. Love the comic. Reminds me of all the fun I had w/ cardboard boxes. Forts, stair-sleds, wrestling mats, tunnel mazes. Good times. Good times.

  24. Genesismonk says:

I never liked cars as a kid. I had one that I got from a happy meal that I liked, and that was really the only toy car i had.

I liked to read as a baby.

  25. The Dustin says:

My friend had a similar thing with the video games, one of the first times he drove, he was driving the family’s minivan up a canyon. he said he was super nervous until his dad said “it’s just like those video games you play.” and that calmed him down. I told him it would have made me freak out more because ” But in those games I always hit the side and explode!”

  26. Josher says:

I remember from Tom Sawyer how the kids pretended to be paddwheel steamboat (crews), and pirates

  27. Speakerblast says:

I would totally STILL play in boxes if I wasn’t 5’11” and not flexable at all.

  28. Zaffa says:

Oh wow, it gets excellent mpg AND it`s biodegradable! It`s like the perfect green car! =D

  29. randomperson says:

I’m like 5 feet, and I can still fit inside a locker.

  30. Reynard says:

Bakelite: “They’re the really old ’60s ones without magnets, so they come off the track a lot.”

Are you referring to the Ideal Motorific cars? I had some of those as a kid. (Rather expensive to use since they went through batteries pretty quickly.) I was also a Hot Wheels/Hot Birds* fan, but eventually preferred to go into plastic modeling. (Mostly aircraft.)

*A smaller line of die-cast aircraft.

  31. FSOneblin says:

I don’t know what they did 100s of years ago, I will ask my grampa

  32. Speakerblast says:

The lockers in my school have shelves, i cant fit πŸ™

  33. Chezetoats says:

Holy cow, Chris! Your just making me want to post a lot this week! This comic is a pure stroke of genius, it has been a long time since I have laughed this hard! Keep up the good work!

I remember played in boxes as a kid, I had this set of boxes that my mom helped me cut up and make into a small fort of tunnels that could be taken apart and put back together in different ways. Sadly, the boxes got so worn that they tore and eventually had to be thrown away…

  34. Kurast says:

    GENIUS!

I used to love spaceships. I was one of the kids that was considered for gifted and advanced classes, so I’d tilt my desk onto the back and pretend to be an astronaut.

  35. Bakelite says:

Reynard: nope, mine are Scalextric. It’s very hard to find slot cars that aren’t Scalextric here in the UK.

  36. I’m imagining him making silly driving sounds with his mouth. Funny.

  37. Vidja says:

Biff, you made my return to school somewhat bearable.

  38. no name says:

Chris, how does one see the biffatars?

  39. no name says:

It keeps saying that I clicked the incorrect title, or that I clicked the correct one, but it still won’t let me through.

  40. sic says:

God thanks driving cars did not turn out to be like racing games. I really suck at racing games, but am a good driver. OK, the race games I knew were running on a 486 and early Pentiums πŸ˜‰

  41. Ryan says:

if i drove on the road like i drive in video games the chances of me being in jail for vehicular manslaughter would be likely. I’ve played way too much Grand Theft Auto. I did grow up on the Hot Wheels diet, and I have the majority of them still.

  42. jykcor says:

100 years ago, like my dad says he would be the best at if around back then, would be shooting bad guys that have robbed the local saloon or something. oh wait, that’s 200 years ago? screw it, He’d still be doing that.

  43. Reg says:

@Gato: Oh yeah, Calvin and Hobbes! Now I want to go play so Clavinball…
I was always obessed with cardboard boxes when I was a kid. My brother and I would use up so much duct tape and make tons of stuff. At BJ’s we’d always run for the ‘free boxes’ bin and pick one out.

  44. Zach Light says:

*thinks of spongebob and his imagination rainbow*

  45. Singularity says:

If the gas mileage is a ratio of the gas used to drive a number of miles, thennnnnnn asldkjw oh god alsdjwljd you divided by zero awawdawasdwf

  46. Calvin says:

    Infinity MPG. Here’s how:
It doesn’t use gas. In fact, it can’t.
It has moved, likely from biff pushing it.
    So…
0.1 miles per 0 gallons. 0 goes into 1 infinity times. Infinity times 0.1 is still infinity.

Fun fact: although 0 times infinity is 0, negative infinity times 0 is negative 1.

  47. Michael-Forest says:

Evidence suggests that boys several hundred years ago were really into swords.

  48. steve says:

I always hated the little car playsets. You HAD to buy hotwheels cars with hotwheels playsets. Couldn’t use matchbox with hot wheel NOOOOO, you HAD to have hotwheels. I think I always checked under the car to see if I could play with this car on this playset… it’s like some evil conspiracy.

  49. Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos says:

Manholes. I used to love them as a little kid. I guess I thought they were mysterious. I knew all manholes in the neighborhood and could tell if it’s sewage or utility water pipes by the sound they made.
